The cover is the best part of the book. I bought the book because one reviewer said he laughed on every page, but he must be easily amused, because I never laughed once. The author relates how she got dysentery, malaria and a dislocated knee while traveling, and how she was frightened by dogs, monkeys and prostitutes. Good travel writers can transform misfortune into interesting stories because of affection for the countries and people visited, or at least a good eye for detail. Ten minutes after reading the book, I couldn't remember any of the countries the author traveled through or any of the people she met except for one monk who liked to swim. The people she described most were her disfunctional boyfriends. The last chapter is typical, where she relates her non-adventure of staying in the hotel room with the baby while everybody else goes out and has fun. The only reason I read the whole book was because I had a back spasm and I was too uncomfortable to get up and get another book. Now I wish I had just thrown it against the wall and taken a nap instead.

i have a slight and manageable learning disability that makes reading a bit of a chore, so if a book doesn't hold my interest, i don't read it. and i read this book start to finish and enjoyed every bit of it with the exception of the author's too-evocative description of her dislocated knee (perhaps because i'm a nurse it was too easy visualize).anyway.........the style is fluid and friendly, the stories are alternately funny andevocative and it's got the ability to create the 'you were there' feeling necessary to distinguish one travel book from the hundreds of travel books written by people who shouldn't write travel books.Best praise i can offer: i'm now going to search out her other books

Excellent travel book, while I wouldn't like to travel with her I like be to read her, very funny book!

Will someone please recommend me a great female travel writer!! I am somewhat like Ayun to a small degree; have my backpacking experiences that are crazy, have had many travels on a shoestring budget, and had my share of shady characters and illnesses on the road- but she was actually kind of a boring writer who also did not always use common sense. Someone else criticized her shoestring budget or referred to her travelling as "poverty" travel. Well, I do not know her personal financial situation in the States, but most of us backpackers choose to try to see as much as we can on the road which involves staying in some dives, using sqat toilets (most non-western countries only have these) and we do have to count every penny- she was just living the life of a typical backpacker who is not travelling on her parents dime (I assume this was her situation). I have used some of her same techniques in the past to stretch my dollar such as sleeping in airports (pre-9/11), sleeping in bus stations, couch surfed, and living on the bread, yogurt, and cheese diet. I do not have to be in the Hilton to have a good time and I want to be able to keep as much of my savings for emergencies and enable myself to see as many countries as possible. However, I do agree with her critics in regards to spending her precious money on alcohol and drugs; that is just plain stupid!In my travels, I have witnessed so many fellow hostel mates who cannot seem to go a day without smoking a joint and I agree that is such a waste of money and dangerous. I do not like the attitude that I see of such types who seem to believe that because they are from the West, that they will be exempt from the law. I think that these types should watch some episodes of "Locked Up Abroad" before setting foot on the plane. She was foolish and very lucky on her journeys in this regard. I did however like her narration of those starving days on the road- the shoestring budget while watching everyone scarf down a good meal. I usually reserve my finances for a few good meals, but she would have encountered some delicious economical meals in some of the countries that she chose.I was hoping to read a funny book about the backpacker's experiences from the female perspective. Hoping she encountered some of the crazy, unique things that us women embark on- ie- marriage proposals from strangers, the need for head scarfs, cat calls, ect... but I didn't get much of that from this book. Her France trip with her mother only entailed a discussion of a fashion show and her eagerness to get home to her boyfriend. Her trip to Amsterdam was somewhat enlightening but still a bit flat. I liked reading the typical swindling that she encountered in India(glad to read someone else who also got in the same type of tourist trap). Her trip to Romania also seemed to give me some insight into the lives and culture of the Romanian college kids. However, I found myself skipping many parts and a bit bored. I was hoping for some more humor and feel for the culture and the locals. Her trip to Edinburgh only involved the discussion of her theater production and child caring problems. Over all, some of this book had a few laughs and good tips and is worth a read if you buy it used. Meanwhile, I will stick to Paul Theroux and Chuck Thompson until I can find some good female travel narratives. And yes, I have read "Whose Panties are These" and "Women's Travel Stories" 2008, and most of them were dry as well. So the search is still on!

As someone who once traveled on a beach-sleeping budget, I was very excited to see that my favorite mothering memoirist (Ayun Halliday, The Big Rumpus) had written a book about her far flung travels. It was especially a bonus that most of the travels were to places I had not quite made it to. Ayun is a traveler after my own heart, with a drive to really step off the beaten path (and sometimes tumble painfully off of it) and immerse herself in the local culture; questionable food stalls, dark alleys, remote villages and all. My favorite aspect of the writing is the author's knack for a well turned phrase: you never know what you'll get after a comma! Lots of laughs, usually. The way she adds details to a description, building up the comedy and the unexpected factor, is hilarious. I'm also game for good accounts of psychedelic experiences, and there are some crazy ones here.The author sets herself apart from the typical "omg, did you get that at Gap?" American backpacker. Her analytical musings on a variety of situations highlight the unexpected. The quest of the travels seems to be to find something that is interesting and different from the regular day to day of western existence back home. Sometimes the author finds moments of bliss in a zen-like way, in the small things; the way a sparse hotel room's walls end in latticework that continues up to the ceiling, or in a gorilla's roar. It's these moments that hit the nail on the head in terms of meeting an expectation imagined when still at home, dreaming of traveling. More often though, are the moments of anti-bliss, which illustrate the flipside of the totally foreign travel experience. The author's unflappable spirit in the face of random thieves, illnesses, and scary dogs, makes this book a giggle-inducing page turner 'til the end.

In a nutshell, this book covers a large representation of fascinating and beautiful antique stock and bond certificates that collectors of fine art or other types of graphic art would enjoy. I see the big advantage of collecting such certificates is the ability to frame them, unlike stamps or coins.First the structure of the book. It is divided into three sections: Fine Lithography, Fine Engravings, and Later Date Engravings. On every right-hand side page is a stunning full color depiction of the certificate and on the left-hand page for each certificate is a short description of the certificate (such as date, printer, and vignette) and a brief write-up about the company that issued it.The features I like about the book are that it covers certificates from a wide range of industries, not just mining, or railroad, or automobile related. In addition, the vignettes that appear on the certificates are all different. I appreciate the fact that the names of the banknote or lithography printers are mentioned for each document.I feel this is a great guide for someone who is considering getting in to or is just getting in to the hobby to see the numerous types of antique stock certificates that are available. It is also useful for a seasoned collector who can see items that may not currently be in their collection. If You Were Me And Lived In Hungary is a charming book for elementary aged children. The author, Carole P. Roman, introduces children to everyday life in Hungary. Geography, history, culture, holidays, places of interest, foods, and Hungarian vocabulary are presented to the reader.The text as well as illustrations engage the reader. My grandchildren enjoyed comparing their lives with children who live in a country other than thei own.

When you talk about Hungary, the first thing your think of is paprika. This book was filled with fun facts, from learning about Erno Rubik, who invented the Rubiks Cube to finding out that Water Polo and handball are popular games. Carole P. Roman describes really interesting aspects about Hungary. I enjoyed the book

Cute book but very little substance for kids over 5, not impressed

I so wanted to like this book.However, when a book has only 12 actual pages of text (of which 4 pages have only 2-3 lines of text on them), you would think that a bit of fact-checking is not too much to expect. But, despite being copyrighted 2014, the book says :"When you go shopping for a ... you would use a Hungarian florin (flo-rin) to pay for it." The florin has never been the unit of currency in Hungary; it is the forint. The name of the cherry soup is also misspelled ("Menygyleves"), and the attempts at pronunciation (for example, indicating that Dobos is pronounced Tob-ush) are wacky. There are several other issues, as well.The whole book appears to have been transcribed poorly by someone who did not do rudimentary checking that would have taken only a short amount of time.

The author, Ms. Roman, has an extensive series of books she has written about many different countries, all geared towards children. This book will explore Hungary from a child's point-of-view and interests.For example, mommy and daddy are referred to as Anya and Apa, respectively in Hungary. Grandmas are called Nagy's. Popular names for little girls living there are: Erzse'bet, Suzanna or Judit. Favorite boy's names are: Attila, Laszlo and Peter.While reading the book, children can imagine what it would be like to eat popular Hungarian foods, such as a thick vegetable and meat stew called goulash. They can decide what they would think of having the traditional red paprika sprinkled in it. Hungarian children consider it a treat to be served menygyleves, a cherry soup, or the dessert dobos torta, a sponge cake with caramel.Many interesting geography facts are a part of this book. After reading it, a child will have learned that Hungary is a landlocked country, and that its largest city Budapest, is actually divided by the Danube River. Because of that, Buda and Obuda are on one side, and Pest is on the opposite river bank. Children will learn that popular Hungarian vacations take place at the Caves of Aggtelek--and there are more than seven hundred caves--or The Balaton, a lake that despite its name meaning mud or swamp, is actually quite lovely.Many more interesting Hungarian facts will be found between the pages of this volume. Information runs the gamut from Hungary's most popular sport to what kind of money is used there. Well written and full of great information that will hold a child's attention these books are a gem. Excellent and informative but it would be helpful if the author would bring out a new edition based upon 2016 figures. (i) 2012 and 2013 figures, as used in the book, are so out of date in this rapidly changing world. (ii) It would also be good if he drew attention to the pressures which the large utility companies in the US are taking to slow down the installation of domestic systems which will result in the adoption of domestic solar energy when batteries are more efficient so as to cut out the utility distribution control and costs. (iii) include more information on all the realistic technologies for domestic energy storage.

PROS:1. I completely agree with almost everything. I'm particularly pleased to see Seba has not fallen for the hydrogen mirage. (If efficiency can be radically increased, someday I may be a fan of H2, but I'm not holding my breath.)2. Unlike some authors, he doesn't give a heavy barrage of cute storytelling about the personalities and history, except where it's really relevant.3. The book is obviously a polemic of sorts, but at least Seba doesn't go off on any diatribes about tangential political matters.CONS:1. The graphics are just abominable. Some of the most important figures are not even readable. Heck, such spectacular stuff should be in color.2. The copy editing is also awful. Misspellings, wrong word choices, often even entire missing words, or phrases that amount to gibberish. If the missing word is something like "billion," then it really matters!3. As others have said, yes, by now it's out of date. Then again, the way things are going, I suppose it was inevitable. (I assume there's a blog.)4. Just a suggestion, but something might also be added about what happens AFTER 2030. I could see PV being so cheap as to actually create problems, such as "satisficing" leading to stagnating progress in energy efficiency and other improvements. And with, say, a quadrilllion watts of cheap electrical capacity, what would we do with all that power? Capitalism being what it is, I'm sure there will be no problem coming up with uses. But with the clean energy transition accelerating faster than Ludicrous Mode in a Tesla, such thinking may be lagging behind developments.

This is the first book anybody concerned about climate change should read. It isn't ABOUT climate change at all, but it provides the first real reasons for optimism that we'll ditch fossil fuels for renewables in time to save civilization. And that fundamental economics, not political activism, will be the primary reason why.I've spent a good part of the last two months networking in the field of climate change among the concerned. It amazes me that it took that long for somebody to point me to this book.READ IT!

Watch his videos on youtube first and see if you want to read his book. in my opinion Seba has the clearest crystal ball on the coming revolution in energy and transportation. We're at the tipping point he advocates today and has the numbers to show how solar, batteries and the EV car follow Moore's law in a predictable way that will displace fossil fuels and internal combustion engines. He also sees how the entrenched industries will fight back. Must read.

Nice reading, although repetitive a quite a bit. The entire book can be summarized as "wake up, conventional energy! It's time for solar and wind." All the scenarios are rather convincing but lack in details. The difficulties seem nothing in comparison to the grand scheme of solar, storage and electric autonomous cars. The figures are mostly readable and can be zoomed in contrast to the complaints by some reviewers. The numbers seem real and convincing. Overall a good read and may impact many people's decision on future investments.

Tony Seba did his homework. He makes many bold predictions but he backs them up with facts.This book is a GREAT GIFT for eco-concious friends and family.If you even occasionally think about energy and the environment…. buy this book.If you are an investor who wants to see the future…. buy this book.Science and sociology teachers: This book is not political. It is based on Seba's own insights and experience from his work in the Silicon Valley. This book is an easy read for students. Lots of good insight into how science drives society and vice-versa.

While certainly written as a polemic, Seba has the facts to back up his thesis here. Reading this work three years on from first publication is interesting as the author's predictions are proving to be conservative, with both the prices of batteries and solar cells falling quicker than he tipped. This is probably the most important book around at the moment, and should be required reading for policy makers everywhere.

The word "dumb" is used...I will not read this again and actually had to change the words myself in the middle of reading. Good thing my kids can't read themselves yet. I understand trying to find words to rhyme, but this author's use of words to try to rhyme was desperate and inappropriate at times. The story does have a good message it is trying to convey. I believe it could have been done in a better way with more appropriate language.

This adorable, simple read is one that young children would simply enjoy! The illustrations are welcoming, warming, and work well with the story at hand.Written in simplistic language and in a rhyming fashion, I can see parents/teachers reading it with preschool and Kindergarten children. It could even be used a learning tool for simple poems for children to learn.When Dan was worried about what a neighbor would think of his newfound friend, I found it both heartbreaking and endearing due to the outcome. In other words, this could be a nice introduction to friendship and what others may think/say to certain friends.The only suggestion I would make is to keep the rhyming lines together on the same page rather than separating them. Written in AA, BB, CC, etc. rhyme, it was a bit of a challenge to find a rhythm when, for example, line C would be on one page and its rhyming partner C was on the other page.Overall, I really enjoyed this read and it warmed my heart. I would recommend this read to early readers who enjoy rhymes, and to parents/teachers to read to young children!

I loved the illustrations in this book, with lots of detail and perfect for young children, my 4 year old grandson found the story was easy to listen to and wants to read it again tonight.If your kids love Raymond Briggs' 'the snowman' then they'll love this snowman too...The story touched slightly on peer pressure but it was a bit lost on a 4 yr old and didn't go into detail for older kids. But its nice to see kids books trying to highlight the issues that kids deal with on a daily basis.It also has a good rhythm to read out loud, since it is written in rhyme. I'll enjoy reading it again tonight

In a nutshell...this is a sad sad story. I bought the paperback for $9.99. I was going to return it but my refund would've been less than that. I can't even think of a place to donate it because any child reading or hearing this story needs to know that just because the neighbor kid is mean doesn't mean that he has to make up imaginary friends. One star because I had to in order to submit my review. No stars in my book!!Don't waste your money. Happy Holidays!!

The download from the Kindle site, which said the book was free, did not download the book. Instead, it downloaded advertisements. I was very disappointed. I am a retired great grandmother with three great grandchildren who visit me fairly often. We were planning to read the book. The children were disappointed too. It's not easy to explain to small children that the download didn't work.

What a wonderful winter adventure for children! The pace is fast, the illustrations beautiful and the key learning profound. I love it how children will learn that what others think about our quirks is their problem and how we need to listen to the little voice inside us and follow our dreams. If your old friend is looking down on you - it's time for a new friend!

I like to read to my littles, and look for books that both rhyme and have rythem. If I have to read a book over and over and over... I want a book that is pleasant to read! This book meets those criteria, as well as having great illustrations. A pleasure to read to the toddler, and she really likes it, too!
