The Carb Addicts Diet really works for me. This diet may not be for everyone, and it's old school now, but lots of good info. Wish the Heller's were still active in this field. Their research and explanations on how body chemistry works, and how to use behavioral science to lose weight is such a gift to people with carb addictions.
The first book I bought by Dr. Rachel Heller and her husband was The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet. I loved it so much I also bought this one. Dr. Heller really knows what she's talking about when it comes to carb addiction. Before beginning a low carb way of life, all I thought about was eating and especially sweets. I was getting fatter and fatter! I started following the tips in the Hellers' books and I now have it under control. It feels SO good not to be thinking about eating all day long or feeling like my food doesn't satisfy me. I highly recommend the carb addict series of books by Dr. Heller and her husband.
This eating plan works for me. It is not the easiest to implement, but once you are used to thinking in terms of avoiding insulin spikes, it gets easier, so hand in there. I started this type of eating about 1990 and it has helped me keep my weight under control without starving. I ordered two books that are updates on the Original Carbohydrate Addicts Diet to see if there are any tweeks that will help me. When I have finished going through both of them, I will update my reviews
This book changed my life!! Finally I understand what my body's been trying to tell me my entire adult life!! I have always LOVED carbs and had difficulty controlling myself when eating them. Since beginning this program 3 weeks ago, the cravings have disappeared, but I'm not lying, it's still work.Since hitting 50, I have gradually been putting on weight, and I've never had a weight problem. I've read many books trying to figure out what's been happening, now I know.
This is an awesome book if you. Have had trouble losing weight with regular diets, or are addicted to carbs and sweets. The authors plain exactly how insulin works in the body and what its role is in turning sugars and starches into body fat.I ordered a copy of this book for my son, and also for my sister-in-law, who both have trouble with carbs, just like I do.
"Does weight- and keeping it off- get harder each passing year?"This is one of the many questions posed, and answered by Dr. Richard F.Heller and Dr. Rachel F.Heller in this guide to more sensible eating, maintaining weight loss and better health. The writing is clear. The book includes recipes to lead the reader to wiser choices. Page 122-123 offers a "quick at- a- glance" list of carbohydrate-rich foods for those readers on the run with little time to fully digest the book. Can I give up chocolate? No, I can't, but I can easily apply some of the other alternatives offered.The authors include the following quote in their chapter on "Options for Life": "Choose which seems best and , in the doing, it will become agreeable and easy." -- Pythagoras circa 550 b.c. We tried the "Shrimp with Herb Sauce" on pg 319, and actually liked it. This is a weight-watcher's alternative. Worth Reading!
Don't think of it as a diet - it's a whole new approach to eating and nutrition.Now that we know - or should know - that the so-called low fat diets have a tendancy to actually make people fatter (but not always - depends on your body!), the low-carb diet is finally, after 25 or more years, being taken seriously. A friend of mine tried many diets over the years, and this is the one that has allowed her to lose weight, and keep it off, and reduce her desire to eat. I went on this diet, have lost 25 pounds in 6 months, and now I, too, have no desire to snack during the day like I used to, I eat less at meals, and I feel just as full as I ever did before. I feel better, too. I grew up with a regular Wisconsin-style diet of starch, starch, starch, and sugar sugar sugar (lots of bread, potatoes, root vegetables, and my mother was an incredible baker, so lots of cinnamon rolls, cookies, cakes, pies...yum!, but not good for me) - and even though I ate that diet for 36 years, I have just about no desire to go back to it - not a "gosh, it made me heavy, so I don't want it" desire, but my body *itself* doesn't want all that stuff any more, and I don't even think of eating that stuff any more, except as an occasional treat.IGNORE ANY REVIEWS you read here that give this diet low scores. The truth of the matter is, this diet is not for everyone. With diabetes in my family, and doing some serious thought about my past food habits and reactions after eating, etc., I gave it a try since it seemed to fit what was happening to me. Thankfully, I was right, and this is for me. There's always a chance that your body IS NOT the type that will deal with diet, and you might very well NOT get any weight loss from this. If so, chalk it up to God's infinite variety of body types, and don't blame the diet. The people who rate this low, for the most part, are people for whom this diet did not work (or they didn't do it properly). And remember, don't think of it as a diet - it's a whole new approach to eating and nutrition.For me, and for many others, this is the new approach to thinking about nutrition and how we feed our bodies we needed.
