One Good Dish, by David Tanis

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Tanis (A Platter of Figs) turns his focus to an eclectic array of simple, casual meals that satisfy and are appropriate to be eaten at any time of day. Tanis's whimsy runs from bread, snacks, and condiments to vegetables, griddled foods, desserts, and more. Waffle-iron grilled cheese, gorgonzola and walnut crostini; and ham and gruyere bread pudding are highlights among the rustic offering of bread entries. Snack options are diverse and wholly appetizing, including smaller nibbles such as quail eggs with flavored salt and cucumber spears with dill, along with more substantial dishes such as potato salad with peppers and olives, polenta pizza with crumbled sage, and cold chicken with spicy scallion oil. His chapter titled Eating with a Spoon centers on pleasures in a bowl and contains a full-bodied, save-your-life garlic soup, rice porridge with salted egg, yellow risotto with saffron and lemon, and clams in the shell with fennel and parsley. Recipes based on vegetables are robust and inventively appealing, including long-cooked kale, which incorporates Spanish chorizo and red pepper flakes; well-charred endives with anchovy butter; and braised lettuce, sweet peas, and ham. Accompanied by numerous full-color photographs, the recipes in this collection are suitable for solo dining or entertaining guests and are certain to please. (Nov.)

I found quite a few good dishes in this book. I'm not sure it deserves the breathless praise I've seen for this book. But it does have some good ideas and some of the dishes that do not appeal to me are easily modifiable. I found the book heavy on bread and vegetables. I would have liked more recipes using lean proteins. And for an author who professes not to care too much about deserts, there are quite a few. I don't cook deserts so this part of the book was mostly just for interest rather than recipes I would actually make. Overall a worthwhile buy, but not one of the all time greats.

After 30 years of trying cookbooks, I have my personal chef in David. I have all three books and cannot get over howdelicious my meals have become. He has his finger on simplicity, a very difficult, unappreciated art. There is also an elegance tohis choices. Nothing is every too heavy or too rich, or, not enough at all. Nor hard to find, or too expensive. And, there is a great balance of variety in his books . Each one varies slightly in direction, but the results are all so pleasing. Couldn't be happier. Live well!

When I first leafed through the book, I was a touch annoyed at what seemed a few too many "lazy" recipes. To illustrate, I am talking about the likes of prosciutto and fruit (literally slices of ham combined with fresh fruit), waffle iron grilled cheese (only real difference to the ordinary version being the waffle pattern) or garlic toast (recommending "fruity" extra virgin olive oil doesn't really reinvent the classic).HOWEVER, the rest of Tanis's collection amply made up for my initial irritation. Those recipes are sheer genius. And I am not just talking about the more elaborate ones like his delectable Tunisian meatballs. Spicy stovetop flatbreads make a simple but impressive side, hot or cold mussels on the half-shell are great prepare-ahead stunners for a party, and I dare you to stop eating the anchovy-garlic spread. You'll be unable to. Just as the quick scallion kimchee will be a life changer if you follow Tanis's recommendation of adding it to your ham sandwich.I could go on, waxing lyrical about the fortifying winter minestrone, easy and lovely speckled sushi rice with nori and fresh-pickled ginger, or highly addictive sweet-and-salty nut brittle. But really, you should just do yourself and everyone you cook for a favour and buy this beautifully photographed and all-round delightful gem of a cookbook.

Yum Tunisian Meatballs!Update : I have made more of the dishes in this book since my last review. I am a mediocre cook but this book helps me be an exceptional one! It is by far my favorite cookbook now. This will be my go-to house warming party gift going forward.

I love to read about what great chefs cook at home. Not the gravity-defying plates put together with a huge assortment of ingredients in their restaurants - a sauce, plus a glaze, plus a garnish in one dish, but what they cook and eat without an audience. The shorter the ingredient list and the more accessible, the better.Google "My Favorite Simple Roast Chicken Recipe" by Thomas Keller. You'll never roast chicken any other way. Or follow what Nigel Slater does with veggies from his backyard garden in "Tender".Look at the cover picture of "One Good Dish". Thinly sliced radishes. Sprinkled with sea salt. A dollop of whipped creme fraiche. And a grind of black pepper. Four ingredients. A really delightful way to savour radishes, even if you weren't a radish fan (I certainly wasn't).Forget raw kale or kale chips. Kale simmered to silken tenderness in a chorizo stew elevates it to something else. David Tanis is a master and I have all his cookbooks. But this one is something else. Who knew red wine diluted with a bit of cold water and ice can be so refreshing? And his chai made from scratch - I am from India - is the real deal.I have hundreds of cookbooks by a pantheon of world-renowned chefs. This is the kind of book I go back to time and time again.

I finally managed to download this to my PC so I could view it in full format. My Kindle Paperwhite is not a good product for a cook book. I bought it because David Tanis is one of my favorite chefs on the New York Times cooking website. None of the recipes in this book are on the site. My penchant for cook books has always been, 'If you find one good recipe, it was worth it.'

Based on the reviews, I purchased this book and glad that I did. They are all correct. Beautiful cookbook - no wasted words or recipes. No tricks. Honest and simple cooking outside the American square with flavor. Nice change from oversized cookbooks with over complicated bursts of flavours. I own all of the Yottam Ottolenghi cookbooks and this one gives the same inspiration and is less daunting. Will purchase again as gifts for new foodies and busy friends.

This isn't a typical cookbook. It's a labor of love - a collection of small dishes any of which would star in a meal. I hesitated for a long time to buy it. I mostly make vegetarian meals for my clients, and this isn't vegan by a long stretch. I am so glad I bought it though. I intend to make every single condiment, dish, dessert and drink this little gem contains. My only regret is that there is not enough information about how long things may be kept or how to freeze portions of a recipe so as to cut down on final preparation time. Not that advice wasn't given - just not as much as I'd like.

Great cookbook, made several things from this! onion tart, yummy, sicilian sauce is GREAT, and many others. I bought for a friend and she made the tunisian meatballs and loved them. Really has flavorful dishes!

I am a school librarian, and all the Bad Kitty books are hits with students from Kindergarten to 6th grade. Girls and Boys alike love them and reluctant readers demand them. Younger students enjoy reading them with parents or older siblings and older students get a lot of information from the non-fiction facts that are interspersed with the story. I honestly cannot recommend them enough!

My grand-daughter loves the entire series of "Bad Kitty". I love it that Nick Bruel depicts a cat that is sometimes naughty but is still cherished and loved by her family. And it's a great message for my grand-daughter (who just adores cats) to see that cats can be naughty but still have a place in the home. This book tells the story of what happens when Kitty is sick, and must be brought to the Vet. Nick Bruel's depiction of the Vet as a competent, caring professional is on-spot, and his subtle humor keeps the adults ready this book chucking along with the main story line.

My son (7) adores the Bad Kitty books. there's enough illustration so that even though he doesn't read easily (he's in first grade, reading but still prefers that I read to him), he happily flips through the Bad Kitty books on his own and then finds himself reading things aloud to me. I never point this out to him of course. He thinks the illustrations and the stories are hysterical. We could always use more Bad Kitty in our house.

I think that Nick Bruel has definitely outdone himself this time. The beginning was hysterically and the nice twist with pussycat paradise showed that Kitty might think that puppy isn't so bad after all. All and all I think that this was a very sweet and touching book( with a few laughs sneaked in of course) and I can't wait to see what the next Bad Kitty book will be about

I had high hopes for this book but it didn’t have any substance. It could have had but the writer must have just not thought it through for humor. This is the only one I’ve read, I got it for my son for Christmas. I also got a chapter book of bad kitty so we will see how this one goes...

My son loves this author and this series of books. These books really got him into reading. While he's reading these books I hear him giggling and he gets so excited that he has to come and tell me what's going on in the story. It's really great seeing him excited while he's reading.

This series is a big hit with the kids, and really fun to read aloud to them. It lends itself well to story time, but my daughter reads it to herself too. This was another winner in the bad kitty series.

My son found this series a few years ago and he just can't get enough of them. We have every bad kitty book and he reads the multiple times. He is now 9 years old and even though it only takes him an hour to finish the book he just can't resist this laugh out loud series.

#199,699 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

After everything, I have to say I was disappointed with this book. I did enjoy the story, overall. But, based on the book blurb, I had much higher expectations. For fans of Libba Bray's The Diviners, this is far from that level. My biggest problem: I felt like I was thrown into the middle of a series and the world-building was just skipped. The whole book is built around a society divided between hemopaths and regs (regulars). Hemopaths have afflicted blood that gives them artistic gifts - wordsmiths, songsmiths, thespians, artists, etc. And for some reason this affliction gives them a serious aversion to iron, and apparently several other metals to a lesser degree? The reader gets a lot of information about what wordsmiths and songsmiths (and other talents) can do, but there is absolutely no link between these gifts and the blood affliction or iron aversion. The reader is told the "affliction" manifests during teenage years, that it is very painful, and then you have a gift and a metal aversion, but that's all you get. There is no other information about why the blood disorder causes the metal aversion or how the gifts are linked. It was almost like the author had an idea about characters with a blood issue and it segregating them from society, and an idea about cool magical talents, and just decided to use both. There was not enough world building to relate these things together. When I read the book blurb, I had envisioned hemopathy being something magic in the blood of these people and the controversy behind it was going to be trying to obtain and use hemopath blood. Almost like a Prohibition dealing with magic blood instead of alcohol? And the reference to an infamous gangster made me think there was going to be a lot more about gangsters... But actually it's nothing like that. The reader is told that scientists don't know a lot about hemopathy, there's an asylum where they are doing all kinds of secret experiments to "cure" hemopaths, but you get no information as to whether this is a worldwide new disorder, or where hemopathy came from, or how it manifests. The two sides of hemopathy just don't link together well.Furthermore, I got the impression there would be more gangster and Prohibition/speakeasy action, but actually this book is set before the beginning of Prohibition, which was a big disappointment to me. The clubs were kind of underground clubs, and there were raids, but the raids were about performing illegal hemopath shows, not about serving illegal booze. It was like the author liked the era, the clothes, and the idea of the secretive clubs, but didn't feel like bothering with the rest of the 1920s. And the club that was the focus of the book was the Cast Iron Club - having read the book I'm not really sure why the title is Iron Cast. The story is not bad, I just kept waiting for information and world-building that never came. I had been excited about this book for months, and it just didn't deliver.

Iron Cast is set in an alternate 1919 version of Boston, where a subset of society have an affliction called hemopathy, which allows them to create illusions via different art forms. The premise of Iron Cast is intriguing, but the book doesn't provide enough world building to really expand on hemopathy. We see Corinne create illusions for people - she can make them think they see a building burning or that their hat has turned into a rabbit - while Ada manipulates people's emotions through music. There's some background on hemopathy as a blood condition, how it manifests, and its side effects, but very little else. The historical setting also feels very vague, and it often felt as though Soria set the novel in 1919 merely because it was right before Prohibition. There are some callouts to the late 1910s, but not enough to really feel like a firm setting. The novel could have been set in the modern era and not much would have changed. I appreciate a good historical fantasy novel, but if you're looking for a lot about the time period, you won't find that here.Soria provides a wonderful female friendship between Ada and Corinne, though Corinne is incredibly grating. There's been a trend in YA fiction for the past decade of having a sarcastic, feisty female character and this is apparently meant to be funny and refreshing, but often comes off as rude and mean. Corinne is definitely rude and mean. Most of her interactions have her judging someone before they even do anything, and being oblivious to the plight of others. I spent most of the book wondering why Ada was even friends with her. Ada, on the other hand, is well-balanced between worry and collectedness, though her characterization seems less nuanced than Corinne's. All the other characters are fairly one-note, to the detriment of the story. They're there for the ride and as supporting players, but aren't fleshed out enough that you grow to care for them.Despite the intriguing premise, the plot itself can't seem to decide whether it wants to be a fantasy adventure or a gangster prohibition caper. The plot starts off as primarily about hemopathy and the capture, imprisonment, and torture of hemopaths and then veers wildly into a story about prohibition where hemopathy is almost an afterthought. The last third of the novel feels very rushed, almost to the point that I wonder if Soria had to meet her deadline and just pushed everything out at once. Almost all of the "twists" and betrayals are expected, and having so many of these twists and betrayals happen in the last third of the novel was exhausting.Overall, Iron Cast had potential, but too much world building, character development, and plot development fell by the wayside. It's an okay read if you have a few hours, and while the aspect of hemopathy is memorable, not much else is, which is unfortunate.

The friendship between Ada and Corinne is really the key relationship between two people in this book. I wouldn't say we really see it evolve, but it's the core relationship that helps Ada and Corinne individually navigate the changes in Boston and in the Cast Iron. They're so very different (different ethics and talents and desires), but they're there for each other, always wanting to be on each other's side and by each other's side. They also both have important familial relationships, and those do have arcs. I like where Ada's goes (her mother, Nyah, is amazing), but I love Corinne's family arc. It fits so strongly with what Corinne is learning personally in this book.I appreciated how little of world history was changed here because of hemopathy. Ada's point of view, in particular, brings up a lot about race and histories of slavery and colonialism. A lesser book might have minimized racism because of the large amounts of anti-hemopathy in the story here, but Iron Cast doesn't.There was one thing about when the HPA came into existence that I thought caused a continuity error? One instance of "just a friend."

Provides a solid overview of banking law

Good introduction to banking but doesn't really talk about more recent developments in banking regulation, despite its recent publication date.

Thorough overview and easy to read. This is a great resource to demystify the regulatory structure around financial institutions in the US. Accessible even with a minimal finance background. Ideal for entry level bank associates, regulators, and auditors.

This book help me getting a grade over 3.0 in Malloy's funky final exam. So It's good. Use it to your advantage

It's difficult to find a banking hornbook that doesn't pre-date the 2008 financial crisis. This book, having been written in 2011, is definitely relevant. It was published before the OTS was shut down, though, so I had to keep remembering what functions the FDIC was going to take over, etc.But for someone with no knowledge of banking regulation or the financial system, this book was a God-send. It had an excellent discussion of Basels I-III, and walked you through the entire timeline, from getting your charter to going into receivership. Malloy consistently references the applicable statute sections, so it's a good idea to keep your statute book handy in order to cross reference and annotate.I am 100% glad that I purchased this, and would absolutely do it again.
