About the Author
James Bonta served as Director of Corrections Research at Public Safety Canada from 1990 until 2015. He received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Ottawa in 1979. Bonta was a psychologist, and later Chief Psychologist, at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre, a maximum-security remand facility for adults and young offenders. Throughout his career, Bonta has held various academic appointments and professional posts and was a member of the Editorial Advisory Boards for the Canadian Journal of Criminology and Criminal Justice and Behavior. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Psychological Association, a recipient of the Association’s Criminal Justice Section’s Career Contribution Award for 2009, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, 2012, the Maud Booth Correctional Services Award, 2015, and the 2015 Community Corrections Award from the International Corrections and Prisons Association. The late D.A. Andrews was a noted criminologist affiliated with Carleton University throughout his academic career. His work on the psychology of criminal conduct produced what became known as the "theory of correctional intervention," which set the standard for successful intervention practices throughout the field of corrections worldwide. He was a founding member of Carleton’s Criminology and Criminal Justice Program and a Fellow of the Canadian Psychological Association. He received numerous awards for his work in the criminal justice field, including those from the American Probation and Parole Association, Correctional Service Canada, the International Community Corrections Association, and the American Society of Criminology. After his retirement, he remained active in the criminal justice field as a Professor Emeritus and Distinguished Research Professor.

This is THE book for thinking about crime and responses to it. All should read it, and all who do will benefit from the contents. The authors are distinguished in every respect. The writing is clear, and the breadth of research considered is mozzafiato.But time and scholarship are never static, and now the time is ripe for at least four new elements -1) Core issue simplification. The model has expanded to so many elements of offender characteristics, situation characteristics, staff characteristics, and agency characteristics that full implementation of the ideas even as they are currently understood would be impossible. The emphasis on the Central Eight is a step in the right direction, but further weeding is needed, and more needs to be done to distill crucial elements in the areas addressed for the non-researcher who would seek both practicality and program integrity.2) Clearer ideas. More critical examination of the concepts underlying some of the ideas in the book. Psychopathy has been addressed with profit in "The Myth of the Born Criminal" by Jalava et al, but more work needs to be done on the topic, and there other ideas of justice, rehabilitation, "ethicality" and "actuarial approaches" as they apply to deprivation of liberty that need to be examined much deeper and in considerably more detail.2) New ideas. Expansion of the research concepts to include ideas from other disciplines. Significant advances have been made in moral psychology (see Walter Sinnot-Armstrong and work by individuals in the Society for Philosophy and Psychology, for example) neuroscience (per popularizers A, Damasio, J. Arden), child development, and other disciplines that could add texture to the humanity of the serious social and family issues at stake and better inform the research addressed in this volume.4) Essential innovations. Less defense of the model per se and more acknowledgement that, while significant and important implementation problems remain, and certainly all of us would benefit if progress in implementation was made, most of the ideas here are 30 years old and largely intellectually exhausted. At best, improvements in the criminals, victims and for society in general, under the best intentions, with the best reasonably-expected staff training and skill (as demonstrated by the minimal improvements in these areas for a quarter century), and “program integrity†are still marginal. Innovation is desperately needed to save lives and improve public safety.This was and is a monumental work of scholarship. The model has stood successfully against the conventional wisdom for many decades. It is uniquely creative in its origins, and the integration of the ideas found in the book has created a model that is a testament to the brilliance and imagination of the authors. But ideas are more often written dynamicall in sand than inscribed statically in concrete, and after nearly thirty years, moving to the next model or models that incorporate more conceptual clarity, expanded ideas, and functional innovation are a must.
I ordered this for school and although it was a super dry read, it was relevant and helpful for my class. It does not break my heart that I don't need to read it again.
