Really enjoyable, dreamy manga. Many of the short stories provide a surrealist insight into everyday life.

This is a nice, well-translated book. I hope they translate more of this author's works :)

From the nicely designed front cover to the back cover, you’ll note that this is a very quirky release from: How it looks The name The fact that there is a long paragraph on the cover itself.Also note that the long paragraph is something you might want to read because it kicks off the very first story in the manga.Also there is a summary of crabs (and why their shells turn red when boiled) when you open the book.…panpanya’s An Invitation from a Crab is one quirky manga.This manga combines some doujin stories of panpanya’s and stories published on the web and in print, likely Hakusensha’s Rakuen magazine. All of them revolve around an unnamed protagonist living in the 2-chome area of Japan, and getting herself into the strangest (and mundane) situations. With 18 stories of various lengths, you’ll read a story about the protagonist following a crab (just not a King crab). You’ll read a story about her falling asleep on the train, and what really happens to your body when you realize you got off the wrong stop after waking up.Then you’ll also get a story where your grandma gives you toys…and they grow more and more difficult to understand as you grow up…?An Invitation from a Crab’s stories will provide both a ton of jokes and/or sneak (or not sneak) a bit of social commentary around a couple of these stories. There’s one story involving a part-time job at a factory where she has to break coconuts, which fuels the area’s electricity. There’s another story involving what happens when you save a bird from tanukis.The one I’ll only mostly spoil is THE PERFECT SUNDAY. You know how sometimes preparation and planning is very much a thing we have to do? Well for our protagonist, it’s not something she’s done before. But after a suggestion from her dog to just do her homework so she can enjoy herself later, she finishes her homework. It turns out to be an exhilarating experience to be finished so fast.But rather than enjoy the spoils of free time, she plans ahead to try and have the perfect Sunday to relax. This manages to lead her to plan too far ahead somehow. That makes sense — you’re definitely going to waste a lot of time when you’re building a machine to create a pleasant mood as you wake up.Needless to say, your enjoyment of those stories will totally depend on what you value personally. For me, I pretty much laughed at most of them, as the comedic timing, the dialogue, and who she was interacting with — from normal humans to oddly shaped creatures to her dog — is hilarious.But what will impact your enjoyment — and the commentary within the stories — is this art style. panpanya’s art ranges from simplistic to detailed to super experimental. Like you know most panel boxes are done elegantly in manga? Expect to see those hand drawn and definitely not accurate in this one. There are a lot of really cool uses of watercolor, and characters are drawn with really good detail. You’ll also find some oddly designed characters and some that are drawn fairly simplistically, which might clash with the backgrounds.That, however, is what makes this stand out. Some of those designs enhance a lot of what the stories are about, which is either laughing at a talking fish supposedly spouting words or our protagonist teaming up with her dog to start a takuan shop. This may not be for everyone, but this manga likely wouldn’t work any other way in any other style. And that’s what makes it a very good unique manga, and not just unique just because it looks different.An Invitation from a Crab I would say is a refreshing work to read. There’s likely manga of a quirky quality published already, so I won’t say this totally is different from anything else. But it feels like something I haven’t read much of right now. So if you’re in the market for something that can say it’s something new and creative, this work is one you’ll want to have on your shelf.- Justin

The very nature of today's world is such that there is no surefire curriculum, program, system, or app that fits any one school district, school building, classroom, or even, any one child.Every chapter is clearly thought out and ends with thought-provoking questions that should be considered by everyone who plays any part in educating children. In the end, it's all about a culture. And that culture is held together by the most important driver in schools... I have been an educator for 24 years. This is, by far, the best education-related book I've ever read. If you are looking for a book that delivers a step-by-step program to solve all our educational woes, don't buy this one. What The Innovator's Mindset does is present the concept of change, not as a thing to aspire to, but a necessity to take hold of. It begins by making clear what innovation is and isn't. The second part focuses on developing cultures of innovative mindset within your school building and system. What I especially appreciate is the encouragement for school leaders to consider enacting change that would most benefit *their* community. That says to me Couros is advocating for REAL, meaningful innovation that authentically transforms where we are.The third part is about action: how do you get others to get on board? (Always a struggle, but this book provides a lot of practical ways to persuade others to see the wealth of benefits for all). The last part has us educators assessing where we are, where we need to go, and how to get there. Couros doesn't preach; he empowers. He is giving us the tug, the push, the nudge we all need to stop talking and start doing what's necessary to meet the needs of our children. One of my favorite quotes found at the start is "If students leave school less curious than when they started, we have failed them." Let's do right by those entrusted to us. I wholeheartedly encourage all educational leaders to read, highlight, mull over, and be inspired by this book.

The first time I saw The Innovator’s Mindset, I was honestly a bit afraid. “Innovator” sounded brash, I wasn’t ready for that. But after a year of steps toward creating a more student-centered learning environment, I was ready to jump in and I’m so glad I did. Teachers are constantly inundated with the newest thing, so it gave me hope when Couros revealed “different for the sake of different can be a waste of time and may even leave us worse off than where we started.” He calls us to instead of thinking “outside of the box,…become innovative inside the box.” Not viewing everything we’ve done in past negatively, just that we should consistently be evaluating how we might improve. It’s “a balance between drawing on experience while maintaining a willingness to try something new.” This book tied together so many thoughts and trends I currently follow in education: student voice, choice, technology integration, growth mindset, reflection, and “we’re all learners.” While directly speaking to administrators throughout the book, I still found numerous examples and resources that I can incorporate as a classroom teacher. More than anything, this book left me feeling inspired that the learning environment I long for is possible. “Sometimes, people are afraid to share what they want because they don’t know that getting it is even a possibility.” Thanks for opening up those possibilities!

There is something about Achaemenid Persia I have found fascinating since I read my parents battered paperback couple of Mary Renault's The Persian Boy. So I was really happy to take this on and see what new and interesting aspects that a biography of Xerxes would hopefully deliver.It did not. Instead I found that this was more a compilation of Xerxes in literature and historical mention. There is heavy focus on his invasion of Greece, but that is more of a detailing of others and what they did. There is climatic focus on his death possibly being due to his attempts at an affair.But I found the structure odd. There was no strong chronological flow which a biography should employ in my opinion. And there was way too much referencing to literary 'references'. Some of whom I have a hard time seeing as possible experts on a man that clearly has not had significant archaeologic finds to allow for such a new book to hit shelves. Lord Byron might have found him interesting and a subject worth writing about. I agree whole heartedly But I'm not sure Byron is historical apt or anywhere near correct in his assessments. In fact too many of the mentions of Xerxes fall into some kind of agenda driven usage. Few if any of the Greeks who wrote about him close enough in any way to be slightly authentic, do so without picking a 'side' in the whole East versus West aspect.And Stoneman does address this. But in a way I feel is too little too late. Too much is left in the hands of others who have already decided the role Xerxes played simply because of the side they were writing from. Even later literary personages like Byron see him solely through the eyes of one side.I guess if you want a book that does a good job of collecting (though not presenting) tons of references to Xerxes as a figure that appears elsewhere (think of it as the biographical equivalent of his IMDB page -- as a character though) this could work well in that regard. If you want a strong biography of a significant historical character, sadly it is not here in my opinion.

Most of us in the West know Xerxes as the Persian king who lost a war against the Greeks. Popular historians have often depicted him as indolent and indulgent. The movie 300 is probably the most prominent depiction of Xerxes in pop culture in recent years. If nothing else, Richard Stoneman tries to disabuse readers of those prior conceptions in his new biography “Xerxes,” the first major biography of the king in decades.Stoneman argues that Xerxes was likely not the caricature history has often depicted. He puts the Greek war in perspective, noting that Xerxes continued to rule 15 years after his defeat at Salamis. Instead, Stoneman points to Xerxes’ public building projects at Persepolis as his true mark on history. He also points out that, far from being a womanizer, for most of his life Xerxes had only one wife and seemed devoted to her.Stoneman even manages to put Xerxes’ supposed cruelty in context. In traditional Persian conceptions of kingship, the king symbolized the kingdom. So when Xerxes asked soldiers to depart from a ship to allow the king to board – leading to their certain death – we should view that as not simply cowardice but as a testament to the importance of the king.Stoneman is excellent at finding new ways of understanding ancient Persian political culture. Yet, as he seems to admit, he can’t bring Xerxes “to life” for modern readers. Part of this is due to the lack of sources; we can’t psychoanalyze Xerxes without data. But Stoneman’s writing also tends to be dry. Stoneman spends much of the book countering the more dramaticized popular depictions of Xerxes, so perhaps his style is deliberate.Stoneman’s book is geared more towards historians than for the general public. He references other scholars and historical figures with little explanation or context. If you don’t know who Themistocles is before going into the book, this probably isn’t for you. However, if you’re familiar with the basic history of the time and want help separating myth from reality, Stoneman is a good guide.(For readers looking for a dramatic retelling of the Greco-Persian War, I recommend Tom Holland’s Persian Fire.)[I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review]

I'm sure you'll be surprised at the number .. then to lose weight ... scale back your food. Yes, it's that simple.The menopause info wasn't new or exciting .. if you've read any of Suzanne Somer's books she basically cover bio hormones. Nothing concrete on any herbals other than a list of thing to try. Menopause is a tricky and one size does not work for all .. it's a try and try again for some kind of normalcy.

I have a huge failing. I admit it. I keep buying these books in hopes of finding some revolutionary new information that will help me regain my life after menopause. This isn't that book. Nothing new in the fight here. I don't know a single, solitary woman who has the time to deal with a meal specific diet plan. Not on this planet anyway. My husband is a picky eater and I don't have the inclination to cook two different meals every day. What I need is for someone to cut to the chase and give me the guidelines to follow so I can incorporate them into my everyday cooking. Guess what? Most of us that cook and eat and have for 50 odd years know all this stuff anyway.Buck up ladies. This isn't the answer. Maybe the next book out will be. :0)

Good book,like the recipes

Not as good as expected, many recipes repeated.

Nice Paleo book.

Although I've yet to actually try any of the recipes, there are so many issues and typos in them I'm afraid of how something will turn out. I don't know if the book was even proof-read before publication. Here are some examples: Page 87 has a recipe for Paleo Marshmallows. The prep instructions mention the palm sugar mixture. The problem is the list of ingredients doesn't include palm sugar....just honey. The same issue cropped up on page 118 for Pineapple Cake where the instructions mention sour cream but is not listed in the ingredients. Sour cream isn't even considered paleo.Further, one recipe calls for 5/6 cup of palm sugar. Really? I don't know about any of you but I don't have a measuring cup with that on it. Why not 3/4 C +2 Tbs. for example. The author also uses recipes that call for almond flour AND almond meal. They are the same thing, just google it.There are so many problems with this book discovered in just a few minutes of skimming through, I will likely return it. What a disappointment. Sorry Ms. Conrad, this book needs to be revised to correct the problems.

Poorly written, poorly edited.A few recipes call for melting cacao nibs. Cacao nibs do not melt. The author is definitely not qualified to write a cook book in this field. If you want to find a real Paleo book, look for something written by a nutritionist who understands the ingredients better. Do not waste your money.

Some interesting recipes, but it feels like at least half the recipes are just duplicates of a single recipe with one ingredient modified. What a waste of space. Also there are so many typos it makes me doubt the accuracy of all of the recipes. Photos are reused for different recipes - for example, peach crisp and peach squares share the same photo but are different recipes, so there is really no way they should look identical. Lazy writing, lazy editing.

Definitely not for a Paleo beginner who isn't used to normal measurements of commonly used ingredients. The author/editor makes so many mistakes it's unreal!

Nancy Silverton seemingly tries to cover all bases in her book "La Brea Bakery: Recipes for the Connoisseur." She even goes so far as to tell you to take the temperature of the floor where you are making sour-dough starter! If your kitchen cannot be kept between 70 and 75 degrees, she tells you to take the starter "down to the basement" where it is cooler. Gee wiz, Nancy - not everyone has a basement, especially in California! You should know that! Our air conditioned home in South Florida is usually kept between 76 and 78 degrees, primarily due to the cost of electricity. I should have drawn the conclusion that my sourdough starter was going to fail because it simply is not cool enough. But why didn't Nancy just come out and say "forget it" if you can't cool down your kitchen?? But here is the real rub: people on YouTube are making great sourdough starters in a week's time, using only a table spoon of flour … and then feeding with roughly the same amount on the feeding schedule. With Nancy's method, one uses and discards about 10 pounds of flour over about two weeks time. It really is a big waste of time and money. I'm sure I will go back to making a sourdough starter in the winter when the weather cools, and I will try out her bread recipes, but I won't be using her sourdough starter recipe again. I don't believe that the gold-rushers in the Sierra Foothills of Calif., in SF, or the Klondike wasted as much flour on their sourdough starter as Nancy wants one to use/ waste. But then, that is SOCAL (Southern Calif. for those unacquainted with the Golden State).

Since I love La Brea breads, I was excited to get this book. I followed her directions for making the starter but once I got to the "building the starter" stage, I started each feeding with only 2 cups of starter to lessen waste. It seemed to work just fine for me. I also don't feed it 3x a day as recommended. I feed it once the night before beginning the dough then refrigerate the remainder. I have been waiting 3 days before feeding again (a la Reinhart's method) and it seems to be keeping very strong after 5 months.I make the Country White (1/2 recipe) regularly, forming into 1 lb boules perfect for 2 people. The Chapeau Rolls made as plain round rolls are lovely. The whole grain took several tries to get it light enough but the New York Rye came out perfect the first time and had the best texture of any rye I've tried. The sourdough waffles are crisp outside an tender inside with very good flavor, although they didn't brown well.So the bottom line is to use her book with common sense and make the starter and recipes work for you. Personally, I think feeding the starter 3x a day is too much for my schedule and frankly is a waste of flour. But the recipes I have tried are good and if they don't work for you, try experimenting.

One of the best bread cookbooks out there, I think. I am a cook, baker, and chef. I used to bake professionally.I love this cookbook. Years ago, I made my start from organic red grapes (per the recipe in this book). It makes such an awesomeloaf of sourdough bread. I have yet to find any bread out there that compares with this recipe. The bread has a fantastic crust with verynice interior and a sourdough flavor (but not overwhelmingly so). What I love most about the bread is it does not bloat you up (becausethere is no yeast, only starter for the basic recipe. Also, the bread stays good for a week and does not get "rock hard" like somany rustic sourdough breads. There are also recipes for focaccia, rustic flat bread, rosemary bread, etc. There is one of the bestrecipes for sourdough pancakes as well as waffles. There are also recipes for whole wheat and rye breads. They are also good, but Iprefer the sourdough.

Great book on making sourdough. Yes, the recipes are not simple There's a lot of ins and outs, tips and tricks, and troubleshooting. I was thinking that I should have started this when I retired, but the results are great and I love that Nancy has this down to a science. My husband loves sourdough, and loves the bread that I've been making. We can't buy any bread in our town that is this good, so it's worth the extra effort. I would highly recommend it.

Nancy Silverton is the embodiment of passion. Not since reading Mastering the Art of French Cooking have I come across a cookbook and chef/baker/savant able to impart knowledge so completely. Silverton literally tells you all of the techniques, discoveries and secrets she's found through countless hours of trial and error, and successfully built her restaurants and bakeries on.If you're a beginner or a seasoned baker, chances are you will find something beneficial from reading/using this book. Even if it's just Silverton's infectious passion.

Amazing book ONLY IF you'd like to bake sourdough breads. If not, this is not the book for you. Otherwise, amazing detail and insight into baking.

I absolutely love this book. I had no experience in bread-making when I bought it, but I was dedicated to learning how to make awesome sourdough. She writes beautifully and really gives you a feel for what the dough should look/feel like at every stage. The basic recipe is many, many pages of prose. Don't let that intimidate you: she describes each step so in-depth that it'll help you make your way toward being an independent baker. Also, each recipe is for at least two loaves so working your way through this book is a great way to make friends!As a picky aside: I never took her advice for how to make a starter. I think there's a lot of superstition in her method that results in wayyy too much work for a home baker. I used the Root Simple method: equal parts flour and water in a jar, pour out and replace half each day. Works like a charm and you don't have to take your starter to work like Ms. Silverton suggests.

Great book and great recipes. If you are new to sourdough, don't be intimidated. It takes patience to get your natural yeast started, but once you are baking you will be overjoyed! This book has Nancy's sourdough recipes and yeast recipes as well.
