I have read many books about how to write memoir, or how to write about yourself. The answer is given in this highly readable book.Read this book, and if what you have in mind is to write about your life, the answer is simple, Write about what you know about your life. Don't write any old thing or about it all from the time you were born until the time you think you have figured out how it will all probably end. Write instead about those ever memorable events in your lifetime to date that taught you a valuable lesson or made you more humble for the experience you had occasion to share. Your life is not a totality of "this happened and then this happened, forevermore." It's the best stories, shared or experienced, that you recall and tell with splendor and modesty. Better yet, read the book, and you will learn what I mean.

Zinsser seems to be a special man--tender and warm, with a voice of authenticity and kindness. He desires to impart a message, or few, that will serve to help a writer in her craft. I found this to be true here and there throughout the book, and in those moments, I underlined the phrases, such as:"Write about things that are important to you, not about what you think readers will want to read, or editors will want to publish or agents will want to sell." - or -"If you put your writing in the form of a quest you will make a connection with your readers that will surprise you with its power." - and -"All writing is talking to someone else on paper. Talk like yourself."I enjoyed those poignant statements. They brought me clarity in an instant. The parts of the book that left more to be desired were when Zinsser actually began sharing various life stories (his memoir voice). They felt dry to me, boring, and not the result of poor writing, or writing style, but rather my own lack of interest in the subject matter. I appreciate having read the book; however, it isn't one that I feel compelled to recommend.Happy Reading!

William Zinsser’s charming “Writing about Your Life” is less a how-to book in writing creative autobiography than it is well-told stories of fascinating moments in the author’s life. Early on in the book, these remembrances serve as illustrations for Zinsser’s points about memoir writing. As the book continues, there is less instruction and more storytelling.Zinsser notes at the start of Chapter 3, “The problem is that an interesting life doesn’t make an interesting memoir. Only small pieces of a life make an interesting memoir. The rest is just getting through the day....” This book is chockablock with engaging and amusing “pieces of a life.” To be sure, Zinsser offers solid, useful advice on writing, e.g., that “ultimately it’s people--memorable people--who make certain places stick in our minds forever. Look for those people, wherever you go, and tell us how their story intersected with your life” (p. 79). But it’s really the author’s anecdotes about meeting memorable people in fascinating places that captivated this reader. A writer would do well to absorb the advice, and mostly, just imitate the master.

What I thought would be an instruction manual on how to write memoirs turned out to be a moving memoir about the author’s life. Embedded in a series of short narratives, many of them excerpts from previously published articles, are William Zinsser’s comments that illustrate how and why his approach to writing one's story is positive and effective. I discovered through reading this book about writing about your life, that I was increasingly immersed in the author’s life experiences. One of my favorite quotes toward the end of the book is, “Most people are some kind of pilgrimage, whether or not they recognize it as such. If you put your writing in the form of a quest you will make a connection with your readers that will surprise you with its power.” I came away wishing I could have met Mr. Zinsser, who led such a rich life, or sat in any of his inspiring class lectures to hear his stories in person. Short of that, I will refer back to this book to revisit its many lessons.

I've been taking a writing class, with focus on memoir writing. At times I've been puzzled trying to understand where autobiography and memoir writing mesh, or don't mesh. Zinsser's book gives numerous examples of memoirs. Essentially, memoirs more often describe smaller life incidents and lessons learned. When a person's larger life experiences are described, they again focus on the individual's personal experience of the event and, again, lessons learned. I found Zinsser easy to read and appreciated his use of examples to make his points. Many of the stories come from prior books he has written, so those who have read prior works may experience deja vu.

William Zinsser died recently. He leaves a great legacy. He and my now ex-husband taught me to write, which is how I make my living. I recommend Mr. Zinsser's book, On Writing Well, to everyone. I am coaching an aspiring memoirist now and added this book, Writing About Your Life, to her list of recommended reading in addition to On Writing Well. I think it's wonderful. I wish I wrote as well as he did.

This book was helpful for me when I planned to write my own book. As I began to work on my second book I decided to purchase this (I'd read a library copy previously). I have a small collection of books about writing that I own. All of them were first borrowed from the library and purchased later because of their value and contribution to my understanding and appreciation of the craft. This particular book reads so easily and enjoyably that sometimes it needs to be reread to revisit the point of his example or assessment. This isn't a failing of the book, it's simply not as dry as other instructional texts.

i read this very interesting and well researched book on my e-reader. Problem is that one cannot easily go back and look things up, such as the pictures and map. The book is well written and entertainingly written. I have bought the DVD which I will watch and hopefully then I will have a clearer 'picture' of what Alexander achieved. One thing for sure, he was always my hero, but after reading his 'war crimes' I am less 'star-struck'.Strategically he was outstanding, but as a human being he had many, many flaws, which have had a great impact on many. His temper got so often in the way of reason which too much destruction as a result. But as for Michael Wood and his book: Super!!!

I have been fascinated by Alexander since first hearing about him in high school, yet never did read a complete book about him. I tore through this one in two days! The author's words convey incredibly solid, delightful images...so detailed and romantically beautiful, I could almost walk into them. The writing brings Alexander to life.A highly recommended read, full of adventure and mountains of historical information. I can't wait to watch the companion video.

I founfd this to be a very interesting read. The Alexander history was a bit lighter than other biograpies I've read on the subject (not neecessarily a bad thing). The emphasis on place and geography and how it relates to the modern world was fascinating. I'd like to watch the video series.

Michael Wood created a very readable and informative book. I especially appreciated the many maps. I enjoyed the book so much I'm now going to try to find the DVD of the PBS series to watch!

This is part travelog and part historical (although you could comment on some of the sources used). As such it does provide a bit of the best of both Worlds.

You will visualize part of the greatest story ever told!Conrats Michael on the Great work not just talking about the book but your incredible journey.

I enjoy reading history especially people in the Bible. He was not a nice person, but the history was interesting. I'm Still reading the book

A friend of mine recently asked me for the name of a good introductory book on the life and career of Alexander the Great (356-323 BC), King of Macedon and world conqueror. Without hesitation, I recommended Michael Wood’s In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great, the companion book to his magnificent 1997 PBS series retracing Alexander’s epic march of domination across the known world. Wood is one of the best “popular” historians today, who writes in a highly evocative and even poetic style. The following passage from the book’s Prologue, describing a scene from Wood’s travels in modern-day Pakistan, provides a “taste” of the latter: “Up the dim street we heard the distant sound of drumming and chanting. Above us, against a full-moon sky, the dark shape of the open-air temple stood over the village; dying flames licked the sacred stone, and in the shadows were the carved wooden effigies they used in their religion.”In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great, however, is not simply a tantalizing travelogue of faraway and exotic lands. Michael Wood is a serious historian, who fully analyzes the motives and outcomes surrounding the key events in Alexander the Great’s extraordinary ten-year and 22,000-mile campaign of world conquest. His analysis of Alexander’s cryptic and dangerous side trip to the desert oasis at Siwa in Egypt, for example, explores historical considerations rarely touched upon by many modern scholars. Certainly, the young king sought some supernatural confirmation from the oracle at Siwa of his alleged “divine” parentage, as most of our ancient sources relate. Wood points out that more mundane and pragmatic considerations may well have been at the heart of this perilous journey. Following his overthrow of the hated Persian overlords, Alexander may have sought legitimacy for his right to rule Egypt from the influential temple priesthood at Siwa. In this effort, at least, he was clearly successful: Egypt became one of the more peaceable (and profitable) additions to Alexander's far-flung and often tumultuous empire.Alexander the Great’s conquests, Wood rightly notes, “was by common consent one of the greatest events in the history of the world, opening up West and East for the first time.” Thus, Greek culture spread rapidly across the Middle East, sustained by the young Macedonian king’s many colonial settlements in the region. (Kandahar, the site of a strategic American military base in southern Afghanistan, was originally founded by Alexander some 2,300 years ago!) The inevitable blending of Greek and native cultures that followed over the centuries helped to forge the remarkable Hellenistic Age (323-31 BC), the complex historical matrix from which Christianity would later sprout and bloom. Ancient Rome, too, would draw heavily from the wellspring of the Hellenistic era’s magnificent cultural heritage.Much recent historiography, however, jaundiced by the totalitarian rule of the twentieth century’s many dictators and warlords, has harshly judged Alexander the Great’s character and legacy. This is in marked contrast to the writings of some earlier twentieth-century historians. The latter often viewed Alexander as an enlightened ruler bearing the many gifts of Greek culture to the “barbarian” peoples of the benighted East -- the ancient equivalent of Kipling’s “The White Man’s Burden.” Michael Wood firmly rejects such “romantic” notions concerning Macedonian imperialism and colonialism. By the time he reached northern India (326 BC), Wood remarks, Alexander’s “crusade” against the Persian Empire had degenerated into a “war against the people of Asia.” After crushing a brutal and bloody two-year guerrilla war by the tribes of Bactria (northern Afghanistan), the Macedonian conqueror was in no mood to brook opposition from “petty” maharajas. “Terror was now the tactic” Alexander employed to force the subjugation of India, Wood writes. All along the great Indus River, city after city was sacked by the rampaging armies of Macedon, their populations slaughtered or enslaved. At the time of his death (by poison or natural causes) in Babylon at the age of 33, Alexander the Great had carved out the largest empire of the ancient world – one broader in width than the continental United States. As Michael Wood discovered during his own remarkable trek across this vast expanse of territory, the memory of Alexander’s conquests still persists in the “great harvest of amazing stories, songs, poems, myths and legends” circulating throughout the region. Indeed, readers of the Bible are also familiar with the great Macedonian world conquer: Alexander “appears in the apocalyptic visions of the biblical Book of Daniel as The Third Beast who unleashes a bloody tide on humankind.” In the West, however, Alexander is often epitomized as a great hero and military strategist; certainly, Julius Caesar and Napoleon were under the spell of his vast achievements as they attempted to forge their own historical and military legacies.I conclude this review with a final reflection by Michael Wood, as he muses over the meaning of his own monumental trek “in the footsteps” of Alexander the Great. “I could not help but think how history repeats itself: Alexander’s deeds, for example, a model for the West. Empires, even when their rulers have gone, leave chains; their thought-worlds persist, their images too powerful and seductive to be rubbed out.” (One thinks here of modern Pakistanis and Indians playing cricket, a sport beloved by their former British colonial rulers!) In this respect, as an old legend related by Wood proclaims: “Great Alexander still lives. And rules!”

Lenin: The Man, the Dictator, and the Master of Terror, by Victor Sebestyen

Review

“Sebestyen has managed to produce a first-rate thriller by detailing the cynicism and murderous ambition of the founder of the Soviet Union.” –The New York Times Book Review, “100 Notable Books of 2017”   “An accessible, fair, and marvelously written biography…For anyone interested in an introduction to the world’s greatest revolutionary that draws on the latest research, Mr. Sebestyen’s Lenin would be the place to start.” –Douglas Smith, The Wall Street Journal“Can first-rate history read like a thriller? With Lenin: The Man, the Dictator and the Master of Terror, the journalist Victor Sebestyen has pulled off this rarest of feats . . . How did he do it? Start with a Russian version of “House of Cards” and behold Vladimir Ilyich Lenin pre-empt Frank Underwood’s cynicism and murderous ambition by 100 years. Add meticulous research by digging into Soviet archives, including those locked away until recently. Plow through 9.5 million words of Lenin’s “Collected Works.” Finally, apply a scriptwriter’s knack for drama and suspense that needs no ludicrous cliffhangers to enthrall history buffs and professionals alike.”—Josef Joffe, The New York Times Book Review"Intriguing"—Karl Ove Knausgaard, The New York Times"The absence of a post-Soviet Lenin biography has finally been corrected, with this brilliant and compelling portrait of the Soviet state’s founder…Sebestyen covers Lenin as a private person as well as a thinker and revolutionary… [this] superb biography is a commentary on how, with even the best of intentions, adoption of a revolutionary ideology can lead to a living hell.”–Ronald Radosh, The National Review“Lenin is the best biography I’ve read in years. It takes Victor Sebestyen less than five pages to perform the hardest of all literary tricks: making the person he’s writing about seem like a familiar human being.”–Bob Blaisdell, The Christian Science Monitor “An illuminating new biography of the cold, calculating ruler on whom the subsequent Soviet state modeled itself . . . Sebestyen ably captures the man, "the kind of demagogue familiar to us in Western democracies." A compelling, clear-eyed portrait of a dictator whose politics have unfortunate relevance for today.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)“Insightful . . . A compelling portrait of an epoch-making figure . . . Readers explore the complexities of [Lenin’s] personality: sophisticated intellectual and shameless demagogue, cerebral logician and emotional rageaholic, sensitive lover of music and callous murderer. But no complexities will fascinate readers more than those characterizing Lenin’s tangled relationships with the women who influenced him. Taking readers deep into a marriage that previous biographers have dismissed as merely functional, Sebestyen illuminates moments of real tenderness—and of painful tension—as Lenin succumbs to the charms of a beautiful émigré, whom he makes his mistress without abandoning his wife.”—Booklist (starred review)"[An] excellent, original and compelling portrait of Lenin as man and leader."—Simon Sebag Montefiore, author of The Romanovs“A fresh, powerful portrait of Lenin, and just at the right time: As Bolshevik ideas and tactics return to world politics, Victor Sebestyen focuses our attention on man who invented them.”—Anne Applebaum, author of Red Famine: Stalin's War on Ukraine      "A vivid and rounded picture of Lenin the man. Serious and deeply reserved, the great revolutionary had few friends but loved at least two women deeply, and at the same time. Lenin's life has been told before, but Sebestyen brings to the task a gift for narrative and for describing his rich cast of characters."—Margaret MacMillan, The Oldie (UK)"An entertaining read . . . Sebestyen writes in a lively journalistic style and has an eye for memorable anecdotes and quotations . . . He brings Lenin the man to life and shows persuasively how 'he was driven by emotion as much as by ideology.'"—Orlando Figes, The Sunday Times (UK)  “Richly readable . . . Sebestyen does full justice to the astonishing, thriller-like tale of [Lenin’s] return to Russia to organize the October uprising . . . Lenin saw enemies everywhere. Blaming peasant farmers for the shortage of food, he ordered provincial officials to round them up and hang them. Even Josef Stalin was rebuked for not being ‘merciless’ enough . . . An enthralling but appalling story.”—The Mail on Sunday (UK)"Sebestyen brings Lenin's complexities to life, balancing personality with politics in succinct and readable prose, [and] describes particularly keenly how this ruthless, domineering, often vicious man depended on women to sustain him. "—David Reynolds, The New Statesman (UK)“Sebestyen, whose family fled Hungary as refugees when he was a child, revives a style of history familiar to the Cold War, in which leading Bolsheviks appear as black sheep in an unhappy eastern bloc family history. Like the Polish-born historian Richard Pipes, his writing is full of caustic asides and asterisks and daggers leading down wormholes of communist lore. His well-sourced narrative feels as if it was honed around kitchen tables for decades before he sat down to write it.”—Roland Elliott Brown, The Spectator (UK)

If Lenin had not been on the scene, would there have been a Bolshevik/Communist Revolution in Russia? Likely not. If Lenin had not been the "master of terror" that he was, would there have been the purges and famines of Stalin with their tens of millions of victims? Likely not. One can make a respectable argument that Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, a/k/a Lenin, influenced the history of the twentieth century more than any other person, with the possible exception of Hitler. That was my reasoning in wanting to read Victor Sebestyen's biography, LENIN: THE MAN, THE DICTATOR, AND THE MASTER OF TERROR. After reading the book, I am even more persuaded by that reasoning. LENIN is a quite readable and historically responsible biography of the man. It is much more in the vein of a popular biography than an academic one. True, there are end-notes, but only nineteen pages of them. There also are footnotes on about every third page of text, but those should not be skipped as most contain interesting nuggets of information.Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov (b. 1870, d. 1924) was born into an affluent middle-class family. The spark for the radicalization of Vladimir occurred when he was seventeen and his older brother was executed for his involvement in a plot to assassinate the Tsar. Once radicalized, Vladimir (who adopted the name "Lenin" in 1901) pursued a dictatorship of the proletariat with incredible single-mindedness. Even so, in his personal life, Lenin was a charming, relatively conservative, principled, bourgeois gentleman. In his political life, however, he was thoroughly unscrupulous. Here is one of Sebestyen's summary characterizations of Lenin: "In many ways he was a thoroughly modern political phenomenon -- the kind of demagogue familiar to us in Western democracies, as well as in dictatorships. In his quest for power, he promised people anything and everything. He offered simple solutions to complex problems. He lied unashamedly. * * * He justified himself on the basis that winning meant everything: the ends justified the means. * * * Lenin was the godfather of what commentators a century after his time call 'post-truth politics'. * * * He built a system based on the idea that political terror against opponents was justified for a greater end. It was perfected by Stalin, but the ideas were Lenin's."In addition to being an excellent biography of its subject, the book also provides a good 30,000-feet historical overview of the Russian Revolution and the ensuing Russian Civil War. And along the way, Sebestyen sprinkles dozens of fascinating anecdotes and trivia. Here is a sampling:* Vladimir Putin's grandfather, Spiridon, was the cook for Lenin at Gorki, the country estate where Lenin stayed when he wasn't in the Kremlin and where he died.* Lenin's maternal grandfather was a Jew, and his paternal grandmother was a Kalmyk (a Mongolian people). The Soviets airbrushed out those two aspects of Lenin's "non-Russian" heritage.* "The Sealed Train" refers to the arrangement by which, in March/April 1917, Germany whisked Lenin and fifty-nine other Bolsheviks from Switzerland to Russia (via Sweden and Finland) in order to further destabilize Russia and, Germany hoped, remove it from World War I. In Volume Two of "The World Crisis", Winston Churchill characterized the incident thusly: "The Germans turned upon Russia the most grisly of all weapons. They transported Lenin in a sealed train like a plague bacillus from Switzerland into Russia."* "There is no doubt that Lenin gave the order" that the imprisoned Tsar Nicholas II, his family (wife, fourteen-year-old son, and four daughters), and household (family physician, maid, cook, and valet) be butchered in July 1918.* Molotov, who served under both Lenin and Stalin (becoming for a time the second-most powerful man in the Soviet Union under the latter), said that both leaders "were hard men . . . harsh and stern. But without a doubt Lenin was harsher."

"History will never forgive us if we do not take power now," spoke one Vladimir Iliych Ulyanov in September of 1917. If 'Lenin: The Man, the Dictator, and the Master of Terror', Victor Sebestyen's new book on the Russian dictator, is an indication, we can safely assume history would have been very happy to forgive. Not that Sebestyen's book deals primarily with the Communist Revolution in Russia. The vast part of it is actually devoted to Lenin's upbringing, his politicking with fellow revolutionaries during exile, his dealings with the Tsar's secret police while abroad, and also his peculiar triangular relationship with his wife and life-long mistress. Not until the final quarter of the book do we read about Lenin's return to the mother country in order to foment a revolution there that would shake the foundations of world history. The image that emerges throughout the pages is a somewhat familiar one: As so many revolutionary powerhouses in history, most notably Karl Marx himself, Lenin was born into an upper middle class family. His father, who raised his kids in the Orthodox tradition, "was a thoroughly decent man of liberal views, who believed in gradual reform and evolutionary change through education." His son, though, while an excellent student in grade school, never made it through university. Already scarred by the traumas of his father's untimely death and his brother's execution for attempting to assassinate the Tsar, Lenin was booted out of Kazan University for participating in a student protest and sent into exile in Kokushkino, where he proceeded to "educate" himself. His brother's death, in particular, was a heavy and consequential blow: "A young boy who rarely thought about politics became radicalised almost overnight," Sebestyen writes. At this point we get a first glimpse of what is to come. Lenin would read revolutionary writings from early morning until late at night, as he would work obsessively, indeed fanatically, later in life towards his single goal of revolution in Russia. "Increasingly over the years," Sebestyen explains, "he would suffer from nervous exhaustion, raging headaches, insomnia and attacks of intemperate anger – the 'rages', as his wife called them." These were the result of too much time spent filling low-circulation Communist newspapers, too little sleep, and probably too little social contact (Lenin was never much of a socialite anyway). Living, essentially, on his mother's dole for the better part of his years – if he ever held a real job, we don't learn about it in the book presently under review – Lenin was able to spend all of his time and energy on fomenting revolution. In fact, he had the focus and obsession of a professional triathlete. This picture of a fanatic working tirelessly day and night and becoming ever more radical in the process continues throughout his time in exile and after his return to Russia in 1917. In the interest of revolution, Lenin could be blatantly pragmatic, especially on ideological issues. It was, after all, Lenin who threw overboard Marx's theory that revolution would come at the hands of the workers in capitalist society and was an historical inevitability; Lenin's own Russia would have to skip the capitalism, of which it had little at the turn of the century, and move straight to the revolution, forced onto the nation by Lenin himself, of course. In his dealings with others, though, Lenin was less pragmatic. He was almost always the most radical, the least willing to compromise, and the most willing to resort to violent solutions. Ad hominem and sheer rhetorical force were his primary tools in political debate. And he personally forced the schism of the Communist Party into a Menshevik and Bolshevik faction, which led to a bloody civil war once the latter had seized power. For all his inner radicalism, Lenin never found satisfaction in killing or hearing the gory details on the torture of some enemy or other. And, unlike so many tyrants before and after him, he "wasn't interested in the trappings of power and didn’t enjoy them." While many of his fellow revolutionaries were able to rake in the big bucks after 1917, Lenin resided in a modest Kremlin apartment right up to his death.Yet the single most important subject of his studies, according to Sebestyen, was "the nature of power, how it is grasped and used, how it changes those who possess it and those who don’t." Once in possession of it himself, he became ever more ruthless in his efforts to hold it and kickstarted the "Red Terror" to eliminate his many enemies (real or perceived). "Hang (and I mean hang, so the people can see) not less than 100 known kulaks, rich men, bloodsuckers," read part of his infamous August 1918 cable to fellow Communists. The Tsarist family, too, died a grisly midnight death in a dark basement at the hands of a group of Bolshevik thugs, who were almost certainly directed by Lenin. In true Platonian fashion, Sebestyen remarks: "Throughout its existence the Soviet Union identified itself with the founder of the State, alive or dead. The regime he created was largely shaped by his personality: secretive, suspicious, intolerant, ascetic, intemperate." Needless to say, it is the final part of the book that makes for the most blood-curdling reading. The biographical account is brilliantly intertwined with its historical backdrop, so expect to read about the Tsars, about the factional infighting within the Communist Party, and of course a vivid account of the Revolution itself. The refreshing element in this book, in an age of gratuitous adoration of socialist tyrants, is that Sebestyen pulls no punches in his moral judgement of Lenin. He stays miles away from the pseudo-history, originated on the Left, that portrays Stalin as the bad cop and his predecessor as the good one. The author lays bare the evil instincts and fanatical character traits lurking within his subject for everybody to see.Sebestyen deviates from this line just once, in a peculiar chapter about the underlying currents in Russia feeding the revolutionaries. The train of thought goes more or less like this: After the assassination of Tsar Alexander II in 1881, his politically inept son Alexander III as well as the next successor Nicholas II tightened the reigns and became ever more oppressive in their dealings with the opposition. In doing this, "They guaranteed the growth of a violent opposition, which they were too weak and incompetent to destroy," writes Sebestyen. "Much moderate opinion did not blame the 'terrorists', but the government" when "20,000 ministers, provincial governors, senior civil servants and top army officers were assassinated by revolutionary groups in the last twenty-five years of Tsarist rule."This is a somewhat odd line of argument. It wasn't just "provincial governors, senior civil servants and top army officers" who were assassinated by revolutionaries, but Alexander II himself too, who by Sebestyen's own account was a relatively modern leader: He "emancipated the serfs in 1861," "launched a series of other modest measures to modernise the Romanov autocracy," "initiated a series of reforms, and "oversaw the expansion of Russia’s schools."Perhaps Alexander's successors share some of the blame for the societal catastrophe that was to follow in the twentieth century, but surely the revolutionaries were the murderers who started it all. They fell for the siren song of a radical ideology which was not only wholly alien to their nation's history, but cherished a blatant disregard for human nature. Moreover, the French Revolution and its horrendous bloodshed were still within living memory in 1881, yet Lenin himself, writes Sebestyen, "often saw the Jacobins as an inspiration for the Bolsheviks." Whether he and his radical friends were ignorant and kumbaya about the nature of their future state is certainly up for debate. In any case, with the benefit of hindsight it's clear that Russia would have been far better off had Alexander died a peaceful death in his bed at old age. This is the only blemish on an otherwise superb book about a thoroughly fascinating subject. Victor Sebestyen has done history buffs such as myself a huge favor here. 'Lenin' is wonderfully written, engaging and informative. Though he seems to lean heavily on secondary literature, the book is obviously very well researched and packed with illustrative details. Even the notes at the end of each chapter are worth glossing over. This is history as it's meant to be. Highly recommended.

This doodle diary is really cute. There are so many different pages with different ideas on what to draw, write, doodle, etc. inside. I bought this for our 11 year old for Christmas and she's going to love it. I noticed the other day that she has a plain journal in her room, that only a few pages are written on. I think that this will really get her into journal writing! This is great for kids who like to document their lives and are really creative. For example, there are pages in this diary to:1. List, doodle, collage the foods and desserts they love2. A page where they can write down what movies they saw, add comments about them, add ticket stubs, etc.3. A watercolor page - where they only doodle with watercolor colored pencils4. A page of inspirations - to find and include colors, words, patterns, illustrations, labels, photos -- and to add what's so inspiring about them5. A page about your best friends -- you can add pictures or draw them, say what you like about them, etc..I like that this doodle diary is filled with ideas for kids, instead of giving them a blank diary. Not only is it fun and appealing inside and out, but they won't be "stuck" on what to say or write or draw. What a GREAT idea to encourage creativity and documenting their lives, so they can go back and look at it in the future!

Bought this as a birthday present and it looked so cool that my daughter really wanted one too. She got one for the very next holiday. It's great. Creative. And I was happy there weren't weird questions that I don't think we need to be asking children anyway. Clean fun.

My 7 year old is all about art and loves to draw. This journal is perfect for capturing all the ideas she has. Every page is so well designed and has great topics to help get her started and encourages her to use her imagination. The book seems well bound and doesn't feel like it'll fall apart or lose any pages. It'll be a great keepsake for her to look through when she gets older.

I bought this as a gift for a preteen girl. It is about 5 x 7 inches, smaller than I thought. However it was very pretty and I am sure that any young girl would enjoy receiving this. It looks fun and invites comments and sketches. It is a nice non-electronic gift to help young women reflect and be thoughtful. It is an attractive product and perfect for gift giving.

The creativity, and inspirational concepts in this Doodle Diary are amazing. I bought this as a gift for an 11 year old, and I now hear that she uses it daily. I combined this Diary with a set of gel pens to add massive color and style to the already lively pages.

I bought this as a birthday present and needed to get one for my 7 year old daughter - she is into journaling at the moment. This is a fun way to change up her journals.

I bought this for my 8 year old cousin as a Christmas present and she absoultely loved it! I wanted to find her something that would be fun and silly but that would also allow her to express herself and put some thought into what's going on with friends and school and family. When I recieved it I was happy with the size, the prompts, and the space for her to draw and write. I was even more pleased to see her excitement when she opened it; she must have seen these before and wanted one because she dropped the box that it was wrapped in and jumped up and down, ran to her mom and said "Mom! Bay got me the diary you can draw in!" She received a lot of presents that day but she really seemed excited to fill this out.If you have a creative child in your life and your looking for a gift that will allow critical thinking and creative expression then this is it!

Stress comes into our lives everyday, so this is my little escape at the end of my day..I know it's a doodle book for girls, but I have gotten sooooo much stress relief, just doodling...I keep it at my bedside, with some colored pens, just doodle my way to calm. I have also ordered "Doodling for Paercrafters", funny when I was in school, I use to doodle all the time, I grow up, now I need ideas to doodle, what's wrong with that, are we to busy just to have fun and let our minds wander...i luv it..I feel like I'm back in school, when of course we were supose to be listening, but I think anyone who reads this review, will know, we all doodled somewhere, sometime, lets get back into having fun.

Review

“This new translation is a serious contribution to knowledge, enhancing and advancing scholarship on the Middle Ages. Rider’s introduction is learned and thoughtful, adroitly establishing the context of the De Multro. His scholarly apparatus to the translation is wonderful, always detailed and rewarding to read, never descending into numbing pedantry.”― Mark Gregory Pegg, Washington University (Mark Gregory Pegg)"This is truly a splendid work. Users of the old translation by James Bruce Ross (1959) will be delighted by Jeff Rider’s text and adopt it for teaching. Rider’s unique knowledge of the book’s genesis and the historical figures that feature in it offers fresh insights without taking anything away from the pleasure of discovery that will await all readers."―Walter Simons, Dartmouth College (Walter Simons)“The 1959 translation of Galbert of Bruges by James Bruce Ross set a high bar for replacement, but it was time for one and Jeff Rider is the scholar who understands this crucial 12th-century text most thoroughly and profoundly. His lucid and readable translation rests on a deep foundation of historical and literary scholarship―all of which is made available to the reader. Rider has ensured that this fascinating book will remain central to medieval scholarship and teaching.”―Nancy Partner, McGill University (Nancy Partner)“Jeff Rider’s new translation remains faithful to the journalistic organization and impulses of The Murder of Charles of Flanders, which enables him to bring out previously obscured elements of the text as well as the concerns that prompted Galbert to write his important chronicle in the first place. This is an outstanding piece of scholarship that all students of the Middle Ages will appreciate.”―Gabrielle M. Spiegel, Johns Hopkins University (Gabrielle M. Spiegel)“This new English translation . . . is a triumph of scholarship . . . Essential.”—Choice (R. F. Berkhofer III Choice)"...[T]he text is tremendously appealing for the immediacy of its voice and the clarity of its details; it demands our attention because it seems to speak in an idiom that we understand."—Scott G. Bruce, Speculum (Scott G Bruce Speculum 2015-07-01)

I started off the book expecting something as epic as Kings of the Wyld, hoping to be immediately drawn into the familiar, comforting world of the Heartwyld, bands of monster hunters, and more.Right off the bat, the character introduction of Tam and her idols, Fable, was excellent, and I fell in love with the story. I had a bit of a harder time a few chapters in, when it felt like the story got bogged down with re-introducing the familiar world (mercs fighting monsters in arenas and partying hard). However, by the time the story got past those repeats, it really settled into its own creation and began to delve into the characters of Fable in the same depth that Kings of the Wyld delved into Saga.Yet the story quickly set itself apart from the first. Instead of old heroes worn and weary from their past, this was a crew of young, often inexperienced warriors trying to forge their own legend. They each had a great deal of baggage to carry--something Mr. Eames excels at--but in a way, that was what made them so truly great.Kings of the Wyld was a hell of a story, but Bloody Rose ended up being an emotional journey that I never expected. When I finally closed the book, I had a sense of "Wow, that was spectacular" that the epic fight scenes of Book 1 just couldn't match. This story is all heart. Get past the slow-paced beginnings of the second act, and you're in for a truly one-of-a-kind experience.

Finally, FINALLY, the lights fade. A surge of excitement electrifies the arena as you become acutely aware of the hairs on the back of your neck. Months of waiting for this moment culminate into a blissful grin as the band finally takes the stage. You catch yourself screaming with the rest of the crowd as the opening riffs pulse through the speakers. It’s a feeling that defies description, shared only with those who are here in this moment with you. Complete strangers are forever bonded by this momentary feeling of transcendence. And although you might attend more concerts during the span of your lifetime, tonight is singular. It is unique. This combination of sounds and sights will never strike this exact chord in your soul again. So, you commit yourself fully to this moment, soaking in every detail, absorbing and filing away each new wave of emotion, to be examined and analyzed and cherished later. It is a rare thing to experience art that can raise you so high, that can bring you elation and honesty and joy, or that leaves a lasting impression carved into your psyche. I’ve been lucky enough to catch a handful of these experiences in my lifetime: Daft Punk at Coney Island, Radiohead at MSG Theater, and A Perfect Circle at the Theater of Living Arts. And now my list has grown by one after finishing Nicholas Eames’ brilliant Bloody Rose. There are so many aspects of this book that appealed to me. What stood out most was the exceptional balance that was struck between humor, action, character growth, and sheer creativity. Nearly every page crackles with something fresh and memorable: clever similes, interesting character origins, a rotating menagerie of monsters, conversations of enlightenment and camaraderie, or a sharp commentary comparing this world to our own. Every chapter connected me further with Tam, Roderick, and the rest of Fable. Emotional moments snuck up on me and hit me hard, though I usually found myself bursting with laughter on the very next page. These characters are flawed, haunted by their past, unsure of their future, yet care deeply about each other. The development of this kinship is one of the central and most compelling themes of the book, and it helped to elevate this story into rare territory.Like in his debut novel Kings of the Wyld, Eames pays clever homage to some of his favorite pop culture and musical references that may have inspired him throughout his life. I admired how these references never felt like they were shoehorned in for the sake of nostalgic appeal. Instead, their appearances felt natural, and added depth and dimension to the setting. I thought about which song lyrics or video game characters were chosen for this story, and these references often had backstories that intersected with the plot of Bloody Rose. These references, combined with the book’s brilliant sense of humor and genuine pathos of its characters’ plights, felt carefully cultivated and richly rewarding. Some characters only spend a paragraph in the spotlight, while others have exceptional arcs with tragic or glorious endings. Yet each character feels alive and familiar; if you don’t know these people, you know people just like them.Bloody Rose is many things. It is story of inclusion. It is a tale of loyalty, of finding your passion, of playing to your heart’s strengths. It speaks to the successes and pratfalls of persistence, and dances on the fine line that separates bravery and stupidity. But above all, it is a story of family: those who you are borne into, and those who you choose along the way. This is a beautiful, funny, exciting, hopeful, devastating, and wondrous book. It is something to savor, like the best pieces of art. Though with Eames only starting his publishing career, I have a feeling that the best has yet to come.9.5/10

I loved the first book and was really looking forward to this sequel. When I reached the 20% mark, I decided to put it back on the shelf and move on to something else. I was very disappointed.I've always heard that an author should show and not tell. But in the first 20% of the book the author decided to stop the action, skip to the aftermath and then tell us how the action ended, not once, but twice! Why would he do that? Finish the action so we can see it for ourselves!!I also couldn't tell if I was reading a YA novel or a more adult novel. At times Tam seemed overly naive and at others she seemed more worldly; it was very uneven to me. I also thought it was strange that the first time Tam saw the band in action, even though she is a self-confessed groupie, she was very surprised by some of the things her heroes could do. I would have thought, since she was such a fan, that she would know one of the band members could turn into a bear, for example, but the first time she saw it happen, she was shocked!Anyway, I was disappointed. I may come back to the book eventually but I have a lot of other books on my TBR pile to choose from.
