I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoyed watching Transparent. Her description of parenting was spot on and entertaining. But, sometimes I had some difficulty following. I was reading about a place and time but then she abruptly switched to a different place and time so I found myself a little confused. I am familiar with where she grew up and the community she grew up in so that was interesting to me. I would have liked to understood more of how her fathers gender change affected her own change because they seemed to be in tandem. I also wonder how much tv shows like Transparent have an actual effect on our culture. I see the young fathers now taking more responsibility for what had been traditionally mothers roles and actually planning the birthday parties themselves, etc. A powerful and welcome shift.

My partner read the book and I listed to the author read it on audible. Bother we’re great experience and the book was great.

As a fan of Transparent, I was excited to score an uncorrected proof of Jill Soloway’s (they, them, theirs) new book She Wants It: Desire, Power, and Toppling the Patriarchy from NetGalley. Soloway is also an alum of University of Wisconsin-Madison and queer, so I have always been curious about them. I was quickly hooked after the first few pages of reading about their childhood, their family, and their feminist awakening via a crush on a particular UW women’s studies professor who was a “k.d. lang-lookalike.” I couldn’t wait to hear Soloway’s words of wisdom about toppling the patriarchy.From the start, I found the book to be smart, sharp, and witty; Soloway would be someone to go have a drink with, to be sure. I laughed out loud a number of times.I enjoyed reading about Soloway’s kids, their career and the fight to get Transparent made, as well as the journeys Soloway and their parent went through regarding their gender identities. I also appreciated Soloway’s candor and bravery in sharing these stories as well as those concerning their own learning processes.Unfortunately, I was left a bit unfulfilled waiting for Soloway’s inspirational calls to action on fighting the patriarchy. Soloway explains the “Topple Principles” that were created to guide the development of Transparent. These included, “Our revolution must be intersectional,” and “Be brave.” They describe the formation of #TimesUp but with a generous sprinkling of name-droppings. Soloway tackles traditional gender roles and feeling as though they had fallen short of being the good mother, the good wife, the good daughter. These moments of vulnerability are powerful but too few.Soloway carefully confronts the sexual harassment allegations some trans co-stars made against Transparent lead Jeffrey Tambor. While candid about Tambor’s moodiness and downright aggression on set, Soloway relays the sexual harassment situation with an arm’s-length treatment that surprised and disappointed me.The main title, She Wants It, is spot-on as the major theme throughout the book is Soloway’s persistent quest for creative (and commercial) success. But based on the subtitle of the book, I wanted a deeper examination of the patriarchy from Soloway’s perspective as a (albeit white, privileged, and famous) nonbinary queer person in the entertainment industry. While I found the book intriguing as an entertainment memoir, it fell short as a manifesto on toppling the patriarchy. And this is okay – to be fair, Soloway never calls this a manifesto and they have more than enough juicy stories to fill a memoir as a heavy-hitter in Hollywood – but I wanted more. I was left wishing that Soloway had imparted more of their thoughts about how the reader can join the fray against the patriarchy.A quick read, the book is enjoyable overall. I would recommend this book to fans of Transparent or Jill Soloway’s other works; I could see how those who haven’t watched Transparent may not get as much out of the book. It’s also recommended for those who enjoy celebrity memoirs or those who crave reading nonbinary voices.

Transparent is based on Jill’s real life.Jill’s father was depressed and a mostly absent workaholic father during her childhood. After Jill and her sister, Faith, went to college, their parents divorced.During an early morning phone call, Jill is the first family member to which her father comes out to as trans. Jill’s first thought is this is part of her story and she was going to tell it. If her father can become Carrie London, why can’t she become the film writer/director she always aspired to be?Jill polished up an old script and it was green-lighted. After post-production is complete and Afternoon Delight is submitted to Sundance, Jill goes with Faith to meet their father for the first time as a woman. When her terminally ill aunt asks her to deliver a card to her father asking him not to dress as a woman at the aunt’s funeral, she begins writing Transparent.She Wants It is a great memoir of how someone hurtles the obstacles of getting a screenplay developed in Hollywood. It also incorporates a bit about Jill’s life as a wife and mother of two. There are many psychological asides about life and her own journey to understanding the non-binary world. I was expecting more about the real-life childhood experiences of having a trans parent. However, for those looking for a Hollywood memoir, this is a good choice. It just wasn’t what I was looking for and I never felt connected to the author though her personal story is heartfelt. 3 stars.Thanks to Crown Publishing and NetGalley for an advance copy.

Given the title of the memoir, I'd expected something different from the author. However, I thought it was less about Desire, Power, and Toppling the Patriarchy than it was about muddling through the writer's love life and an eerily close relationship with Faith, her sister, that she kept alluding to. It all felt oddly disjointed, jumping from topic to topic. Things moved so quickly you couldn't quite get a grasp on the scenes and what was being conveyed.Parts of the memoir were interesting. I was fascinated by how Transparent came to be and how the writer was recognizing her own privilege in writing the show, whom she hired, etc. But some of it felt like name dropping and unnecessary. The end of the novel touched briefly on the accusations against Jeffrey Tambor, which also don't paint the writer in a good light during a conversation with the victim.

Rabbi Grollman has written the perfect book for anyone going through a time of loss. Being a widow myself I know that it is very difficult to concentrate after the loss and therefore get the help needed from books. Rabbi Grollman has put together a book that is very precise, to the point and written in small sections that are easy to digest. I purchased this book and also one of his other books, Living When A Loved One Has Died, for my cousin who recently lost her husband very suddenly. These books are a tremendous help to her and her children as well as myself. I find myself rereading and referring to his books periodically on this long journey of widowhood. I would highly recommend Rabbi Grollman's books to anyone grieving.

Rabbi Grollman "gets" it. He understands the reality of the grief process. His affirmations of these feelings written in such simple and profound language, only a few sentences on a page, are for those of us with little energy to read a tome. It is comforting to read, "Grief takes time, and patience, and courage." This book is to be read and reread as the journey of grief continues to become a part of the daily lives of those of us who have lost loved ones. Highly recommended.

Grade: AAfter Devon Davenport hides her pregnancy then throws the baby into the trash, she's sent to a detention center to await the decision whether she will be tried as a juvenile or an adult. Frightened, angry, distrustful but most of all traumatized, Devon struggles to adjust to her new surroundings and recall the events of her pregnancy and giving birth with the help of her no-nonsense but compassionate attorney.As a psychologist, I felt Amy Efaw did a masterful job creating an authentic and sympathetic character in Devon, a young teen of a neglectful, narcissistic mother. Devon basically raised herself, while trying to ignore her sexually inappropriate mother. While lots of people reached out to Devon during the months she tried to hide her pregnancy, I could see why she pushed them away. After she gave birth, Devon kept pushing people away probably due to PTSD which she may have had even before becoming pregnant due to her childhood.Efaw slowly reveals the plot, as Devon recalls and develops insight into her why she did what she did. Although AFTER had an appropriate conclusion, Devon's story begs for a sequel. I enjoyed Efaw's writing style, character development and how she presented AFTER.THEMES: teens, pregnancy, juvenile detention, court, PTSD, neglect,AFTER is the type of novel that will appeal to both teens and adults. Some readers might think they'd never make the mistakes Devon did, and most probably wouldn't. Hopefully they'll be able to better understand the circumstances that lead to someone like Devon to commit a heinous crime, yet have the potential for rehabilitation.

Amy Efaw tackled a heavy subject matter effectively and with great lyrical style.While reading and listening some of "After" I took a little time to d research on the author. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Efaw spent a great deal of time researching teenage girls who have committed such an unthinkable act of dumbing their baby in trash dumpsters. It shows. The book was well thought out and believable. However at times I felt the other supporting characters were a little two dimensional and stereotypical.An intriguing read.

(Slight spoilish)Amy Efaw takes on a whether difficult and complex issue of abandoned newborn children in this dark, legal read in 'After'. I'll be honest, I had high hopes for this book it and felt let me down, so I have to complain.The writing was too draw out into getting to the initial course into Devon's motives and reasoning into "that night". If you ask me, "that night" the shock and surprise she felt, was more in my eyes the fear of dealing with her consequences, present to the possible future. It was also whether hard for me sympathize with the Devon character throughout most of the book because she appeared selfish at times and felt the need to blame her mother for her miserable life. Ok, this kid was a A+ student, sport's star destined to play for a D-1 college soccer someday, and well liked by many... but her life still suck? You know how many teens wished they had it that good just for themselves and keep their parents satisfied. Granted, Devon's mother Jennifer is a tad flirtatious and a few non-successful relationships, but she did the best she could to raise Devon even neglecting her own family just to make a life for the two of them. So to me, Devon's punishment at her mother was not justified at all. Also I was whether disappointed in Devon's lack of communication and awareness throughout most of the book, that became tiresome and frustrating. I don't know if Efaw was trying to hint at mental illness for Devon, but if you are going to go there -- do so or don't at all.However, while most of the book was a bit of a drag and has its flaws, the last hundred pages saved the day primarily as it surround Devon's fate in her hearing. Devon does get back into my good graces once the book ends.To conclude, I found it to be a respectable read and brave attempt, but it whether slow and drug out much too long for my liking. It does beg the question: Do you buy into Devon's denial-pregnancy or not? For me, I couldn't. Because WHAT IF the baby took a tragic fate after all? Efaw does a good job with her research but her execution through most of the book was not that effective.

Being a teacher of students like Charlie, I was drawn to the emotion of the book, “wishing” all my students who deal with what Charlie deals with could be as lucky as Charlie to land with an amazing aunt and uncle. After reading this book, you will want to make Charlie a part of your family.

Wonderful. With a bit of Ruby Holler (Creech) and Pax (Pennypacker), O'Connor weaves a touching story of finding the place you belong. Charlie, our protagonist, uses all the wishing tricks she can find, to make her wish come true. She is so busying wishing that she doesn't see that her wish has already been answered. A very touching story. This is one of my Top Ten reads for 2017. It is on my 2017 list that I recommend to teachers and parents. It is also a wonderful dog story in which the dog doesn't die!! :-)

I read this with my 7-year old son. I cried pretty much every few chapters. There is so much in this book that pulls at your heart strings.The only downside is that the concepts of an abondoned child can be a little scary for kids to think about. I did not realize that this book would delve into the topic so deeply, or I would have waited a few years before sharing it with my son. It does bring up some good talking points to discuss with your kids, and also does present some teachable moments.But as a warning, I would strongly advise reading the book yourself first (or reading it WITH your child) to make sure you want to approach all of these scary topics with them.By the way, my son LOVED the book. Every night he begged for "just one more chapter!"The book is written in a language similar to the way I imagine a child thinks. The author uses words like "waiting for mama to get her feet on the ground" and "broken family" and that her dad is in jail for "fighting." But she doesn't really expand on the legal aspects or the direct terminology of "abandonment" or "adoption," etc.I have to say that I myself feel like I got a lot out of this book. Like I mentioned, it will pull at your heart strings and it will really make you feel for what that little girl is going through. You will certainly understand the anger and resentment she feels inside, and all the ways she acts out because of it.The little girl's aunt in the story is just the perfect mother figure (patient, kind, encouraging, affectionate, but direct and honest). Reading this story makes me want to try to be a better mom for my kids.Read this book with your kids (or just for yourself). It will touch your heart and you will be thinking about it for days afterward. Just be prepared to discuss issues that might be upsetting to some children if you share it with them.Great read! :)

My fifth graders have not been able to put down Charlie's story! Barbara O'Connor's Wish will transport you to North Caroline and you won't want to come home! Add this to your TBR & library ASAP!

Barbara O'Connor doesn't disappoint. Charlie is a main character you will love and students can relate to. She's struggling with family issues and goes to live with her aunt. While making adjustments living there, Charlie makes a new friend and begins to care for a stray dog. The characters in this story (set in NC) make you feel right at home. I LOVED it and my students do too!

We loved this book! I read this to my 9 year old son and he really connected with the bond between the main character and her dog. It also brought up things that we had never talked about like how different families can be which is an important lesson to learn.

This is not Joshua, but his wife. I read this book to my three kids. The 9 year old liked it best. I was surprised by the word "hillbillies" but it was harmless enough. The main character's mother is severely depressed and her father is in jail for fighting. She moves in with her sweet aunt and uncle and begins to experience a new, rural, way of life. The writing employs some colloquial language and is very fun to read. The story is so tender and touching, I had to choke back tears reading the last page! I really recommend it.

This was a really cute story and very well written. It was good all the way through and had some funny places also to make me laugh. I really enjoyed it for a fiction book. I don't normally read fiction much but this was and exception and well worth reading.
