The ages of the travelers and the adventures they describe vary greatly: Henry Mazer's experiences as an 18-year-old gunner shot down over Czechoslovakia during World War II; Lowry's encounters as an 11-year-old communicating with Japanese neighbors without a common language. Probably the most memorable entry is Piper Dellums' story of a bigoted South African exchange student who is stunned and distressed to realize that her host family in Washington, D.C., is African American. Dr Bernstein has written excellent books. He backs up what he says with clear statistics presented in a logical manner. I'm convinced this is the best way to build your portfolio. Proper asset allocation for one's own risk tolerance is vital. The principles outlined in this book have helped my portfolio exceed my expectations.

The Intelligent Asset Allocator sits right next to 'Stocks for the Long Run' and 'The Intelligent Investor' on my bookshelf; it's a classic.I enjoy thinking about asset allocation and how to best structure a portfolio. No matter what studies you may trust the most, asset allocation is clearly a major driver of portfolio returns. This book invites you to deconstruct your assumptions and build them back up again. I would have liked a book ten times as long, but then I really enjoy seeing all the intricacies. Even so, there is a lot hinted at in these pages that gives you further directions to explore. Even if you are familiar with diversification, various asset classes, portfolio theory and the reasons for indexing, there is a lot of value here. I will admit the book is growing somewhat dated with respect to the time frame it discusses, but the book loses nothing in relevance.I am still building assets, and because this book referenced both standard and aggressive growth portfolios (I employ a portfolio very similar to the 'Madonna' Portfolio he mentions, with a couple key differences), I knew I was on the same trail as the author, which was incredibly gratifying for me. For those with different backgrounds, the insights you find relevant may differ.I will say the book would benefit from a greater discussion of various portfolios. How important is it to mimic the market (or rather, what is the risk associated with failing to look like the market, which is true to some degree of every portfolio?) What is the role of TIPS in a portfolio (or rather, when does Inflation become a central risk? I maintain that you only need them in retirement, but am eager to hear different opinions.) How much risk should you take with the credit portion of your portfolio (I use intermediate term treasuries myself - covariance vs equities is just too superior not to, even with the risk of rising rates. Again, I like to hear other opinions.)With reference to portfolios I've read about: the 'Gone Fishing Portfolio' was also amazingly comprehensive, if not as focussed on portfolio building as the IAA, and the portfolio it proposes is pretty solid. Swenson's books are very good, and his suggested portfolio is top notch, if history is any judge. Swedroe suggests a pretty bullet-proof portfolio, so even though returns won't blow you out of the water, they should be solid, and the ride should be serene (which can be very important in a retirement portfolio, as lack of volatility both increases SAFEMAX and decreases the odds of running out of money early... i.e. the trade-off for lower returns can yield a higher cash flow.) All of these authors are worth the read.

Bernstein has done a nice job in debunking the most important myth of the investment field - namely, that it is possible to beat the market on a sustained basis. It is an unfortunate reality that the investment management industry - stockbrokers, mutual funds, and many investment advisors - are still able to sell their products despite the long term research that Bernstein cites, showing plainly that no one beats the market consistently in the long haul. Earlier in my investment "career" I tried several of these "experts" and was frustrated that they made more money on the investments than I did.What Bernstein does do well is to collect the results of much academic research with his own analysis, and clearly show thefacts about investment performance. The principle findings are that each type of financial instrument - large cap stock, small cap stock, bond, etc., have characteristic historical performance; and that the most important decision investors face is their allocation of their investments across these classes. He gives simple but powerful suggestions.Bernstein's goal is to make this information available to all, whether or not the reader understands financial math and statistics. I believe that he does a good job at this, separating the mathematical and statistical details for those who want to see them.I would strongly recommend this to any investors who are still purchasing individual stocks or actively managed mutual funds.

I bought 'The Intelligent Asset Allocator' right after loosing my shirt in the dot com bust about nine years ago. I came to the realization that there had to be a better method to sound long-term investing than chasing highly volatile internet stocks. For most part, I have followed a broad asset allocation investment strategy with re-allocation annually. The big lesson: I also learned to enjoy life, volunteer, be thankful, encourage others, and nurture great friendships.What I liked about this book are the explanations about risk and reward in a straight-forward understandable math context. Risk is defined as the standard deviation of the annual returns for a particular asset (e.g, stock, fund, bond). Dr. Bernstein uses a set of interesting coin toss investment examples throughout several of the chapters to illustrate this risk/reward strategy. Nice approach to introducing the topic for each chapter. By Chapter 3, simple risk/reward plots are shown based on different ownership percentages of two assets. The book does a great job explaining the rationale for selecting portfolio percentages for various asset classes.Actually, Dr. Bernstein has published a collection of books on asset allocation, each with a different level of technical content. The Intelligent Asset Allocator The Four Pillars of Investing The Investor's ManifestoI found the following quote on his website appealing: "When I wrote The Intelligent Asset Allocator, I thought I was producing a volume for the average investor. Turns out I was wrong: the book's audience was closer to the average electrical engineer. So I tried a little harder and produced The Four Pillars of Investing. Close, but no cigar: still lots of complaints about all the math and graphs."Regardless of which book you acquire, asset allocation and portfolio theory is worth understanding for any investor.

Using a kindle, I was unable to access any of the numerous charts. Without them the rest is confusing and, IMHO, ueless

I liked this book very much, the pics are fantastic, tons of color photos of boxes and prizes. The only reason it's not perfect in my eyes is the writer's habit of trying to be funny in EVERY paragraph. Almost every other sentence has a joke, pun, metaphor or wisecrack which got old very quickly. Plus the author actually sticks political jokes and slams in here and there which is really unnecessary in a book about CEREAL BOXES! I couldn't care less about someone's opinion one leaning or another when I am trying to read about how to preserve old collectibles. Buy it for the pics, not the information, as you'll have to surf through cheesy jokes the whole time, perhaps he did this to pad it out and make it look like there was more info than there really was.

This 216 page softbound volume features over 500 very large, very sharp, full color photos that you'll love. The book provides a good background for this collectible. It covers boxes, premiums, mail-in offers and more. Everything is arranged by year. I especially liked all of the offers that the cereal companies provided in the 50's. Brought back many memories. I wish I still had some of the goodies shown that I had at that time. A real memory jogger. A true bonanza worth adding to your collection.

What a wonderful book! Worth twice the price. Filled with color photos of some great cereal box pictorials. Looking through the book was like taking a happy walk through a phase of my childhood. I think some of the pictures on the boxes were far more interesting than the actual items they offered inside or through the mail. You will not regret purchasing this book for fun or reference. I have to give it five stars.

Bought this for a present for my daughter and son in law. With 3 active boys there is always something to learn.I read through and thought it had a lot of good insight in helping kids develop their skills ans feelings. Parents can learn it is not all about them. Should be promoted by local little leagues and sports teams.

I think this should be a mandatory manual for sports parents. Covers everyone from parents of rec type athletes to the serious elite club players.

I found this book incredibly helpful and interesting. The way Dr. Fish breaks down the chapters allowed me to cut through the clutter and find the sections that were most relevant to me. I really feel like I am now better prepared to help my son get the most out of his little league experience.

The conclusion of this book is the best part, but I found that I needed to read the '101 ways' to really understand it. I suggest you scan the table of contents to see if what leads you to look into this book is addressed, and just buy it if any are even close. If you think you need this book.... you do. Buy it, read it.

This is a much needed book in my opinion. I want to do everything I can to help my child. Also recommended: 'Everything You Never Wanted To Know About Your Nonprofit Corporation' by Ms. Cellaneous, The Unknown Attorney, for a look at kids sports and booster clubs from a legal and protective (of your kids) viewpoint.

I am a college adjunct faculty English teacher and I wanted a simple edition with notes for my class to read in the fall. I was going to order 20 of these for the class, but I am so glad I first bought one for myself. The paper edition doesn't have any spaces between the speakers, either, so it is difficult to read, even if it were written in language my students, mostly college freshmen, could easily understand. They would give up on this edition. Also, there are absolutely NO NOTES for students that define and explain some of the more obscure vocabulary and written expressions. The text underneath this edition on Amazon did NOT say that there were no notes. It is not helpful AT ALL for a new reader of Shakespeare or a reader who only read it in high school unwillingly. I am going to order something else for my class.

As noted by other reviewers, this edition provides but a fraction of what it promises. There are no annotations, no photographs — a historical impossibility of monumental absurdity — of the author, nor any of the other promised features. Beyond that, it does not even include a dramatis personnae, a hallowed standard for any dramatic work. Even the ratings provided by Kindle were for other Shakespeare plays. ... Is there no quality control for works published by Kindle? This was such a sham that it makes me very leery about future purchases from Kindle, especially for editions with which I am not familiar.

This is probably the worst book I've ever received. Characters are not marked. There is no formatting. It is just a wall of text. Don't buy this. Get a different copy of this play.

When I saw Romeo & Juliet in the theatre -- on its opening weekend -- after the film in the lobby I saw dozens of teenaged girls sobbing in each other's arms. I've never seen anything like that before or since. That alone marks the film as a masterpiece, and nothing any critic can say is relevant next to that emotional reaction. Those sobbing teenagers are absolute proof that any critic who panned this film is a fool.Di'Caprio wasn't very famous at that point (though I believe he'd already been nominated for an oscar for an indy film). Later that night, I had dinner with friends and predicted that this boy would become the biggest star in Hollywood -- by tomorrow! I was off by a couple of years. Rare in film history has there been such a perfect casting -- Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo. The mythical balcony scene is freshly designed and executed wonderfully, bringing the myth to life before our eyes. But the crowning glory and superpower of this film is the 'love at first sight' scene - ironic in that there are no words spoken (words being Shakespeare's superpower). It's all done with the eyes by the two young genius actors, combined with inspired camera work and the devastating vocal performance of Des'ree. This is one of the most beautiful, greatest, and most powerful scenes in cinematic history.What is this emotion -- love at first sight? It might only happen two or three times in our entire lives. It isn't real love. So is it just trivial, adolescent silliness? I think it is much more than that -- and so did Shakespeare. What is our emotional relationship with our desires that can never be? We're haunted forever by the impossiblity of perfect love as much as we were ever thrilled by the fantasy of it. Baz Luhrmann's 'Romeo & Juliet' taps deeply into the impossible longings that never leave us. It is a masterpiece.

As an English teacher, teaching Shakespeare can be quite a challenge. For modern students, trying to connect the concepts, theme, and setting of Romeo and Juliet can be quite a challenge. Keeping them engaged in the struggle of Shakespearean language is even more so. This version of the play is accurate and most importantly, entertaining. We, as a class, will read a portion of the play and then I will show this film to help cement ideas, dialogue, and characters. The students love the film, laugh, and respond better to the play than without!

I did not want to see this movie for years after its release. I consider myself a purist where the Bard of Avon is concerned. I adored the films Henry V & Much Ado About Nothing, both directed and starring Kenneth Branaugh, Richard III starring and directed by Olivier. Period costumes, true to Shakespeare's lines, etc. I began to change when I realized (fairly early on in watching it) that 10 Things I Hate About You, was a delightful retelling of The Taming Of The Shrew. Eventually I watched this and found a gem. From the factions portrayed as rival gangs, to the outstanding delivery of the lines. The true crowning jewel is the over the top performance by the inimitable John Leguizamo. As Tibalt, John is amazing.

This is a very Zen approach to mindfulness meditation. I t is easy to read and understand...but it can't make a busy mind slow down for meditation. That's up to me, and this book has given me the tools.

“We are simply not paying enough attention to notice that we are not paying attention.”I have a meticulous system for taking notes when I read, but it didn’t work with Mindfulness in Plain English. Underlining 90% of the book doesn’t help highlight the most important lessons. This is the best book on mindfulness and meditation that I’ve read to date.I read this book as a meditation refresher several years after I started meditating. I expected to take away a few tips on how to breathe better, how to deal with feeling sleepy and how to cope with pain and numb legs. I didn’t expect all the profound insight on the true meaning of mindfulness.This book tells you what meditation is and what it isn’t. If you have an allergy to the word meditation, this is probably the book to start with because as the title indicates, it’s in plain English. There’s very little of the type of lingo that tends to turn a lot of people away from meditation. The book discusses things like loving kindness in a way that is approachable and understandable. It gives concrete tips on how to deal with some of the challenges you face not only during meditation, but in life. I had so many ah-ha moments that I actually started saying “ah-ha” while reading it.Even though this book is centered on a Buddhist meditation practice called Vipassana, or insight, meditation, the book felt secular to me. You can get a lot out of it regardless of your religious or non-religious affiliation.Even if you never plan to meditate, this book is still worth reading. If you’ve ever had anxiety or depression, if you ever get nervous or antsy, if you have difficulties concentrating, if you get distracted easily, read this book. If you’ve ever felt jealous, resentful, or just a little out of control, read this book. If you have regrets about the past or feel uncertain about the future, read this book. Mindfulness in Plain English is one the very best books written as an introduction to mindfulness and Buddhist meditation. It is far more than simply in introduction to meditation. It is a masterfully explained “how to” handbook, a nuts and bolts kind of map, that walks you through how to meditate and deal with the many typical obstacles which virtually all people deal with as they begin and progress. What sets this book apart from other leading books in this category, is that Bhante Gunaratana is from the Theravada Buddhist tradition, classicly trained and ordained in the form of practice he calls Vipassana, which places great emphasis on mindfulness. He explains, “Vipassana is the oldest of Buddhist meditation practices. The method comes directly from the Satipatthana Sutta, a discouorse attributed to the Buddha himself.”Bhante Gunaratana writes with a very engaging and relaxed style, which makes the book easy to follow and even humorous at times. He speaks with candor and right from the beginning he emphasizes that, “Meditation is not easy. It takes time and energy. It also takes grit, determination and discipline.” But, then he goes on to emphasize that meditation should be rejuvenating and liberating, and in fact, that most seasoned practitioners have a good sense of humor, because the practice creates a calmness and relaxed perspective about life. The author’s explanations about key concepts is stated in a fresh manner, for instance explaining that the word “suffering” in Buddhism needs to be thoroughly understood to realize that in the original Pali language it does not just mean agony of the body, but that it also means a sense of dissatisfaction that is typical of what all people deal with on a daily basis. He also emphasizes that Vipassana, unlike some other Buddhist traditions, ranks mindfulness and awareness right up beside concentration as a means to liberation. Thus a great part of the focus of meditation is a combination of concentration and mindfulness.The author takes the time to explain differences in approach between Vipassana Buddhism and other forms, such as classic Mahayana sects like Zen Buddhism and Tibetan traditions. The other key element to this book is the great detail he goes into to explain precisely how to meditate, breaking it down regarding not using any mental recitations at all to help your focus, (which is something some other forms suggest you do). He explains multiple ways to help you focus through counting your breaths in different manners, emphasizing that different ways work for different people. And always, he emphasizes to be gentle with yourself and stay calm and patient as you experiment and practice. This last point is something he emphasizes again and again, making sure we understand that if our practice is causing suffering then we are clearly not practicing correctly. He addresses how to plan your practices and how to deal with common things such as your legs falling asleep, boredom, distractions, discouragement, drowsiness and inability to concentrate.

Beautifully readable, down-to-earth, and full of wisdom without being esoteric and all mysterious. Tells mindfulness like it is, in all the ways it can work for you. The guy is legit (he sounds like a lovely American writer--no awkward English) and he's definitely an open-minded, non-sectarian Buddhist. Very useful, very helpful, very wise. - from a longtime explorer of Buddhist wisdom and many other spiritualities too, over 40 years.) This is the one you want (I've heard it recommended many times!)

I know we all hear this all the time and it's very subjective but.... this book has moved me so much deeper into the levels of my meditation. One reviewer said it's way to simple - meant for beginners only. This is a disservice. It CAN be for a beginner but if there is a seasoned meditator like myself - there is so much to get out of this book, you're just not open to it. Prejudging or thinking you're beyond. This book is excellent. I also hear he is repetitive... uuhhmm yes, that is the way we get it drummed into our busy non-paying attention minds. This book in no way is a quick read through. I have read it through several times now, and by one page a day and really think and apply what he is trying to teach us. Please, if your even thinking about it, try this book. Remember - you can get as much and so very much as you want or you can prejudge what it may appear to be and lose out big time..
