It's a terrible reminder of something that should never happen between two loving people. I feel like it takes a bold person to purchase a book like this because it seems so much easier to not think about the things that hurt us. I'm just a regular guy, not endorsed by the publisher or amazon, but I can tell you that the best thing you could do for yourself or your marriage is to add this book to your amazon cart and start healing the right way. Realize that your feelings are common and you're not crazy, irrational, or undesireable as you might think.What do you have to lose? The book was under ten dollars, cheap in regards to what I believe it's worth. Be strong enough to seek guidance because you are not alone. Good luck.

Look, most cheaters are inherently selfish. That's the main reason they cheat, for most of them. This book would fool you into believing you can overcome your partner's limitations in this area and have a happy marriage. I say bull! My husband showed me he was selfish before he cheated, I just didn't pay attention. That's my own nieve stupidity. I now know what is behind the saying once a cheater always a cheater, it's the fact that selfish people don't magically change and start behaving altruistically. This book tries to hold YOU the betrayed person partly responsible for your partner's selfish behavior. I disagree with that and it's why I can't give it a full recommendation. The author says, "Are you overreacting to the infidelity?" No way! You cannot overreact to a nuclear bomb that just obliterated your life!The book does do a good job of showing you that you're not alone in your pain, and might be able to explain to your partner why you hurt so bad. But in the end, your partner likely cares more about the fact they are facing consequences rather than the reality that they hurt you. If they cared about hurting you, they wouldn't have cheated in the first place. If your partner has cheated once and you want to work it out, get the book. If they have cheated more than one you probably need to leave. Cheating is abuse. She doesn't come right out and say that but she should. She beats around the bush at it. The most important thing is your own sanity and mental health. Take care of yourself, even if that means leaving.

This is such a great book . It has such detailed information and insight to understanding the whole of the affair. The author gives such a good breakdown for both sides and it has given me validation and clarity to wheat I have been experiencing through the separation. I love how the author gives examples through real client stories and also through research studies and scientific evidence. I'm still very hurt to what the affair has caused in my life and my children's life , but as I read through this book I have hope that I can A) move on and be okay or B) heave the right tools and guidance to rebuild my marriage if my husband is willing to also receive help, reconnect and recommit. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again or for someone who is going through this. It's an outstanding book and easy to understand . If your longing to discover the "why's " and " what ifs " this is a great book to read.

This book has helped me & my marriage counselor gave it rave reviews & said it is one of the best books on the market right now. However, I dont like how unbiased it is. While it makes me understand my husbands feelings & what he did more it also made me feel that the wrongdoer didnt do anything 'wrong' in their section. I skimmed through the wrongdoer sections & didnt absolutely love what it said.

There are "success indicators" that help the wounded partner feel a little safer in knowing what to look for to feel more assured the behavior won't re-occur. There are activities for both partners to go over together to help them explore the "whys" behind the infidelity to fix underlying issues and build a stronger relationship. There's a chapter on how to reunite physically after some healing has taken place.

My wife got the book first and I felt it necessary to read also. Very Informative as the unfaithful person I found this book causing me to look back at my entire life and what made me tick. Where my flaws lie and what I need to correct to either make my current relationship work or if that’s not to be how can I not make the same mistakes in future relationships

The book is not a bashing book but allows (if you are open) each side to see the perspective both partners. It does a good job detailing information and insight to understanding the whole of the affair. My mind was made up to walk away and file for divorce, my husband finally read this book and for the first time in 4 months changed his behavior and began having real conversations about the affair. We are not out of the woods and I'm not sure what will happen but we can at least have conversations that may lead to repairing the marriage. I highly recommend this book for many reasons.

Another recent re-reading of this excellent historical portrait led to this review, but it was also stimulated by another review in which the reader complains of Ms Morris as reflecting a `western perspective'. Given that the Hong Kong of which Jan Morris writes was created by Westerners, from a declining pearl of the East, and that those same creators returned the territory and its teeming millions back to the East in an unprecedented action for a former Empire, a `western perspective' would seem to me to be perfectly valid.Indeed, quoting Frank Ching, a noted Hong Kong author, from his own review of the book in the New York Times (1989); "She approaches the subject of Hong Kong as a student of British imperialism" and notes that she does a superb job.For decades Hong Kong was not only a refuge for `mainland' Chinese but a destination that encourage the growth of a true Chinese middle and educated class that now inherits that `western' imperialistic generated wealth and relative democracy. Our `western' concerns and doubts of this, the first hand-over of free millions to a Communist regime, are not yet stilled and Jan Morris in her excellent book, outlines the historical roots that will eventually confirm the reality of the new `eastern" Hong Kong.

In this book, Jan Morris accounts Hong Kong's past and present concisely. This is a product of Jan Morris' accumulated years of intelligent perception and understanding of Hong Kong's history, culture, politics. Filled with quick-witted humor and details only perceived by someone who had travelled there, this book is entertaining and enlightening to read.

While the book gave me a great history of the former British Colony it was written before the turnover to China. Great review of the power-brokers of Hong Kong, however it left me with a desire to know more about what has transpired since 1997. I suppose the rating I gave Jan Morris' book was due simple to this fact. I hope someone extends on what she has written and bring those of us interested up to date on the new role Hong Kong has in the world and China's dealing with this financial center of the world. It saddens me to think that in 2047 China will probably have destroyed the ambiance of this wonderful city. However, I will not be against Hong Kong people. Going fast now is the Cantonese language that is being replace with Mandarin.

The two guards of good fortune even had names once. In the 19th century, the snarler was called Stephen, and the cross lion was called Stitt in honor of their resemblance to two senior managers at the bank's offices in Hong Kong.This piece of trivia is part of the fun of reading Jan Morris's "Hong Kong: Epilogue to an Empire". As the subtitle suggests, the main focus of the book is on the British influence in Hong Kong. This is particularly evident in the four chapters that deal with selected periods of the history of Hong Kong: (1) the 1840s when Hong Kong was founded on a barren island as the base for British drug trafficking into China, (2) the 1880s when the colony and the British Empire were at the pinnacle of their power, (3) the 1920s when Shanghai began to eclipse the city, and (4) the 1940s when Hong Kong was occupied by the Japanese and later became the refuge for Chinese (many of them entrepreneurs from Shanghai) who fled the Communist revolution in China. The historical chapters are well-researched, and Morris enjoys elaborating on the quirks of the British in Hong Kong. The historical chapters are embedded in five chapters that take a more anecdotal look at the social, cultural, administrative, and economic aspects of life in Hong Kong. The chapter on administration is aptly named "Control Systems". Not surprisingly for Hong Kong, the most extensive and interesting chapter deals with business and the economy. "Means of Support" is a very understated title for this aspect of life in Hong Kong. It would be more fitting to call it "Get rich quick". Jan Morris knows how to sprinkle delightful illustrations of Chinese industriousness and entrepreneurial talent into her tale. With a smirk she revels in the "endless variety of ingenuity, given to the world by such splendid-sounding concerns as "the Grand Dragon Universal Sales Company, the Ever-Rich Industrial Company, or the perhaps unfortunately named Flying Junk Industrial Company Ltd."The book has only two shortcomings. One is the fact that most parts of the book have been written in 1987, and only minor revisions were added in 1997, just before Hong Kong became a Special Administrative Region of China. To understand today's Hong Kong, the epilogue to an empire ought to be appended by a prologue to an uncertain future. The other shortcoming is the effect of Ms. Morris's expatriate perspective on Hong Kong. Her point of view omits many aspects that shape the life of the Chinese who have always been the majority of the city's inhabitants. There is still some truth in William Somerset Maugham's observation in the 1920s: the vast majority of foreign residents has not the slightest notion what is happening among the Chinese masses. About the Author

Eva Ibbotson, born Maria Charlotte Michelle Wiesner, was an Austrian-born British novelist, known for her children's books. Some of her novels for adults have been successfully reissued for the young adult market in recent years. For the historical novel Journey to the River Sea, she won the Smarties Prize in category 9-11 years, garnered unusual commendation as runner up for the Guardian Prize, and made the Carnegie, Whitbread, and Blue Peter shortlists. She was a finalist for the 2010 Guardian Prize at the time of her death. Her last book, The Abominables, was one of eight books on the longlist for the same award in 2012.From the author:Journey to the River Sea was written quite quickly but it spent years and years inside my head. It started with my hearing about this fabled opera house a thousand miles from the mouth of the Amazon and I thought it was one of the strangest things I had ever heard - I meant to go there and see for myself but then I realised it would mean going back into the past because everything is quite different there now. So I went on reading and dreaming and researching and then one day, I picked up my pen to start a new book about witches and ghosts and found I had started to write an adventure storyset in the jungle.

Not just a book for girls. I first purchased the book on tape for a road trip several years ago. My 13 year old daughter read the book a year later. I purchased it again for my youngest son (12 at the time) to read after an assignment on the Amazon. He finished it in one day he loved it that much!My 15 year old son was curious and read it the next day. What a mystery! What an adventure! I'm sure I will purchase it again to give as a gift in the future.

This is the best book I've read in a very long time. It has it all from full characters to beautiful settings to adventure to well everything. I spend a lot of time reading books for youngsters to find gems to send to my grands. I know of five young girls who will receive this soon. It's wonderful!

We were searching for books about the Amazon when we came upon Journey to the River Sea. I'd never heard of Eva Ibbotson and was a bit skeptical. However, we were all extemely engrossed in this story from beginning to end! It is extremely well-written and does provide a great description of the Amazon--the flora, fauna, climate, and people. The characters are so real, you find yourself on a roller coaster of emotions. Some are so likable; others so NOT! This is just a fun book to read; plus you learn a little along the way. In fact, we bought it here after checking it out from the library two or three times. We just had to own it!

OK--so there isn't a missionary anywhere in this book, but it is the type of thing that every person who has ever been on the mission field can relate to...Before Maia leaves England to go to Brazil to live with some long lost relatives, her friends tell her about all the "bad" things she will encounter. The crocs, the piranhas and headhunters, however she does her own research and quickly finds some good to look for and tries to enlighten her friends about how she is not going to the "ends of the earth" but rather a new and exciting country where she will have great adventures.Most of the people that Maia meets in Brazil are typical of those you will meet in a any "foreign" embassy, company, mission agency, etc. You will have those who miss trivial things about their homecountries and will never be happy. You will find those who refuse to have anything to do with the natives and their way of life and thus make both their lives and the ones of those around them miserable. You will have those who reject their native land totally (for various reason) and totally inculturate themselves...and finally you will have those like Maia and her governess who decide to look for both the good and bad, the beautiful and the ugly to make it all "real" but also live a fuller happier life.I am so glad that a friend suggested this book to read and while it made me homesick for the Amazon, it also gave me something that I can share with my daughter about the glories of just "living" rather than simply existing.

I really enjoyed this book. It's quite young and unrealistic, but it's the type of book I would like my hypothetical children to read one day. It teaches you to dream big, to not be scared of new things, that reading essential and that there are good people in the world, but also that the bad ones can be very bad and can't always be changed. The fact that I was in the Amazon last year and experienced a lot of what is in the book also helped.

This book was recommended to me by my 8year old granddaughter who is reading in the international school in Japan.I just loved it and I couldn't put it down. I am 68 years young and thanked my granddaughter for asking me to read this book.

I love the characters even the vile ones. The story is a great adventure story for children & adults. There are wonderful descriptions of the people, wildlife & vegetation of the Amazon. I will read this one again!
