Aaron Hillegass, a former employee at NeXT and Apple, has nearly two decades experience programming and teaching Objective-C, Cocoa, and, more recently, iOS. First things first, I don't actually hate this book. The problem is that it is completely obsolete.There have been so many changes to Xcode and the Swift language since the book was released that it is no longer relevant.You can't even complete the first exercise in the first chapter.I wrote to Big Nerd Ranch and they acknowledged that it is "quite out of date at this point". They have no plans at this time to update the book because there isn't enough interest in it.Unless you are running an old version of OS X (10.9, maybe?) and Xcode 6.3.2, I strongly recommend that you not buy this book.

I am halfway through the book and already I can tell this is going to be my favorite programming book. The guys from Big Nerd Ranch are clearly writing about what they know from a practical standpoint. There is enough deep theory to provide depth but also enough step-by-step to keep you going.I am coming from an iOS programming background so a lot of the material is similar to that, but when you get to bindings prepare yourself for a completely different paradigm.Cannot recommend this book highly enough! Good job guys!

This is a great book for OSX Cocoa development in Swift. It assumes basic knowledge of Swift, which is straightforward for anyone who has worked with an object oriented language like Java or C++, as Apple has a clear and beautifully formatted guide at https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/documentation/Swift/Conceptual/Swift_Programming_Language/TheBasics.html#. Read that first, and you'll be set.The format of this book is modular, with many modules dependent on previous ones. I read it cover to cover, and followed along with the exercises, which can be a little tricky as Swift has changed in many ways from version 1 to 2. Errata are published in a couple of places, with the most robust at https://github.com/bignerdranch/cocoa-programming-for-osx-5e/blob/master/Swift2.md, and is worth perusing as it explains why the changes to code in the text are necessary. Exercises are a central part of the worth of this book, and unless you want to type in every character of every exercise, you'll want to do some cutting and pasting. I read the book on Kindle for Mac, which makes cutting and pasting quite painful, as line ends are stripped and an attribution is inserted with every paste. The better solution is to go to https://github.com/bignerdranch/cocoa-programming-for-osx-5e and to hit the "Download ZIP" button in the upper right hand corner of the page, and you'll have every project in its entirety updated for Swift 2. I even used it to solve an Interface Builder problem that I was having by inspecting the bindings in a project and comparing them to how I had (incorrectly) made them. Finally, although it appears somewhat currently moribund, there's a forum for the book at http://forums.bignerdranch.com/viewforum.php?f=511 with errata, solutions, and some good additional explanations.The greatest strength of this book is the succinct insights that the authors sprinkle throughout the chapters. OSX Cocoa programming isn't just Swift: it's a whole ecosystem, and often I've found myself wondering when coding for Apple devices, "why on earth do they do that?" I have an entirely new appreciation for how this OS works thanks to these authors, and that is incredibly useful in approaching a code problem on this platform.If I had one minor gripe, it's that the authors could have worked in loading and parsing a flat file somewhere. They do file operations a bit in Chapter 35, NSTask, with pipe handling, but nearly every starter book on any system includes file read/write, and for very good reason: it's a very common need. After reading this book and with the resources out there on the web, I'm sure I'll quickly figure it out, but the code the authors include is terse and beautiful, and I would have liked to see how they would do it.All in all, this is easily one of the best how-to programming books that I've read. When I learned Objective C, I read one book on the language and one on the Cocoa ecosystem, and I didn't get half as far as I am now after reading this book. If you've worked with an objected oriented language and you want to learn Cocoa for OSX with Swift, read the guide on the Apple website to learn the language--it will take 2 hours, tops--and then read this book and do the exercises. You're in for a treat.

My reason for this low review is that the book is severely outdated. Since Apple has a habit of making frantic changes to Swift and xCode, the exercises and examples will often suffer roadblocks that, while not impossible to overcome, definitely take the fun out of learning. I'm running Swift 3.0 and xCode 8.2 and until Big Nerd Ranch updates this volume I'm going to stick to Objective C, which has fewer features that Swift, but is much easier to use.The text information provided is useful though, especially considering Cocoa's convolutions, but not exceptional. Unfortunately there aren't a lot of alternatives at present so proceed at your own risk.

There's a dearth of OS X Cocoa Swift books on the market so it's nice to come across one. Unfortunately, this one is out of date. It really needs to be updated to the latest version of Swift. I also get the impression that the authors do not like change. One example is the use of Storyboards. They are not used until Chapter 32. This is disturbing if you're coming from iOS or have taken the Stanford Swift on-line class. Clearly Apple is pushing developers to use them. There is some good information in this book I'm happy to have it in my library. I just wish it was more up to date.

This is a great book for learning swift and cocoa app programming. I am kind of a novice but still find it helpful. The Big Nerd Ranch released a update to the book for swift 2 and xcode 7 which is great but the current version of swift is 3 and xcode is now on 8. Sometimes the code changes between the book and current revisions of swift and xcode are enough to make it hard to learn. There is a forum that BNR offers for all of there books and you can go and ask questions if you get stuck. If they put out a swift 3 xcode 8 revision I would buy it.

Another excellent book from the Big Nerd Ranch.I've been waiting for some sort of introduction to Swift, and while this is not exactly it, it covers other OS X topics, such as binding, more clearly than previously (or perhaps my skills are just improving, albeit at a glacial rate). The author doesn't just churn out a bunch of recipes as many other books do - you have to earn your crust here. This means that there's a good chance you will make mistakes as you follow along. This is good. The mistakes are the tools that enable learning.There is also an excellent forum supporting the book which provides further teaching opportunities.

I couldn’t give this book anything but 5 stars. It was written with too much pain and way too much loss. This should be mandatory reading for every human being. We must never forget the damage that mans inhumanity to man can do.

A great and powerfully moving book. This edition includes Wiesel's speech after receiving the Nobel peace prize and other talks related to that event. The book also deals with the important topic of denial, which is becoming more and more of a problem as survivors die off and more and more people try to deny that the Holocaust ever happened.

I absolutely love every single one of these guides by Wallpaper*. They are directed towards people more into art, design, and the more trendy locations in each city, but if that is what interests you, you will love them. They always recommend places where locals might check out and are not huge tourist traps. The restaurant and bar recommendations are always spot on!

Although small and easy to carry about, these Wallpaper editions (I also bought one for Madrid) are filled with beautiful photos, mostly of hotels, eateries and shops a person on a budget would not visit. The first few pages were great, as they spoke of Seville's highlights (the cathedral, Alcazar), but much of the book is dedicated to upscale places.

Needs updating

Hi am a personal assistant and book high-end luxury travel for my employer. These books are excellent to find top-notch, boutique hotels, fabulous restaurants, and non-touristy destinations. I purchased Madrid, Barcelona and Seville and they are all great.

I thought it flowed effortlessly for the subject matter. It's not an easy book to read for the average person who is not familiar with the truth and heartache of those involved in the topic. I think the author was able to more than adequately able to describe the true nature of the drug trade starting south of our border and carrying over to our citizens. He was born and has lived in one of the most vulnerable communities in our country, and has gained insight from his elected positions, so he is uniquely qualified to write this book. If you want to gain an understanding that might help us to better deal with problems or issues we have today, I highly recommend the book. I am only giving it four stars because once the book was published some changes might have occurred.

A very persuasive argument for legalizing, taxing, and regulating marijuana by a responsible legislator who is obviously not a drugee but who has researched the economics behind the cartels which fuel violent crime. A good analogy to alcohol prohibition is also shown.

Interesting to get an inside look at Beto and what he believes.

But it still has problems with "that" vs "which", "since" vs "because", commas where they don't belong, no commas where they do belong, and misuse of parenthesis and em dashes.However, this is typical from most writers, editors, and publishers (who employ both).Here are some examples of poor analysis:The table on pg. 108 shows this:Pot Value = $19B Weight = 3300 tons V/W = $5K/ton Cost: $23/lb = $23(3300)(2000) = $0.152B Profit: $19B - $0.15B = $18.85BCocain Value = $30B Weight = 207 tons V/W = $145K/ton Cost: $4000/lb = $4000(207)(2000) = $0.1656B Profit: $30B - $0.16B = $29.8BHeroin Value = $20B Weight = 44 tons V/W = $450K/tonLater, the author indicates the costs of each. So I added that above.It's pretty easy to tell which is most profitable: It's easier to move 44 tons of heroin and make $20B ($450K/ton) than to move 3300 tons of pot and make nearly the same ($19B) at $5K/ton. So Heroin is #1, Cocaine #2, and Pot #3.On pg. 31, she says that Nieto was found with 1900 lbs of pot, enough for 4000 hits and 2 million joints. But that just doesn't "add up." That implies that each joint has 1900 lbs(16 oz/lg)(28 grams/oz)/2,000,000 joints = 0.426g = 426 mg. But a joint typically has 1000 mg of pot + 200 mg of paper. So she should have said 1900(16)(28)/1000 = 851 joints. And she implies that one hit = 1900(16)(28)/4000 = 213g. But a typical "hit" ranges from about 60-100 mg. No way, Jose.Pg. 37 says that the Chicago Police values the street value of 1900 lbs of pot at over $5 million. So $5,000,000/1900(16)(28)$5.87/gram? Maybe in Juarez. But in Chicago, I'll bet it sells for $10/g, or $10 million.Pg. 43 says that the cartels can buy a pound of pot for $23 and sell it in Chicago for $550/lb. So that's $550/(16(28)g = $1.22/g. No way again, Jose. It sells for $5-$10/g. And their profit is not related to the retail price. They can buy a pound of cocain for $4,000. So if their revenue for cocain = $30B for 207 tons, then their cost is $4000(207)(2000) = $0.1656B. So profit = $30B - $01656B = $29.8B. For pot, it's $23(2000)(1900) = $87.4 million. So profit = $19B - $0.0874B = $18.9B. So that does make cocain the most profitable.On pg. 57, she says that the US Govt estimates that 5600 hectares was cultivated in 2005 and 17,500 hectares in 2009. Yet the chart on pg. 56 shows that they eradicated 30,000 hectares in 2005. How can they eradicate more than was cultivated?Overall, it succeeds in showing the futility of the drug war and proposes to legalize them. I agree.

I have been backpacking, hiking, and climbing since I was little, and I am amazed at how much I have learned from this book about subjects I thought I had already mastered. This is the perfect resource for those looking to go from climbing fourteeners on Class Two routes to fall and winter climbs, couloir ascents, vertical faces, and taller glaciated mountains.To be honest, certain areas touched upon in this book are more thoroughly covered by other sources. The segment on avalanches is far from comprehensive, for instance, but the book admits very openly when further information is required, and points the reader in the right direction about where to learn more. However, certain users will not find this book very useful because of its focus on attaining summits. If you are looking for a book on hiking and backpacking, the first one hundred pages will be extremely valuable, but the remainder will be too summit-focused and too climbing-centric to be of much use. For those looking for info on skiing, this book has some interesting observations, but largely avoids the subject. To these people, I would recomend they look for more specialized books in their particular subjects until they gain an interest in bagging peaks.For anybody whatsoever looking to start climbing summits above treeline, performing vertical climbs of any difficulty, reviewing old materials, or looking at improving skills or developing new ones for climbing, this book is absolutely required. I'm a newer climber who is also an aspiring trad climber and alpinist so while my opinion doesn't carry much weight, this book has been a fantastic reference for a beginner. I've read it cover to cover and then routinely re-read various chapters and sections. I take courses through professional guides but always pre-read/re-read applicable sections of this book before practicing skills with a guide. While this book does mention sport climbing, it is clearly focused on alpine-style mountaineering (trad rock climbing, ice climbing, snow/glacier travel, etc.) but many skills discussed are applicable to sport climbing.

This is the one stop shop for everything you’d need to know about mountaineering. There is something for everyone to learn in here.One note, if you are looking for a relatively quick reference guide to certain mountaineering or alpine climbing information, this is not it. This is over 600 pages of comprehensive information on everything. Not something that you’d bring into the field.

This book is extremely comprehensive and gives you more than enough detail to get up into the mountains- SAFELY. I had the idea to start climbing and was recommended this book as a way to get versed in safely climbing mountains. I read this book cover to cover and marked it up with notes and pens. Now it sits as a trusted companion on my coffee table in case I ever need my mountain fix. Even though it is written as a text-book style publication, it is entertaining and has plenty of pictorials to help you understand every aspect of what you are getting yourself into. After reading the book I took a class and have been hooked ever since.The only thing I wish was different was the portability of the book. This book is HUGE! So much info, in fact more info than most people probably need, which is great. Covers everything you could think of for any sort of camping, hiking, and mountaineering. Great price for something that would cost $150 as a college text book. haha!I've developed my own methods of mountaineering over the years and do fine solo, but I wanted a book that shows the more standardized methods so that I can work and communicate well with other people who might be joining me. This book really does a great job of showing those methods and explaining why they are done in such a way.
