These generic components bring their users the well-known benefits of libraries, but in the broader space of system architecture. The coding techniques and the implementations provided focus on tasks and issues that traditionally fall in the area of design, activities usually done before coding. Because of their high level, generic components make it possible to map intricate architectures to code in unusually expressive, terse, and easy-to-maintain ways. Three elements are reunited here: design patterns, generic programming, and C++. These elements are combined to achieve a very high rate of reuse, both horizontally and vertically. Instead, you will find the fundamental components that make it easy to implement all of the above, and much more. C++ has the breadth necessary to make this possible. Its underlying C memory model ensures raw performance, its support for polymorphism enables object-oriented techniques, and its templates unleash an incredible code generation machine. Templates pervade all the code in the book because they allow close cooperation between the user and the library. The user of the library literally controls he way code is generated, in ways constrained by the library. The role of a generic component library is to allow user-specified types and behaviors to be combined with generic components in a sound design. Because of the static nature of the technique used, errors in mixing and matching the appropriate pieces are usually caught during compile time. This books manifest intent is to create generic componentspreimplemented pieces of design whose main characteristics are flexibility, versatility, and ease of use. Generic components do not form a framework. Loki is the god of wit and mischief in Norse mythology, and the authors hope is that the librarys originality and flexibility will remind readers of the playful Norse god. All the elements of the library live in the namespace Loki. The namespace is not mentioned in the coding examples because it would have unnecessarily increased indentation and the size of the examples. Loki is freely available; you can download it from awl/cseng/titles/0-201-70431-5. Except for its threading part, Loki is written exclusively in standard C++. This, alas, means that many current compilers cannot cope with parts of it. I implemented and tested Loki using Metrowerks CodeWarrior Pro 6.0 and Comeau C++ 4.2.38, both on Windows. It is likely that KAI C++ wouldnt have any problem with the code, either. As vendors release new, better compiler versions, you will be able to exploit everything Loki has to offer. Lokis code and the code samples presented throughout the book use a popular coding standard originated by Herb Sutter. Im sure you will pick it up easily. The material presented in this book is mainly for library writers and senior developers who are in charge of software design. Having said that, the material here is unlike you'll find in any other book. Author discusses design and implementation of reusable components like a (very sophisticated) singleton, visitor, generalized functors, smart pointers, etc. I found discussions on smart pointers and singleton to be particularly enlightening. Its amazing how a simple design pattern like singleton could have so many intricacies.But the chapter which blew me away was that of typelists, and what author achieves by using simple metaprogramming constructs (although I would be the first one to admit that a mere mortal software developer like myself would not be using typelists everyday, but its still fun to learn about them).This book is very different from whatever material I had read earlier on C++. Do read this book once you are familiar with topics like templates, common design patterns and smart pointers.

This was quite fantastic. However it is dated because his concepts got rolled into C++ 11, 14, 17.

Never has a professional/technical book made such an impact on me.I've had this book for many years,but decided to write this review only now because after so many years the pearls of this beautiful masterpiece are unfolding to me. If I love C++ it is because of Andrei Alexandrescu and his amazing book. I only wish that he would write some more books like this. If you find this book to be scary at first and hard to understand, I would like to encourage you to keep on reading and trying. You'll get it eventually and once you do, there is no way back :)

I remember reading this book for the first time about 7 yeas ago and feeling my head turn inside out. Upon re-reading it recently I found it exciting and very understandable. The techniques outlined in this book solve problems that no other techniques can resolve. I find it amazing what can be done with classes and functions that never even get constructed.Definitely gives a good coverage for all aspects of Meta Programming I think one of the measures of respect by which this book is regarded is how many of these pioneering techniques have made It into the Boost library.Thoroughly recommended for the intermediate to advanced programmer to have in his library. Even if you don't use C++.

Many years ago, I began to feel that the power of templates in C++ has not been fully exploited. In more recent years, the emergence of the STL has shown that templates can be used to great advantage for containers, allowing conceptually simple generic implementations to be reused in a wide variety of situations, with no run-time penalty. This advance only increased my sense that we haven't yet seen the full power of templates.Alexandrescue's remarkable work is, in my view, the most original and important advance in C++ since the STL. It has been an article of faith in the design patterns community that one can't implement a reusable design patterns library in any language, because each pattern has dozens of important variations, and an unlimited number of custom variations, all seemingly interdependent. Alexandrescue's work seriously challenges this assumption. He uses "policy classes" (explained in Chapter 1) together with many innovative template techniques to pull apart these interdependencies. The heart of the book describes in detail how he developed the "Loki" library containing many gang-of-four design pattern implementations. Loki's SmartPtr, one of the high points of the book, puts to shame the Standard C++ auto_ptr, which has been the state of the art until now.Even before Alexandrescue's work, templates provided C++ programmers with major advantages not available in "more modern" object-oriented languages such as Java and C#. Alexandrescue multiplies the existing advantages many times, facilitating dramatic increases in C++ programming productivity and quality. Isn't that what high-level language programming is all about?The only negative comment I have is not really a criticism of Alexandrescue's work, but of the deplorable state of C++ compiler implementations. Because many C++ compilers, especially the most popular ones, still do not fully support Standard C++, many of Alexandrescue's techniques cannot yet be used in many practical situations. I would like to think that the importance of supporting Alexandrescue's library will motivate compiler vendors to make the necessary, and long-overdue upgrades.

I give this two stars because it is recommended for those studying for the PHR exam...but if you buy this book AND the Reed/Bogardus certification study guide, you are really wasting your money. This book is just the study guide, but shorter and more vague. They literally lift passages from one book to the next. If you aren't studying and you want a general knowledge guide...you should STILL not buy this book. Just get the certification guide instead, it has much more detail. I'm kind of annoyed that I bought both of these.

Great book for human resource professionals - I bought this book as a resource as I prepare to take the SPHR exam. It is an excellent resource, easy to read and understand.

One of the best tools for studying for a PHR SPHR exam. The material covered is also appliacble for the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP.

This was an outstanding book to read and study in preparation of the SHRM-CP exam. It covers everything - all of the topics you need to know for the exam. Especially critical are the appendixes and the glossary of terms, as well as the reference guide in the very back of the book. Mostly everything in the SHRM-CP exam are in this book. Read it, highlight it, and memorize the information as you will definitely be questioned on it! Pay special attention to the somewhat obscure passages as I was surprised how much of that was in the actual exam. This book, and the 1000 question book by Olamide Asekun, as well as the "SHRM-CP Exam SECRETS Study Guide", were the three things I used to sucessfully pass the SHRM-CP exam the first time! Good Luck and study hard!

Use multiple sources to study from. I find this book helpful in defining what HR means now compared to past HR theories

For something that calls itself a guide to a profession's "body of knowledge," it doesn't seem as informative or professional as it should have been. The information in here is a bit vague. They definitely should have used an editor/proofreader.

This book is the explanation for those who do not understand that the HRCI test has historically been competency base and became even more so with the latest re-weighting of the various domains. While marketed as a guide to the HRCI BOK, with several appendices, it is also a primer on HR as a part of (rather than apart from) the business.

Let me preface this by saying, I passed on my first try for the PHR; this guide was a great comprehensive summary for studying. I used this, flashcards, and as many web based tutorials I could find. This is not a test that you can cram for the night before and pass.

There was a meeting in 1963 between Robert F. Kennedy and James Baldwin and a few of Baldwin’s friends. When you think of an example of speaking truth to power, that meeting as described by Dyson here, will indeed standout as definitive.Dyson writes “I heard over the years how explosive it was, how it brought together other folk I had admired, including Harry Belafonte. The gathering pitted an earnest if defensive white liberal against a raging phalanx of thinkers, activists, and entertainers who were out for blood. I’ve always wanted to read a book about that historic moment, and more important, about its meaning for us today as we struggle with many of the same issues America confronted 50 years ago.”Dyson has not written that book, but this one has enough details about that meeting to give a clear picture about what took place. He manages to put the reader in that room while brilliantly filling out the book with looks at the various communities represented. There are chapters on the Artists, Activists, Intellectuals and the Politicians. And Dyson doesn’t just lock into 1963, he brings the discussion current because....”racial and political truths that we still confront today.”So while that very important and volatile meeting sets the foundation for the book, the actions or inactions of our current community leaders-not in the geographical sense, but community in the sense of interest groups, i.e. Artists, Politicians, etc.-are the brick and mortar that makes this a must read. The melding of the historical with current day concerns and challenges qualifies this work as one of Dyson’s best.Dyson’s prose and criticism is as always, electric and sharp, “the enshrinement of ignorance as the basis of power and authority, is the personification of white supremacy and white arrogance.” The indictment of white supremacy while encouraging Whites to wake up and recognize is a continued effort from his most previous work, Tears We Cannot Stop. As evidenced by the subtitle here, Dyson is of the belief that the historic meeting in 1963 was an important conversation about race that no doubt needs be to continued and expanded because it remains unfinished. I read Michael Eric Dyson to be challenged and to get a different view of life in America, and this book does that. At times it is a challenge toread his brutally honest opinions of life in the USA this long after the end of the Civil War, reconstruction, and the Civil Rights movement, butif we ever hope to heal the deep wounds of slavery we have to face the hard truths, and Mr. Dyson certainly is not afraid of hard truth.

I cannot honestly claim that I have found all the works of Dr, Dyson exceptional. I have sometimes found myself disagreeing with something written or questioning something written or squinting one eye tightly and saying to myself, " I don't really think so". However, in "What Sounds Like Truth" (see book underlining), I find Dr. Dyson to be the voice of a rhythmic brilliance composed of preacher, intellectual, and brother across the kitchen table who valiantly attempts to slay those dark, white phantoms of hatred, of fear, of ignorance while giving voice those of us with suffering from the ambiguity of lexical failure.When Dyson, rather early in the book writes, ". . .all that made sense no longer held in place, and it appeared that the cosmos had gotten drunk. . .teetered off course and hurdled madly into oblivion", it echoes precisely how I felt hearing the news of Dr. King's assassination. That feeling was mine, and once again my eyes became misty.What Dr. Dyson says, once again, is hear me, see me. And one man, Robert Kennedy, among many, finally did which enabled him to speak truth, and thus, prevented one city engaging in the fury that erupted across the country upon hearing of King's assassination. What Kennedy did was, "Listen and listen and listen".

Michael Eric Dyson amplifies the need to address the systemic racism with in the United States. He allows the reader to be in the room where the conversation with some of the leading black activists and RFK took place. He addresses the leftovers of racial bigotry that starve this nation of its notion of being "one nation under God." It is a must read for those who fight for justice, but more importantly, it is a handbook for those who just do not understand the perpetual angst of black fook.

The author is an absolutely wonderful speaker. I bought the book seeking more of his piercing insight into the difference between reality in America and the national narrative. But this book just wanders all over the place. It begins with a discussion of the relationship between James Baldwin and Robert Kennedy, and a famous meeting he held with some black leaders. That was interesting and revealing. From there he just jumps around discussing various pop culture people and some of the things they have said or done in the way of black activism. It's relatively interesting, like a literary, socially-aware Entertainment Tonight. But if I would have known how scattered and disorganized the book is I would not have bought it. I don't mind that I read it but have other things I would have rather read, like re-reading The Autobiography of Malcolm X.

Loved this book. It is so informative and enlightening. To say MED is prolific is a major understatement. I highly recommend this masterpiece. Buy and read this book.

The book details the critical engagement between key African American figures and Robert Kennedy in which those figures told Kennedy the truth in love about race relations that forced Rober Kennedy to have the coursage to confront his mental models concerning race relations. Kenedy's character was strong enough to face the reality with courage and then to take leadership in advancing civil rights in the years before he was murdered.Professor Dyson continues his significant contribution to our civic discurse and understanding in this book! I really enjoyed reading this book. I would describe it as an introductory to camping guide. The author has a great writing style. I felt like I was almost having a conversation with them. I consider myself a seasoned camper, but this book had a lot of great ideas. Most importantly, this book describes why we camp. I am inspired to get the family out and camp ASAP!

Great read! Good tips on tent selection, meal time prep, and cold weather readiness all things as a entry level camper that I am not always adequately prepared during my trips. My family and I take a few trips during the year and often over pack or under pack always forgetting the tools needed to be prepared. The cold weather section was very helpful. Thank you Montie
