Wonderful story! I really enjoyed her approach to sharing events in her life. What a tough cookie! I had no expectations that the book would be any more than what it was, a young, amazing girl telling her story as an athlete. Every once in a while I would remember that she is deaf and that would add to the incredible story, but she did not focus on that challenge; it was more about her journey in a very difficult and dangerous sport that she loves! I am so glad she retired in one piece and is giving back by teaching motocross to girls and women. You go girl!

My 16 year-old daughter is a reluctant reader at best, but a great motocross rider, riding since the age of 4. She has been fascinated by Ashley Fiolek since she was about 12, but never knew of her deafness until a couple of years later watching her on the podium! This is a well written biography that will interest most any child or parent for that matter. It shows the ups and downs of a child's motocross career from the first ride to a Pro career. It isn't a difficult read, but contains plenty of technical terms for readers familiar with motocross, while not confusing non-riders. I really enjoyed reading about Ashley's family's choices that helped her deal with her deafness and encouraging her unique talent. Well worth the read.

Bought this book for my 6 year old Daughter. Ashley is her all time favorite rider!!Ashley is her idol!!Great read, lots of encouraging words for younger girls as well as TRUTH and the hardship and sacrifices that goes into being a serious motocross competitor not just for the rider but their family as well. Ashley is an amazing talented rider and an absolutely wonderful role model for the younger female riders.

I absolutely loved this book! It's a terrific read for fans of motocross, but also tons of fun for those who don't know a lot about the sport - Fiolek does a wonderful job of explaining what certain motocross terms mean to welcome new fans. I've already read it twice. Fiolek's memoir is detailed and fun to read. It was worth every penny.

I enjoyed every page of your book; the ups and downs of motocross life, the successes, the setbacks all make it what it is. Your positive attitude and reflective nature make this book beautiful to read. As a woman who came to dirt bikes late in life, I crave female role models in this sport. Good book

I was recommended this book by a friend. I knew nothing about motocross before reading it but love biographies about fascinating personalities. Ashley's story is really cool and inspiring and it's a great example of someone who took a disability (her deafness in this case) and was able to turn it into an asset.Great read, I recommend it!

As another reviewer said, you have to have an open mind to read this book. And, I think, a twisted sense of humor. It's like the author took some facets of reality, put them in a can, shook it up and tossed them out to see what happened. I think some of the pieces broke along the way.Nathan lives in Dead Donkey, Nevada where everything sucks (but not for long). The buses run one way, the travel agency charges low prices to come to town and gouges people trying to get out. Nathan's neighbor shoots at salesmen, street lamps and anything else that strikes his fancy. Arson is a booming business, aided by incompetent firemen.Then Nathan dies and finds out what a bureaucratic nightmare death can be.This could be the strangest book I ever read. I gave it 5 stars because as weird as it was, it worked and I think Andrew deserves some credit for pulling it off.

I loved this book! The main character was raised by his father because his mother left before he was born. While nonsensical, the sentence works just fine in the context of the novel. A favorite author and acquaintance once told me that a concept doesn't have to work in my reality if it works in its own, and in the bureaucratic world of Andrew Stanek, it doesn't seem the least bit odd for a mother to leave her unborn child with its father.If Lewis Carroll, Douglas Adams,and Monty Python collaborated on a novel, the finished product might look something like this.

I like humorous fiction, but this was terrible. Perhaps children would find it entertaining, but not me. It is very repetitive and the jokes just aren't very good. I gave up after a few chapters, and I'm glad I got it when it was free.

The first four chapters started out good. But the writing style in the fifth chapter turned high-schoolish; too much detail thrown in that's unnecessary to the story.The first four chapters were quite Monty Python-esque, with heavy influence, as others have noted, from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I think I detected a bit of P. G. Wodehouse, too. All three are worthy of emulation, but I think the author tried too hard.The author shows a lot of promise. I hope he hones his skill with writing courses. Orson Scott Card's free writing class/lessons and workshops at his official web site, Hatrack River (amzn doesn't allow urls in reviews), would likely fit Stanek.As long as this ebook is free, I can kinda/sorta recommend it for Python/HGttG fans of any age, as you will enjoy the first four chapters. Chapter 5 will be the make-or-break to determine if you want to finish. I did not finish.

For the many of us missing Douglas Adams and his twisted view of life and the universe, this is a lovely "echo" of his writing style.Its not really much of a "story" but could have been a chapter from "The Hitchhikers Guide." If you enjoyed that book, this will be right up your alley. All of which may sound like I'm being flippant...certainly not...to be compared to Adams is a massive compliment. And if you have heavy disdain for bureaucracy, you'll love the satire here.

This is a good book that had me laughing in many places, but, as other reviewers have said, it's a little bit muddled in terms of the setting and characters mostly being included to set up a running gag about bureaucrats and the disasters they create both in the realm of the living and the dead. When reading this, keep in mind that it's an invented world, similar to the universe where The Tick lives... where insane people and odd happenings are just expected in the worst city in the world, Dead Donkey. There are a lot of tangents where the story jumps the tracks to build for a laugh. While I didn't give this book five stars, I'd still recommend it as a light read for some chuckles. If you miss the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, you'll enjoy reading these books as a similar... style and craziness.

This is a, well, "different" book. It pokes fun at bureaucrats, death, bureaucrats, Nevada, and bureaucrats. And paperwork. The thesis is just plausible enough to make you wonder if it truly is rooted in reality and also makes you wonder at times if the author knows something we don't know (probably not, but still!). I wouldn't hesitate to read other books in this series from this author.P.S. - Four stars because John Steinbeck didn't write it and the author hasn't won a Pulitzer prize. Yet. Besides, the bureaucrats wouldn't sign an "Authorization to give this book a five star review on Amazon" before lunch.

Madcap is an understatement. The best part of this book is that the author not only pokes fun at bureaucracy, but at the reader, too. (Who bothered to lookup the word tontineYou Are Dead. (Sign Here Please) or Quaestor?) So many laugh out loud moments to take away from the winter doldrums (yes, I have cabin fever). Looking forward to You Are a Ghost (sign here, please).

I was less than happy with this book. Although it did describe the different ways that your brain gets happy, it really was less than satisfactory in telling how to help your brain get happy in those ways, especially in regards to seratonin. There was a lot of repetition. When I finished the book, I still felt like I needed more information. It is good for a for a general introduction to the different things that affect your brain, but if you are looking for a way to move forward, this may not be your best choice. On the other hand, I haven't found anything better, so maybe I am looking for something that doesn't exist.

This is a great book! Finally, an explanation for why I tend to go back to habits of dealing with emotions that I learned in my early adolescence, and why those tendencies really never go away. I have used the things that I learned in this book to help with weight loss. It has been so helpful and uplifting to have an explanation of how my emotions work, and how I can work with my brain chemistry rather than feeling like a victim of it.

This is a fairly light read full of wisdom and powerful insights that explains the main neurotransmitters that affect us day-to-day. It is helpful for getting clear on the different neurotransmitters and how they show up in our lives in a simple and basic way. In some cases it is a little over-simplified, but this is a welcome trade-off for making the ideas easy to understand. At first I rated this 4 stars because I glossed past some of the concepts thinking they were overly simple, but this is what comes from someone who really understands that material, and in-fact they really work.

This book is for those who must understand "how" and "why" before they can be convinced to do something. Most people want to read about what to do to solve a problem; they are not interested in learning all about four brain chemicals' influences to our behavior in gritty details. This book is for those who must know the neural science behind it.Everything makes sense in evolution's stand point. when an idea makes sense to me, I can do it. I learned how to look at my day and generate some happy chemicals in my brain to improve my life.If you are one who wants to know why before knowing how to be happier, this book's for you.

Howard Rheingold is renown for his insights and involvement in the use and social implications of emerging technology -especially in how networking facilitates interaction (especially the pervasive networking enabled by the internet) to the point of redefining what a community is. In this book he provides insights with lead to strategies and hints for how to participate and make the best use of social networking. Connecting with purpose, developing filters such as crap detection and working towards a Personal Learning Network (PLN) are offered as ways to not just cope with but to exploit the media to enrich your life and endeavors.The only drawback for me was that Howardʻs writing style is liberally infused with new terminology -much of which seems created "on the fly". On the one hand, this is new territory covering an old topic (communication) so it warrants new terminology to catch the nuances of the change but I just found it slow reading at times and having to re-read sections to fully understand what he is getting at.

I used this book in a social media course I'm teaching this semester. The book is a good introduction to digital media, and I think my students got a lot out of it. There's nothing really revolutionary or original in here, but I don't think that was Rheingold's intention. For someone looking for a less academic, though still well thought out, book on digital media, I recommend this work.Oh, and it helps that Rheingold is a fun writer. He's been doing this for a long time, so it helped my students when he told stories about what it was like in the 70's and 80's. It gave him a lot of credibility and let me historically situate social media within larger historical trends.The one problem I had with the book was the self help tone to it all. Rheingold is big on mindfulness, and it can be a little repetitive. I'm also not 100% sure why we need the term because it seems like a more complicated way to conceptualize "think about what you do".

I used this as a textbook in "Digital Rhetoric, Discourse, and Culture," a university course aimed at juniors and seniors. These students tend to be English majors, mass comm, or education students. I think it fit my students' needs quite well--it's highly readable and contains a great deal of practical advice without getting mired in technical stuff (no coding or advanced software skills are expected or required). It's definitely not what I'd call a scholarly or theoretical text by any means, though Rheingold does mention plenty of scholarship and research along the way. I'd consider it more of a sort of rhetorical manual for social media.Perhaps my favorite part of the book, though, is the way Rheingold's enthusiasm and passion for his topic resonated with me and the students. It's a fun read, and we had no shortage of subjects to talk about in our seminars.My only criticism is the length of the chapters. They really should have been broken up in finer chunks to make it easier for teachers to work them into 50-minute sessions.

For anyone teaching a class in media literacy this book is a must read. The material is well documented and thoughtfully written. Mr. Rheingold is no stranger to the subject in the past having written The Virtual Community and Smart Mobs. He also has taught courses on this subject at Stanford and Cal-Berkeley.The instructor in a general media literacy course would want to use this book as a supplement to other texts in the class because I have not found such texts to even remotely cover the subject of online literacy adequately. Many in academia haven't had the time to explore the social media themselves so this text will provide a wonderful introduction.This text could easily be used as the main text in either an upper level undergraduate course or even a graduate course that explores how people use and should use the Internet in general and social media specifically.
