While a graduate student in American studies at Harvard, Levine spent a year living as a "participant observer" in the Lubavitcher community in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, entering with the following assumption: "The possibility that these girls' lives could be anything other than the Platonic essence of feminine subjugation seemed as unlikely as a suckling pig on a Shabbos table." What she found instead is that Lubavitch culture nurtures most girls' inner and outer voices. Though they are not immune from adolescent concerns about fashion, weight, looks and cliques, the Lubavitch emphasis on each person's godly mission to bring the Messiah deepens their spiritual outlook; the single-sex environment in which they mature helps develop vibrant, expressive personalities. Those who clash with Orthodox strictures, however, experience intense and painful struggles. From interviews with 32 girls ages 13 to 23, Levine found "downright juicy" material and culled seven portraits of girls (disguised in name and background) in their "idiosyncratic splendor." The essays are sometimes repetitive within the context of the entire book, as if Levine wrote each to stand on its own, but her bright, lively narrative compensates. Levine invites readers to share the "pure delight" of knowing these girls, and challenges us to draw on Hasidism as an unexpected source in helping our own girls develop into secure, confident adults. Stephanie Wellen Levine's Mystics, Mavericks, and Merrymakers about teenage Lubavitcher girls. Levine lived in the Crown Heights, Brooklyn area for a year doing the research, which was academic, but the book succeeds and reaches far beyond its substantial academic roots. Anyone who has ever lived in Brooklyn knows the Lubavitcher Hasidic sect--claimed to be the largest Jewish organization in the world. They are the group that does outreach to other Jews, trying to bring the Messiah through an accumulation of good deeds done by Jews, such as lighting candles on Shabbos. They used to drive a truck called the Mitzvah tank around New York City, blasting music and inviting participation in their practice to anyone Jewish. Today, they are famous for their welcoming Chabad houses all over the world (and the brutal terrorist attack on one of these in Mumbai in November, 2008). Their outreach is unusual, as Jews, unlike Christians, don't generally give a high value to proselytizing. Even a staid, mainstream Protestant church like the one I grew up in had an ideal of going out into the world and witnessing and converting, even though we didn't do it much--everyone in town was pretty much already affiliated with one church or another. I have always been fascinated by people whose belief is strong enough that they feel privileged to grab people by the lapel and try to convert them. I am also fascinated by closed systems, whether religious or political, that have all the answers. It seems wonderfully comforting to me-- and also stunningly wrong-headed. The Lubavitchers are one of these groups with a complete, self-referential system and all the answers. They also prove to be, in Levine's book, a varied, warm, intelligent, supportive and enthusiastic community. They welcomed Levine into their homes, confided to her about their lives, and seemed genuinely puzzled and hurt that in the end she returned to her secular life in academia instead of joining them. The book is organized around representative individual girls who range from those who are deeply enriched by the mystical teachings of Chabad--indeed uplifted, glowing with delight at the insights their study and meditation give them-- to some serious rebels who drink, socialize with men (and Lubavitchers keep high walls between the sexes) and eventually leave Crown Heights, albeit with sadness over the loss of their warm and nurturing community. One of Levine's fascinating and perhaps broadly applicable insights is how strong and lively the girls are in their largely single sex lives: they make deep friendships, tease their teachers and disrupt their classrooms, delight in clothes and parties-- and then switch quickly to religious studies and rituals. All of them are expected, of course, to marry early and produce many Jewish babies. The complexities of these lives-- the success and the failures-- make up the texture of this wonderful book. I'm so happy Stephanie Levine has told us about her year with the mystics, mavericks, and merrymakers.

This was such a wonderful eye-opening book about the variety of girls in the Lubavitch community in Crown Heights. This book breaks the stereotype that says that girls from very religious families become "drone-like" or don't have their individuality. Within their very prescribed world, because of the teachings and influence of the rebbe, there are countless opportunities for personal exploration and expression. It was inspiring to me as a mother of a girl as well; I want my daughter to have some of the passion and commitment displayed in these pages!

The book has been covered, it was quite good, though best as an introduction for people totally unfamiliar with the culture.Particular to the Kindle Edition - no page numbers, and indexing is not linked. It's a book you might want to go back to using the index, and the index just has a list of subjects with no page or location number, or link back. This little book is exactly what I've been wishing for! For several years, I've been a fan of Blake Snyder's _Save the Cat_ and his "beat sheet." However, StC was written for screenwriters, and some of its beats don't easily translate to novels. In this book, Gwen Hayes lays out a four-act structure and a fresh set of story beats that are specific to the romance genre. The book is concise, engaging, and useful for any subgenre. I appreciated that Hayes doesn't tailor her advice to market trends, or make assumptions about gender, sexuality, or heat level. Romance is romance. This book isn't concerned with chiseled abs or stormy eyes*; it's about the bones of writing a compelling relationship.I know I'll be keeping this one on my shelf and recommending it often.*Not that there's anything wrong with chiseled abs or stormy eyes. Big fan of both.

This was incredibly helpful for me, an author who sometimes struggles with plot, and really struggles with much conventional wisdom about it (the phrase "character arc" makes me break out in hives). Gwen Hayes has a system that makes far more sense to me, while allowing for greater creativity. This is a short book, but I loved that about it. I don't have time to spend an entire week or two reading a book about craft. I'm better off reading this (which took me about an hour, and I'm not the fastest reader) and then putting concepts into practice. This book is also concise--Gwen does not opine about her talents and supreme wisdom, she shares it simply and quickly. I'm so appreciative of that. I started writing a new book this week and I plan to use Gwen's "beats" as she calls them, just to make sure I'm hitting every note I need to hit, rather than asking myself in revisions, "Oh, shoot. Did I forget to redeem the hero?" I know I will be referring to this over and over again, especially since it's a fun and enjoyable read. Not dry and dull like many books on writing. Highly recommend!

First things first. Tessa Dare recommends this. She writes WONDERFUL, fresh, funny historical romances, esp. her Spindle Cove series and imo the perfect debut, Goddess of the Hunt. So that's that. (But she wrote those before this came out, so she was a natural from the get-go. Maybe a grocery list is all she needs.) In sum, this is an organized to-do list for those who already know what they're doing. If, like me, you are not Tessa Dare but dearly wish you were, you might want some more help than offered here.For what it's worth I found this too short, sketchy and narrowly formulaic to be really helpful. As a checklist, it's useful; as an exploration of what makes a romance hum along, maybe not so much. The author translates the 22-step outline of John Truby for story into the romance genre alone but I think there are even more helpful resources, if that's what you're looking for.I also made a mistake ordering paperback. Kindle is the right format. It's not a keeper. There's a 20-step outline on p.22. The good thing and the bad thing is, once you get the gist of this, you've got it all. Each following section describes in a paragraph or two a point in the main outline. There are do's and don't's scattered here and there, such as don't dump background info into the story like an airplane drops blue toilet gunk in midair. (Too much can kill a guy in a convertible or your novel, not that she put it like this.) Point taken. But for me, it's just okay. I don't doubt the author knows what she's doing, I just wished she'd put more on the page.Leigh Michaels, On Writing Romance, provides more explanation of the romance elements and their variations, so more than one formula. It's excellent on structure, character arcs, developing romance and obstacles. There's more there there: more examples, more clarity, more help. Romance-focused how-to's aside, Take off Your Pants! by L. Hawker is very step by step help for building a story outline, and I find her focus on character arc (not plot) compelling, her articulation of the connections between character traits and outcomes laser sharp and meaningful. (In romance, what's more fundamental than the H/h's character arcs from not in love to in love, anyway?) I'm halfway through and it's helped me edit my next project already. Not a long book, but there's more to her guidance than a handy checklist. Also L. Weiland, Structuring Your Novel. Her explanation is blindingly clear and useful. Though not tailored for romance, she uses Pride and Prejudice among others to illustrate structure, plot development, etc., so compelling romance fits into the three-act structure outlined. The key thing is, she breaks down the parts of a scene with more in-depth explanation of each element and how they work together to propel the characters and the story forward. For a beginner hoping to understand the dynamics of a romantic story better, that was more helpful to me. (Not that I'll ever write a good romance. But I am trying.)But to recap, Tessa Dare says this is great.

The book was short, sweet, and simple, and I found it quite helpful. The author shows you how to write romance novels using four phases, with five "beats" or elements to make sure to include in each phase. I made an Excel spreadsheet with one tab for each phase, to be used in plotting my story.The book is essentially what I already knew from Save the Cat concepts except that it kind of drags them out longer for the push- and- pull of a romance book, and the focus on the two characters and their romance instead of the external arc/story. The author's tone is light and humorous. The one thing I disliked about the book was that there weren't many examples given (whereas Save the Cat is full of examples the whole way through.) The author does give a sample outline of one of her own romance novels at the end, but I think it would be more helpful broken down throughout the book as she shows the individual beats and how they turned out with her own outline/story.Overall I liked this book. It was a quick read, quite helpful to have in my repository of outlining/plotting books, and I'd recommend it to any aspiring or current romance writer.

After owning horses for 50 years, and then having a horse that had a mild case of laminitis, I found out that I needed to be more knowledgeable about my horse’s hooves, and could not just trust that the farrier would do what was needed. I have been on a quest to understand the anatomy, the physiology, and the mechanics of the hoof. There are so many differing opinions, I had been searching for something that not only explained the hoof in common language, but also showed pictures so I could see what was being referenced. I ordered this book, and it is AMAZING! The explanations, the pictures, and many discussions of common, and not so common, problems with the hoof make this book essential to my understanding. There is a saying, “no hoof, no horse”, and so I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to truly understand their horse. I would also suggest that farrier and vets have a copy of this book so that they can use the pictures and easy explanations when they are educating their clients.

I am about halfway thru the book and I am getting tons information out of it. IMO, this is written for the owners, self-trimmers, and self-taught, but not so much for the professional. That said, I am sure everyone can get something out of it, even professional farriers. The topics are very well covered and explanations, photos, markups are wonderful. This book will help you to better understand the hoof and better informed to talk to your farrier and vet. When it goes into a topic about some hoof deficiency or issue, whether it be something that originated by some confirmation, diet, poor management, etc, it does a great job of walking you thru. However, end the end, it does always suggest that you consult your hoof specialist, trimmer, or vet. I have no problems with that and fully understand why it stops there. But that is also one of the reasons I think that a professional trimmer or horse care provider might find this book lacking. I can highly recommend it for those of us who do our own trimming or are self-taught.

I've spent hundreds of dollars on books about hoof health, anatomy, and function, and I learned something from each of them. But this was by far the best, clearest, most comprehensive, and best illustrated of all of them, and at $25.44 - by far the best value I have seen. This is not a "how-to" guide to trimming or shoeing (although the knowledge provided will help immensely if that is your goal). Nor does it proselytize about barefoot vs shoes in any dogmatic way, but does explain the relative benefits of various approaches, and gives you the background you can use to evaluate and understand what your trimmer or farrier is explaining to you and doing (or not doing). I'm especially impressed with the beautiful photographs and diagnostic images and the graphics demonstrating what to look for; what imbalances and certain pathologies look like; and the beautifully done anatomical graphics showing the complex structures of the hoof. I can't recommend this strongly enough for anyone who owns or cares for horses.

I have studied the horse hoof for several years, triggered by watching my horses feet fall apart with traditional trimming and shoeing methods and then finally employing a wonderful (and rare) barefoot practitioner who follows the Pete Ramey and Jamie Jackson method of hoof care. This book calls it physiological trimming and highlights research of this method by many other veterinarians and scientists. Once I started practicing and understanding these methods I have been watching my horses hooves grow better and stronger instead of struggling to keep them sound. I now maintain my horses' hooves myself which has numerous advantages. Not only are my horses healthier and happier, I am saving $$ and am almost never inconvenienced by soundness or shoe issues. The fact that I can maintain their feet frequently (monthly give or take) rather than less frequently if a paid professional did the job creates far healthier and sustainable hooves. I can also spot potential problems and nip them in the bud (usually myself) before they become chronic and hard to reverse. The Essential Hoof Book marvelously explains the hoof and why the physiological methods work so well. It comprehensively explains the anatomy and inner-working of horse feet and the many ailments that can afflict them. It explains the unfortunate and unnecessary problems that many horse owners cause for their horses, lovingly but ignorantly exercising harmful methods thinking they are employing good methods. The illustrations are uncommonly clear, easy to understand and educational. The text is likewise. Kudos to the ladies who created this book! Kudos to all who contributed and all who's research highlighted within. My prayer is that all horse owners and professionals will educate themselves with the information this book so clearly illustrates. I wish I would have had this book years ago. It would have made my learning journey much easier and more effective, saving myself and my horses quite a bit of 'growing pains'. Even though I did already understand and practice much of what this book teaches, I learned so much more in a very short time by reading it. I'm now excited that I can keep my horses' feet even healthier in the years to come. THANK YOU Susan Kauffmann and Christina Cline and all who contributed to the knowledge contained in your book! I hope this book goes viral and becomes a standard reference for horse owners and horse care professionals.

this book is actually a pamphlet. recipes are as another review stated, looks as if they were pulled from the internet. and many are really oddball recipes that i don't think most would ever make.

Well I am very pleased with this Savory Pie and Quiche Cookbook. Since I love Quiche, I found quite a few delicious and easy to make recipes in this cookbook.What I especially like about this book:1 All recipes give the servings and prep work.2 The recipe ingredients are things I usually have in my kitchen.3 The recipes are easy to make and not that lo g to prepare.Highly recommenderecommended.

The Savory Pie & Quiche Cookbook contains a wide variety of savory quiche or pie recipes. The book is nicely laid out and the recipes seem to be clearly written. The interactive table of contents makes navigation easy. Some of the recipes you will find in this cookbook include:Tomato PieMini-QuicheAsparagus QuicheHam & Wild Rice QuicheRice Crust for QuicheQuick Cheeseburger PieSteak PieTurkey Pot PieEnglish Cottage PieFisherman PieRecommend.

WOW! Excellent, prompt service on part of seller. However, the book is only so-so. Fifty recipes on 53 pages. Mostly off-the-shelf ingredients, including ready-made crusts and biscuits, and other go-withs from a can, bottle, or jar. These are quick and easy recipes for those who don't have time or don't like to cook. If you like to cook and like to eat quality food, this is NOT the book for you.

The recipes seem good. My one complaint is that I haven't found even one dough recipe (yeah, I know, check the internet). Every recipe so far assumes a store-bought or already prepared crust. I expected at least one recipe for scratch dough and instructions for blind baking (as needed) at the beginning. Several alternative dough recipes/methods would have been nice. But now I know the proportions for the ingredients.

They say real men don't eat quiche but I am here to tell you I am a real man and I love it. If you think about it all quiche is is an omelette with more flavor and style then just a fried egg and because it's baked it's better for you too. So come on real men and grab a fork and dig right in. Thank you and enjoy your delicious and healthy dish anytime.

I love this book making the different Quiche recipes . make them, freeze them cook later. On a lazy day. Or when you have guest just stick in oven and enjoy your guest. So many to choose from. Amazon you rock!!!!!

Very bare bones recipe book, which I guess makes sense for the price. There are no photos or illustrations, just text recipes that probably could have been pulled from the internet. Some of them are a little vague on the crust and basically just tell you what filling to use, and some of the recipes seem very similar/redundant. All in all it's fine if you need some new ideas for quiche varieties, like you're on an all-quiche diet and you're getting bored with your usual standbys or something, but you can probably get the same information for free on the internet with minimal effort.

This is a Dick and Jane version of a Highland romance with simplistic dialogue, one-dimensional characters, a silly plot, and the most sorry sex scenes I have ever come across.“Oh, Alex, I am so happy! I like this! What do you want me to do?” She kept moving up and down ... Can we do this again?""I love you, too, Alex. But right now, I have more important things to do. Your son wants out."When you are either wincing or laughing out loud during what are supposed to be the tender moments, you know there is a problem. Although the vocabularly is at a very basic level, the subject material is not for the elementary set. Maybe this could provide comic relief in an adult ESL class.

I was looking for a light book to read and typically like historical romances. This was one of the worst historical romances I think I've ever met.The dialogue was juvenile and stilted and half the time made you cringe. The heroine was meant to be construed as strong and perfect in a thousand ways, but she came off as a simpering child. The hero wasn't anything to write home about.A few things that were annoying:The heroine endures torture at the hands of her stepbrother and the man she's supposed to marry and automatically she assumes all men are horrible monsters. She'd spent most of her life surrounded by people who cared for her, how could ALL of that be undone by her wimp of a stepbrother? It was such a glaring plot device that was meant to instill distrust in her so our trusty hero could ride in and fix all of her problems.On that note, the hero was supposed to be deep and understanding, but he was constantly yelling at her for ridiculous things. And it was so uncomfortable because he'd start his sentence in a normal tone, and then in four words was suddenly yelling? His yelling wasn't even the worst part about him. When they were getting intimate, it felt like he was coercing her into letting him touch her/undress her, which was incredibly uncomfortable. He kept telling her that if they were ever going to have a successful wedding night, she needed to let him touch her. It wasn't romantic in the least.And when it did come to their wedding night, it was one of the most awkward scenes ever, not to mention the fact that in the middle of sex she had a weird conversation with the ghost of her mother. How much more awkward could the scene get?I recommend skipping this one for your own good.

The entire read of this book was just painful. It is by far the worst book I have ever read.The author should have taken time to study the language and mannerisms from this time period before ever attempting a Scottish Highlander book.This is absolutely my favorite genre of book to read. Let me give you some pointers for your next book.1. Lairds NEVER say please. They are commanding, strong and respected. Their clan do as they are commanded. Every time the Laird said "do this or that 'Please', I wanted to scream. This grated on my nerves like you would not believe.2. The language was extremely painful to read. There were so many references of things they would never have said. Modern day terms. Just because you put no' for not once or twice or aye instead of yes does not mean you have mastered the language. Modern day language and terms are NOT for this type of book. They would have never said the word rape, they would have never used half the terms she used in this book.3. The sex scenes were atrocious at best. If this is a reflection of this author's personal experience, I am very very sad for them. I have great sympathy for women who have been violated and I mean no disrespect, but every time the screamed and ran away, I wanted to throw my kindle through the air. I was so frustrated. They were not written well at all, they were awkward, horribly cumbersome and just plain bad.4. The direct terms of his body parts.... oh my god. Really? Has this author ever read a romance novel before? Penis and testicles? How about shaft, rod, hardness or a half dozen other terms? Which I find quite ironic that she got some of the female body parts accurate.5. While we are on body parts, did you really have to mention the afterbirth? Yes, as women we all know it happens, but seriously, it has NO NO NO place in a romance novel. If you had any hope of making a good book you blew every chance you had with that one scene.6. Let's talk about contradiction next. In one moment she is stating how she can never touch a man, be married because of her rape, but the moment she sees him she is all hot and bothered. One moment she is saying she can't talk about her "secrets" and the next paragraph she is spilling her guts. One moment she is hot and bothered, the next moment she is swearing off men to join a convent. BTW, that would have NO children for her to tend after, no matter how many times she says it. 30 chapters of this stuff. WOW... talk about fluffing a book!7. Names: You really should research your historical names. UGH.8. Why was he yelling at her constantly? Or in some places at all? I mean out of the blue, normal conversations he YELLS. what the heck?There is just too much that went wrong with this book. It failed from chapter 1, and got worse. Like the brother could sneak up past all the mean just as she was giving birth, spilling his whole reasoning he was a tyrant, jumping to his death. Her "courage" and "heroism" all unbelievable and fake. The characters did not mesh well at all. Gushing over her drawings.. her "talents"...If there was anything good about the book, the brothers and older sister were likable. The little sister was not cute and got on my nerves.

Michael Pearl was raised in Memphis, Tennessee by parents who were faithful to point him to God. Mike is a graduate of Crighton College in Memphis. He worked with Memphis Union Mission for 25 years, while he ministered in hospitals and churches to the many military families. God eventually led him into the ministry of writing on child training and family relationships. He now feels this is his life's work and calling. The result of this work led to the formation of No Greater Joy Ministries (NGJ), a 501 (c) (3). The largest project that NGJ has ever been involved in is the Good and Evil Project, a work to translate the Illustrated Bible Storybook Good and Evil into 100 languages. My husband and I are planning a two week trip to Utah in October to celebrate our 65th birthdays driving from SLC to Moab and on to Navaho Nation and Bryce and Zion ending up in Las Vegas.I was reluctant to download the kindle version of a new guidebook that had not been reviewed, but glad I did.I like the way the authors have divided the big state into sections. Easier to digest the info that way. I especially like the Say it Right section with correct pronunciations. Not being Mormon, I found the section on Conduct and Customs interesting if we encounter standoffish folks. What I hadn't thought of at all, and the authors brought to my attention, was the possibility we wouldn't be able to buy gas on Sundays and the likelihood restaurants will be closed. Will make sure our gas tank and cooler are full.The other thing that I found helpful was the recommendations on healthy restaurants and vegan/vegetarian friendly restaurants. We are both 20 year vegetarian/vegan plant based eaters so to find this in a guidebook is a plus. Even carnivores might was to take a break once in awhile. Very helpful.Although the kindle version is very handy, I will likely buy the paperback as I like to bend, tear apart and mark up a guidebook. After all, a guidebook is a minuscule cost of our entire trip, but can make a big difference.

One of the things I really like about Moon Guides is that they are very complete, covering everything that is necessary to know about visiting the destination. The "essential" section covers transportation, health and safety, business hours, services, etc. This is especially important for visiting Utah, because it is predominantly Mormon and slightly different in terms of customs and culture. For example, it is good to know that everything shuts down on Sundays, and the traveler needs to plan ahead to gas up and figure out what to do about meals before Sunday arrives. A very nice section of historical background of just the right length enhances an understanding of the area.I also appreciate the Moon Guide way of organizing the destination into manageable sections, greatly facilitating trip planning. A day to day itinerary featuring the best of Utah is provided, though cross referencing with page numbers that is included in some Moon guides is not available in this one. All the sites are described in detail, with a good range of recommended lodging and restaurants.We have been to Utah many times and thought we've pretty much covered most of where we want to go, but this guide helped us identify Kanab as a new area to explore.

It was a good guide. But we were trying to find out about Utah Data Center but there was no information. We had to figure out the hike ourselves and how to get there. We didn't even get access to it. Great story!

Fun story. Being the middle book of a trilogy, it had the burden of maintaining interest and raising the stakes without giving too much away. Morris did a great job. This story--and the trilogy as a whole--is one that I actively recommend to my friends.

The only drawback I had is I did not re-read the first book before I read this. Loving this series

The publisher sent me a copy of this book after I reviewed The Wraiths of War and I voluntarily reviewed it.The Society of Blood is great and fills all the gaps I had from reading this series out of order. I still think The Wraiths of War is the best book but this was a great read. This book picks up a couple of years after the end of the first book. I really liked the fact it was set in Victorian London for some reason. This gave a delightful dark tone to the whole book. This book opens with things in a bit of a mess, Locke and Clover are trapped in Victorian London with a new daughter Hope who Locke rescued from a place of evil trying to figure things out. Locke has a lot to figure out. His daughter is still missing. His ex, who’s been in a psychiatric hospital since The Dark Man did something nefarious to her starts appearing from different time lines. The sinister Wolves of London linger in the shadows. There’s a lot going on. The Society of Blood is paced really well and is one of those books it’s hard to put down when you start to read. You can literally pick it up to read a chapter and suddenly realise seven hours have passed. I was impressed by the way the author handles the complex time travel and multi-verse of Locke’s world without being confusing or overloading you with information. There are a lot of dark and sinister things going on in Locke’s world and just as you think things have calmed down a bit spider monsters crawl out of the shadows and send you screaming again. I thoroughly enjoyed The Society of Blood and would recommend it and the whole trilogy.

About the Author

Rosary O'Neill is a native New Orleanian living in New York City. Her book served as the basis for a major installation on the Baby Doll tradition at the Presbytere unit of the Louisiana State Museum as part of the museum's permanent display on the history of Carnival in Louisiana.

I picked this up for research on a novel I'm working on. My wife and I had our honeymoon in New Orleans, years before Katrina, and so I've always been fascinated with the city--even though I'm not a resident. That said, I had NO idea about the extensive history of Maris Gras and the krewes behind it. What an incredible journey into an exclusive subculture the rest of the country (or world) likely has no idea about. For lovers of history, revelry and the Big Easy--check this out.From what I can see, no other author has been able to have such incredible access to these secret societies and she does a delicious job in lifting the veil. Well done!

If you're at all interested in the "behind the scenes" world of Mardi Gras, this is a, frankly, astounding book. I've read quite a bit about mardi gras, and I haven't yet found a book that is so well researched and presented. You get a history lesson about the socio-economic position of the rich and poor, presented in context of the political machinations of every generation for the past 150 years. As if that weren't enough information, she has spreadsheets that break down the average costs of everything from annual dry-cleaning and alterations of tuxedos and gowns, to the beads and throws for both Old-line and New Krewes. A special chapter focuses on African American Carnival. While the Gay Tableau societies are mentioned more than once, this may be one area where I might have liked to had more information. But on the whole, the book is a BIBLE for anyone who wants to learn more about Carnival, or, if you're like myself and you have a business that caters to the people in the Mardi Gras world.

The book layout is choppy and not well laid out. Sections seem disorganized and very short lacking the detail I was looking for. We have gone to Mardi Gras every year in New Orleans for 15 years, but neither my wife or I found this book interesting.

I could say many things, but I will just stick to the two main reasons this book is misguided about Mardi Gras and New Orleans in general 1. this book has A LOT of inaccuracies. Some of the information is just flat out wrong. Locations and spellings are wrong (Jesuit High School isn't Uptown and is never called "Jesuits") 2. Racist references about minorities - "Jesuits (in reference to high school even though that makes no sense) have few Jews, but both have large enrollments that include African American and lower class boys." What the hell? What the literal hell? Did someone proof read this story? All of the above ridiculousness is from ONE PAGE OF THIS BOOK. I assume that you can imagine how the rest of the book unfolds. This book needs to do better.
