I initially bought this book because I thought he would teach how to make connections. But that is not what this book is about. It is simply about life practices the author believes in and some stories from his life and some mentors. I like how he emphasizes the importance of being passionate about your work and how he shows that it is possible to make a living doing something you enjoy if you simplify and focus. But the author is still very young and while he has some life experiences, his training and experiences haven't made him a true expert in this field. So I would consider this book more of a one-time read, rather than a true tool kit to refer back to again and again.
I have read both of Jesse's books, The Connection Algorithm and Hustle. Both have given me clarity and simplified many of the foggy areas of my life. One of the main reasons I love his writing is because of this simplification. Here a 3 of my biggest takeaways:1.) Take action, keep taking action, never stop taking action. Sure you can be prepared before you decide to do something but never forget that the most important part is actually doing it!2.) Basically there are no rules to life. After reading the books I realized there is no governing body on my self-interest other than my own thoughts! This is very liberating. So now when self-doubt strikes I feel courageous enough to persevere. Life is too short for me to sweat the comfort zone. If you are taking risks towards something you are passionate about you can't fail.3.) I am in ZombieLand. As a matter of fact I realized that all I do all day in ZombieLand is call other people who are also in ZombieLand. I am a ZombieLand telemarketer (ugh). I think that realizing this is paramount. Jesse does a great job of not only helping us to recognize it, but defines it and names it (makes it tangible). When something is tangible it is changeable.Jesse uses many different analogies that make everything simple. I was/am an offender of over complicating everything. I also find it very refreshing how willing he is to give back to those that helped him along the way. Even people that didn't realize they were helping him. This is the sort of unique and authentic person I strive to be like.Some of the negative reviews of this book that I have read say, and I am paraphrasing, that none of the material is new, and can be gleaned from different sources. It is not revolutionary so to speak. My response to this would be simply, does it need to be? He is not re-inventing the wheel, he is showing you the wheel works on its own. It doesn't need to be connected to a car or bike. It will roll in whatever direction it is pushed, so PUSH IT!I think Jesse does tell an authentic version of life purpose. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in bettering themselves.
Have read over 60 books in the last 2 years (about 30 in the area of career/personal development ) and this book is definitely the BEST book I've read out of all of them!! The eight page introduction does a very good job in letting the reader know what it is and what it is not. It’s about taking action, not letting fear take over, not being overly concerned about what people might think of what you are doing, doing things you enjoy, taking care of your body, life hacks, passion, career, connecting with people that can help you with your cause and repaying people back that help you and much more. From somewhat of a short book (4.5 hour audio) there is a lot of very useful information and way too much to try to explain in a book review.Even though I've gone on to other books this book is now the one that I go back to every once in a while and listen to for 20 min or so until the next time I want to hear it again. Every once in a while when I want to get a good dose of reality I listen to that last part of the book which is actually the blog that resulted in writing the book. I might even suggest reading/listening to that part first. This is one of those books and which you really miss reading it once you've completed it, it's kind a like a movie that you watched and then the movie is over you wish it was not over. It's amazing how the English word can work, a certain word, a certain phrase, a certain voice inflection or voice tone can really make a significant impact. Jesse the author even has a Facebook page for like minded peopleThe narrator of the book is a guy named Michael Pauley and this guy does a great job, so good I spent the effort to track him down to tell him what a great job he did. Michael is a great narrator, speaker and actor but there's no way he could've narrated the book without being fully committed to the real message of the book.Great job Jesse and Michael! Keep doing what you guys are doing to help people!
Jesse Tevelow does a great job in The Connection Algorithm explaining how important it is for each of us to expand our networks. Establishing a solid network will allow our personal growth to expand exponentially because we will be able to leverage the experience and contacts of the people in our network. One of the best ways to expand your network is to establish connections with people that he calls Connectors - "thought leaders, experts and influence in a given discipline or range of disciplines."My biggest take away is the equation that Tevelow uses to capture the essence of his book:f(pg) = (ri)(x) + (re)(y)Where:pg = Personal Growthri = Risksx = A numeric variablere = Relationshipsy = A numeric variableBasically, personal growth is a function of the risks you are willing to take and the relationships that you are able to cultivate along the way.I highly recommend this book for anyone but I especially found it useful for my son who is just starting up his first real business after his second year of college.Connections are critical to your success so cultivate yours strategically![...]
