The word "dumb" is used...I will not read this again and actually had to change the words myself in the middle of reading. Good thing my kids can't read themselves yet. I understand trying to find words to rhyme, but this author's use of words to try to rhyme was desperate and inappropriate at times. The story does have a good message it is trying to convey. I believe it could have been done in a better way with more appropriate language.
This adorable, simple read is one that young children would simply enjoy! The illustrations are welcoming, warming, and work well with the story at hand.Written in simplistic language and in a rhyming fashion, I can see parents/teachers reading it with preschool and Kindergarten children. It could even be used a learning tool for simple poems for children to learn.When Dan was worried about what a neighbor would think of his newfound friend, I found it both heartbreaking and endearing due to the outcome. In other words, this could be a nice introduction to friendship and what others may think/say to certain friends.The only suggestion I would make is to keep the rhyming lines together on the same page rather than separating them. Written in AA, BB, CC, etc. rhyme, it was a bit of a challenge to find a rhythm when, for example, line C would be on one page and its rhyming partner C was on the other page.Overall, I really enjoyed this read and it warmed my heart. I would recommend this read to early readers who enjoy rhymes, and to parents/teachers to read to young children!
I loved the illustrations in this book, with lots of detail and perfect for young children, my 4 year old grandson found the story was easy to listen to and wants to read it again tonight.If your kids love Raymond Briggs' 'the snowman' then they'll love this snowman too...The story touched slightly on peer pressure but it was a bit lost on a 4 yr old and didn't go into detail for older kids. But its nice to see kids books trying to highlight the issues that kids deal with on a daily basis.It also has a good rhythm to read out loud, since it is written in rhyme. I'll enjoy reading it again tonight
In a nutshell...this is a sad sad story. I bought the paperback for $9.99. I was going to return it but my refund would've been less than that. I can't even think of a place to donate it because any child reading or hearing this story needs to know that just because the neighbor kid is mean doesn't mean that he has to make up imaginary friends. One star because I had to in order to submit my review. No stars in my book!!Don't waste your money. Happy Holidays!!
The download from the Kindle site, which said the book was free, did not download the book. Instead, it downloaded advertisements. I was very disappointed. I am a retired great grandmother with three great grandchildren who visit me fairly often. We were planning to read the book. The children were disappointed too. It's not easy to explain to small children that the download didn't work.
What a wonderful winter adventure for children! The pace is fast, the illustrations beautiful and the key learning profound. I love it how children will learn that what others think about our quirks is their problem and how we need to listen to the little voice inside us and follow our dreams. If your old friend is looking down on you - it's time for a new friend!
I like to read to my littles, and look for books that both rhyme and have rythem. If I have to read a book over and over and over... I want a book that is pleasant to read! This book meets those criteria, as well as having great illustrations. A pleasure to read to the toddler, and she really likes it, too!
