About the Author
Since his childhood, Jim Hinckley dreamed of being an author. After numerous detours into truck driving, mining, ranching, and a variety of other endeavors, he turned to writing a weekly column on automotive history for his local newspaper, the Kingman Daily Miner, in his adopted hometown of Kingman, Arizona.From that initial endeavor more than twenty years ago, Hinckley has written extensively on his two primary passions: automotive history and travel. He is a regular contributor to Route 66, American Road, Hemmings Classic Car, and Old Cars Weekly, and he was an associate editor at Cars & Parts. I was hesitating whether to add this book to my growing collection of Route 66 books, especially as it is not exactly cheap. In addition, the term "Atlas" nowaday applies to great variety of books and I wasn't sure what I was going to receive. In the end, I decided to get it and I am really glad I did. The book covers an amazing amount of ground. For each state you will find sections on the Pre-1926 Historic Sites, Landmarks, Parks, Military, Crime and Disaster, Film and Celebrity, Transitional Sites, as well as maps and many photographs, some in color and some in black and white. This is a book for Route 66 buffs. It is hard to put down (and to pick up since it is quite hefty), and it is easy to get lost in reading the diverse history of the Mother Road. This may not be a book that you will take along with you on your trip because of the weight, but it will certainly make the preparations much more interesting. I do not regret my purchase in the least, and nor will you. The hardcover binding is very good and looks like it will last a long time. Recommended.
We are planning a trip next year to drive the length of Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica. This offered a lot of insight.

Was a Christmas gift, I was told that he enjoyed this book tremendously as he part of the Route 66 on a Motorcycle with a large group of friends and tour group and was a trip of a lifetime.
Very ndetailed atlas, nicely illustrated, with many historical details. A definite plus for anyone researching Route 66 or wanting not to miss anything as they take a trip along it.
I bought this to assist me with planning a road trip this Spring and am finding the information this book contains to be very valuable in this endeavor. Easy to use. Very helpful information and pictures. State-by-state lay-out makes this very easy to use to refer to. Great purchase for those intending same usage or if just interested in what’s been, or still is, along this roadway.
Growing up in a town which the Mother Road went through, I was able to learn many historical facts of which I was not aware. Fun photos and great history.
