This book is based on a 2001 - 2002 travelling exhibition of still life paintings by French impressionist painters. It's an interesting topic since the Impressionists are much better known for their landscapes than for still life. But the book is small and doesn't cover nearly all the paintings in the exhibition. There is some discussion of the actual home life of some of the painters which I haven't seen anywhere else.If you are interested in this subject, don't waste your money on this book; instead buy Impressionist Still Life, by Eliza Rathbone, which is from the same exhibition. Rathbone's bone contains large beautiful full-color pictures of 80 or so paintings, accompanied by extensive discussions and comparisons of the paintings to each other and to the rest of the artists' work.I purchased both books and , in retrospect, wish I'd only bought Rathbone's book. They cost me roughly the same amount of money but the Rathbone book is so much better.

Surely not a comprehensive study of impressionist paintings, but a charming little book nonetheless - of nice quality printing and delightful illustrations. This is my second and was purchased as a gift.

Far from definitive, but still lovely and worth the $$$.

This book is one of my favorites, its short, but full of photos of the French Impressionists still life paintings.Just enough information about each painting and artist, a joy to read.

I picked this book up for my brother who's a professional artist and had requested it. The book is full of high quality images, and just right descriptions of the paintings and the painters who created them. He likes the book quite a lot-and I've seen it pulled out in his studio a number of times.

Nicely illustrated. Enjoyed it very much.

Editor Davis introduces the volume with a vivid memoir of her own experiences in France and follows up each of the main selections with a two-page introduction to the writer. The contributors range from Lois Lowry and Elizabeth Partridge to Graham Salisbury and Jean Fritz. The ages of the travelers and the adventures they describe vary greatly: Henry Mazer's experiences as an 18-year-old gunner shot down over Czechoslovakia during World War II; Lowry's encounters as an 11-year-old communicating with Japanese neighbors without a common language. Probably the most memorable entry is Piper Dellums' story of a bigoted South African exchange student who is stunned and distressed to realize that her host family in Washington, D.C., is African American. Though not every piece is excellent, the overall quality is uncommonly high. The best contributions are riveting, and the voices, vivid and distinctive. Dr Bernstein has written excellent books. He backs up what he says with clear statistics presented in a logical manner. I'm convinced this is the best way to build your portfolio. Proper asset allocation for one's own risk tolerance is vital. The principles outlined in this book have helped my portfolio exceed my expectations.

The Intelligent Asset Allocator sits right next to 'Stocks for the Long Run' and 'The Intelligent Investor' on my bookshelf; it's a classic.I enjoy thinking about asset allocation and how to best structure a portfolio. No matter what studies you may trust the most, asset allocation is clearly a major driver of portfolio returns. This book invites you to deconstruct your assumptions and build them back up again. I would have liked a book ten times as long, but then I really enjoy seeing all the intricacies. Even so, there is a lot hinted at in these pages that gives you further directions to explore. Even if you are familiar with diversification, various asset classes, portfolio theory and the reasons for indexing, there is a lot of value here. I will admit the book is growing somewhat dated with respect to the time frame it discusses, but the book loses nothing in relevance.I am still building assets, and because this book referenced both standard and aggressive growth portfolios (I employ a portfolio very similar to the 'Madonna' Portfolio he mentions, with a couple key differences), I knew I was on the same trail as the author, which was incredibly gratifying for me. For those with different backgrounds, the insights you find relevant may differ.I will say the book would benefit from a greater discussion of various portfolios. How important is it to mimic the market (or rather, what is the risk associated with failing to look like the market, which is true to some degree of every portfolio?) What is the role of TIPS in a portfolio (or rather, when does Inflation become a central risk? I maintain that you only need them in retirement, but am eager to hear different opinions.) How much risk should you take with the credit portion of your portfolio (I use intermediate term treasuries myself - covariance vs equities is just too superior not to, even with the risk of rising rates. Again, I like to hear other opinions.)With reference to portfolios I've read about: the 'Gone Fishing Portfolio' was also amazingly comprehensive, if not as focussed on portfolio building as the IAA, and the portfolio it proposes is pretty solid. Swenson's books are very good, and his suggested portfolio is top notch, if history is any judge. Swedroe suggests a pretty bullet-proof portfolio, so even though returns won't blow you out of the water, they should be solid, and the ride should be serene (which can be very important in a retirement portfolio, as lack of volatility both increases SAFEMAX and decreases the odds of running out of money early... i.e. the trade-off for lower returns can yield a higher cash flow.) All of these authors are worth the read.

Bernstein has done a nice job in debunking the most important myth of the investment field - namely, that it is possible to beat the market on a sustained basis. It is an unfortunate reality that the investment management industry - stockbrokers, mutual funds, and many investment advisors - are still able to sell their products despite the long term research that Bernstein cites, showing plainly that no one beats the market consistently in the long haul. Earlier in my investment "career" I tried several of these "experts" and was frustrated that they made more money on the investments than I did.What Bernstein does do well is to collect the results of much academic research with his own analysis, and clearly show thefacts about investment performance. The principle findings are that each type of financial instrument - large cap stock, small cap stock, bond, etc., have characteristic historical performance; and that the most important decision investors face is their allocation of their investments across these classes. He gives simple but powerful suggestions.Bernstein's goal is to make this information available to all, whether or not the reader understands financial math and statistics. I believe that he does a good job at this, separating the mathematical and statistical details for those who want to see them.I would strongly recommend this to any investors who are still purchasing individual stocks or actively managed mutual funds.

I bought 'The Intelligent Asset Allocator' right after loosing my shirt in the dot com bust about nine years ago. I came to the realization that there had to be a better method to sound long-term investing than chasing highly volatile internet stocks. For most part, I have followed a broad asset allocation investment strategy with re-allocation annually. The big lesson: I also learned to enjoy life, volunteer, be thankful, encourage others, and nurture great friendships.What I liked about this book are the explanations about risk and reward in a straight-forward understandable math context. Risk is defined as the standard deviation of the annual returns for a particular asset (e.g, stock, fund, bond). Dr. Bernstein uses a set of interesting coin toss investment examples throughout several of the chapters to illustrate this risk/reward strategy. Nice approach to introducing the topic for each chapter. By Chapter 3, simple risk/reward plots are shown based on different ownership percentages of two assets. The book does a great job explaining the rationale for selecting portfolio percentages for various asset classes.Actually, Dr. Bernstein has published a collection of books on asset allocation, each with a different level of technical content. The Intelligent Asset Allocator The Four Pillars of Investing The Investor's ManifestoI found the following quote on his website appealing: "When I wrote The Intelligent Asset Allocator, I thought I was producing a volume for the average investor. Turns out I was wrong: the book's audience was closer to the average electrical engineer. So I tried a little harder and produced The Four Pillars of Investing. Close, but no cigar: still lots of complaints about all the math and graphs."Regardless of which book you acquire, asset allocation and portfolio theory is worth understanding for any investor.

Using a kindle, I was unable to access any of the numerous charts. Without them the rest is confusing and, IMHO, ueless

I liked this book very much, the pics are fantastic, tons of color photos of boxes and prizes. The only reason it's not perfect in my eyes is the writer's habit of trying to be funny in EVERY paragraph. Almost every other sentence has a joke, pun, metaphor or wisecrack which got old very quickly. Plus the author actually sticks political jokes and slams in here and there which is really unnecessary in a book about CEREAL BOXES! I couldn't care less about someone's opinion one leaning or another when I am trying to read about how to preserve old collectibles. Buy it for the pics, not the information, as you'll have to surf through cheesy jokes the whole time, perhaps he did this to pad it out and make it look like there was more info than there really was.

This 216 page softbound volume features over 500 very large, very sharp, full color photos that you'll love. The book provides a good background for this collectible. It covers boxes, premiums, mail-in offers and more. Everything is arranged by year. I especially liked all of the offers that the cereal companies provided in the 50's. Brought back many memories. I wish I still had some of the goodies shown that I had at that time. A real memory jogger. A true bonanza worth adding to your collection.

What a wonderful book! Worth twice the price. Filled with color photos of some great cereal box pictorials. Looking through the book was like taking a happy walk through a phase of my childhood. I think some of the pictures on the boxes were far more interesting than the actual items they offered inside or through the mail. You will not regret purchasing this book for fun or reference. I have to give it five stars.
